Post Malone covered Alice in Chains song "Them Bones" live on The Howard Stern Show so I'm going to take a look and see how he fairs. He seems to be a fan of rock and grunge, should he give up that pop stuff and focus on rock n roll? I certainly would like it if he did.

Justin, you really should try and get into the original and the oeuvre that is Alice in Chains.
You are very funny and entertaining. I love the band The Cult... esp. the album Electric.
Wish Alice In Chains were opening
Justin Please Please Please can you do a show on this dudes song, yes he is serial and a very sick bass player, love your work! cheers xxx th-cam.com/video/EwPUtEMms4E/w-d-xo.html
Hi Justin,
Just wondering if you ever saw or heard of a band called Dr funk on YT?
I just saw a video of them for the first time, and I'm interested in what you think.
It's a superb bassist and drummer act.
Also, I really enjoyed Post's rendition of this aic cover
And aic is one of my all time favorite bands.
Edit* sorry it's called Dr funk and the good times?
The song I just heard is called Roadrunner
he's an artist. he should do whatever the hell makes him happy. his music in general is pretty good. covers or originals. and he is great live.
Post is so humble. I think he covers these bands out of respect and pay homage .
Huh? lol! Its blasphemy.
@@BongDonky how so? In your POV Alice and Chains are sacred or God like? Hmm ok to each their own I guess. I really like them and can't think of my bands or singers that shouldn't be covered. Or is a Post thing? Maybe this was a joke I didn't get.
Its a Post Malone issue. Complete garbage in my opinion. Cheers!@@wwgbert

I wouldn't be watching if you were menacing...your non menacingness is part of the charm of this channel. I am extremely curious to know whose spawn the foghorn gob was though.
Justin, your perspective is so interesting! Taking Posty from a point of view of him being new to you and analysing him a good few years into his career, so cool! He started with a somewhat unique style of rap blended with pop and folk. He knows where his money is, but his success allows him to try out what he likes: grunge, country, folk, rock, and whatever else. He'd also probably give you a hug if you met him.
His name is Austin! He also has an amazing Bob Dylan under his youtube channel before he became famous: Austin Post. Definitely worth a listen. I go back to it all of the time.
He's a big genuine fan of metal and grunge and can play it rather well. Btw, the guitar is tuned exactly how Jerry Cantrell tunes for said song Drop D tuning down half a step
Rock songs doesn't sell no more. That's why he sticks to pop rap stuff more.
😂
Wolf VH is selling out stadiums in one day! Rock is nowhere near dead. AIC sold out the two closest venues before I could get tickets.
Pretty sure tools album beat Taylor swift for #1 album and they are in their 50’s and took a decade break
His name is Austin Post. He's the nicest person, too. You'd love him.
@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain you need to check out the duet he did with Agnus stone - big jet plane. Post does the female part of the song and his vocals are amazing
Post has quite a bit of pitch correction here but his vibrato technique is all him!
Amazing voice. He had ozzy sing on one of his song. I'm pretty sure he played a show with slash and a few others covering warpigs. Please check out Alice in chains. Your missing out if not
Stop click baiting us into thinking you're going to slag someone off. You know we're drama junkies.
I would love to see you react to more Alice in Chains! My first exposure to them was the song "Would?", but you can't really go wrong with most of their songs! 🔥
Justin how could you not know Alice n Chains
Have you seen him in interviews? He seems like the most polite & easygoing guy. Nothing scary about him at all
Funny that you say if you said you didn’t like him he’d beat you up but Post is honestly the last person to do that. He’s so sweet and genuine if you said you didn’t like him he’d probably just apologize
488,000❤❤❤…nearly there 😂
dont worry he is a sweet guy, even a pretty big nerd, just look up his song "why don't you love me", that he did as some kinda school project.
hate fkn autotune live, specially when you can hear it so clearly
That awesome choir just got out what's hidden inside of this song's harmonies (like in a lot of AiC's) - GOSPEL! I like the version - pays due respect to the original adding a nice personal flair. What a good cover should be.
"I'm scared of him" made me laugh. He's probably the most likeable, humble celebrity that has ever existed. Mr Reeves aside.
Never heard him do anything before this... I definitely never want to hear him rap.
He's not a rapper
Think that if you are going to sing out of tune then sharp is usually better than flat. For better or worse, Robert Plant is sometimes a pitchy singer. No mentioned in the video, but Post is Austin's surname and Malone is from a random name generator. Post has polyps on his vocal chords and is a heavy smoker, which might explain the frequent use of autotune on recordings. No idea why Post wears a thick beard, maybe it is simply to keep his face warm in cold weather.
Yeah, you probably already know by now but he was actually in a rock/Metal band before all the fame and what not. It’s weird to say that I don’t even listen to a lot of his music really but he’s honestly probably my favorite modern musician just for all the stuff that he does. Don’t get me wrong, I like a few of his songs, but I just don’t listen to a lot of his music or for that matter a lot of current music. But he’s still one of my favorite current musicians just due to his musicality and musicianship. He’s a fan of music like I am.
You should watch AIC Them Bone performance on Jools Holland 1993
lol, Liked "globleuls of stuff that's resinating in there" that was great...good video brother
If you want to hear a great version of this song, then check out Fishbone’s rendition for the AIC tribute. For me, this version doesn’t do anything for me, not dissing PM, just not my thing.
Honestly I appreciate it when Rap/pop artists expose their audience to other music. Keep at it I say.
Post can do anything. I think he could release a song or album of any genre and it would absolute slap.
Also, funny that you say you’re scared of him - he’s a massive softy and is so beautiful towards his fans, he seems genuinely untouched by fame. So humble.
Nope, Layne’s voice was unique and this is a shallow version. Props for attempting it though. Great video👍🏻
The band hired William DuVall because they said he sounded exactly like Layne.
Not at all shallow.
Layne's voice being unique doesn't mean that this isn't a great fckn cover, shallow is your reasoning.
I love Layne Staley's voice, AIC and Mad Season were amazing, but Post is a real fan, genuinely loves the song and it shows.
The heavy use of pitch correction helps with the soullessness
If this is shallow then no attempt at an AIC cover won't be shallow. Probably too stuck on how unique Layne's vocals are without realising the raw amazing talent and emotion this cover has.
Yes. He's mediocre at everything.
Never been a fan of Post, rap just ain’t my thing… always had mad respect for his attitude and vibe. Seems like a real, genuine homie. Would love to buy him a beer and bullshit someday.
He found a lane that earns a lot of money. He tryed a rock career but couldn’t find his feet. Hip hop earned him fame and money so he is loyal to that but in his heart there is rock.
Never heard of Justin Hawkins but sure love me some Alice.
I'm a huge rock\metal fan, a musician, and a fan of Alice in Chains. Post Malone, is a strange one for me. I do believe he is very genuine and heartfelt about his music. He's carefully chosen covers that are significant to a particular generation, kind of the b-sides of the singles approach to the choices. I do think he tends to pull them off well in most cases. To me, I think the boys of AIC would appreciate this rendition as much as anyone else. However, there are A LOT of artists out there that can't pull it off, or just ruin covers completely. So it's refreshing in my opinion to see someone like Post show case the width of his talent.
Im not sure who it is . But I love New Age music and Irish music . Alice n chains is awesome I forgot how much I love them .the cult is awesome too . Congrats on your show you have such a lovely personality.
I used to not like Post until I heard him cover Nothing Else Matters and I was like “ohhh damn!!!”
Maybe on a slight tangent, but on the Mopop awards that Alice In Chains was awarded a couple of years ago, Fishbone did a great cover of this song as well...
Post is awesome
Pretty sure there’s some sort of live-auto tune on his voice but who cares
Still a cool rendition by any stretch
Right on Post Malone super sick
Perhaps do a video of the actual Them Bones song - seeing as AIC are unfamiliar?
LOVE POST MALONES VOICE
Justin you Legend, Layne Staley’s voice will microwave your cockles. Please listen to him 🙏
Whatever they wanna do. Saw it perfomed in 93 and only death can take that from me.
Please, please, please Justin do a review of the new Crossbone Skully track - Im Unbreakable. Written and performed by the amazing Tommy Henriksen, with a host of insane talent involved and produced by the incredible Mutt Lange...it needs to be heard!!!
Post Malone is the sweetest guy in the industry. A real standout gentleman
Not a fan of Post's hip hop stuff but I really admire how versatile he is. He also seems like the nicest guy.
Yeah, in terms of his “hip-hop”, he’s total ass, but this was pretty good. With so many great underground hip-hop artists, it makes me sad what mainstream hip-hop is, or has become.
Was about to comment the same pretty much! Think I only dig one of his tunes, but he just seems like a nice guy
Well i saw an interview in which he Said the loved rock and roll since he was a child, but it wasn’t popular so he went the rap route.
As a singer myself, I don’t think there’s a higher rock mountain than Layne for the 90’s on. His power and projection was just completely unmatched, and he had gobs of real breakup and strain on tap, without it ever sounding like he was hurting his voice. Mark Lanegan from the screaming trees was Layne’s best friend and toured together quite a bit, and said that you could FEEL layne’s voice shaking your chest even sidestage, and even pulled from the mic he was louder than Jerry’s backline. And as a guitarist, there’s no better tone than what Jerry and Dave Jerden got out of that bogner modded 4010. It’s just completely evil, Sabbath levels of heaviness.
Jeff Buckley easily..
You said it brother!
I mean Layne btw.
Chris Cornell. Layne was amazing but Chris was a dude who could easily win one of these stupid modern karaoke shows. Both very unique voices though.
Buckley, Cornell, Vedder
2:02 "The choirs going to join you on this?"
"I would love that, yeah. I mean, i am paying them and we had a rehearsal." 😂
Lmfao and the anonymous member of the choir answers! 😂
You don’t know anything about Alice In Chains??? **faints**
I think he must have just forgotten
Ah man Justin, you need some Jerry Cantrell in your life. I think you'd love his guitar playing, on this song especially. No one sounds like Layne so can't really rate the performance against that, and if this sort of things helps to continue to promote, or highlight Alice in Chains' music, more power to everyone involved. Can't say I'm a fan of the cover but definitely don't hate it. Would love you see some AiC coverage on this channel though 🦴☠⛓
Jerry’s solo albums have some of my favorite songs. “Siren Song” off the Brighten album is beautiful, but I also love “Solitude,” “Voices,” “Angel Eyes,” “Never Fade,” “Your Decision,” “ Stone,” “The One You Know” and almost every song he’s written. I listen to an AIC/JC playlist every night. They’ve been my favorite band since Facelift dropped, and it’s not even their best album. Justin would love the vocal harmonies.
Edit to add: Wolf covered “Them Bones” live last year. Then Jerry played it live on his solo tour, and AIC played it that summer (2022).
Alice in chains unplugged is one of the greatest live shows in the history of live music.
Post isn't afraid to leave his lane. Personally I really like that. Some musicians (or maybe their management?) are afraid that they will alienate their fan base. Post is sharing songs that he loves with his audience. It might be the first time that his audience has heard that kind of music. That's a win IMO.
Isn't afraid to leave his Layne*
Its atrocious.
@@MickyAvStickyHandsbeat me to it 😂
It only alienates your most insufferable fans. You know, the ones you WANT to lose. Post venturing outside hip hop has just exposed him to a new audience that might dig his other stuff, too. And they'll be cool with it when he continues to experiment.
Sure malone went the pop rap route as a solo artists but deep down hes a metal rock guy, especially since he used to be in a metalcore band so no i dont think hes out of his layne, i like aic and he sounded great, he put his style into it while being on the border of being close to sounding like the original
Alice In Chains are probably my favourite band of all time. You'd adore their vocal harmonies. Take a listen/react to either "Down in a hole", "would", "rooster", "Rotten apple". Sod it. Just binge in them.
I listen to them every day/night. They’re also my favourite band ever. I recommend “The One You Know” for the harmonies in the bridge, and everything else, because their songs are just that good. “Devil By My Side” is fun for driving. (I love Jerry’s solo albums, too.) “Never Fade” is excellent. “Voices,” “Stone,” “Breath on a Window”… every song rocks.
Nutshell is also a very beautiful-moving song❤
Big Genious band, i love AIC too

It`s easy answer why he does what he does - money is in pop.
Also, if you have not listened to Alice in chains you are missing out a lot.
I would dig this if he wasn’t using autotune, did nobody else not notice immediately after the first note change?
And then Justin, dude, you’re telling me you could t hear it either as you praise his vocal talent?
Still props for playing an AIC song live, but I can’t really enjoy post’s performance because he doesn’t actually let you hear his real voice free of auto tune. It’s a crutch, I get it, I’ve used it on some recordings too but I’m tired of people not putting their true voice out there.
The choir is a different story, they’re clearly smazing
Simply put... If you can't bring it -- DON'T! :0/
I bet Justin has decided that going on about auto tune is probably annoying. I personally would rather he mentioned it more because it was hard enough to get work with a real voice BEFORE these posers decided to be ok with essentially falsifying most of their live (and all of their studio) performances.
Honestly, I became a fan of his for his character more than his music. I couldn’t name one original song of his, but he’s one of the most genuine, humble, kind people with fame that you can find out there.
It's weird because I'm mostly a hard rock and metal fan but I love Post Malone music. Even the pop songs I mostly like buy he has some really dark ballads that are so good. The song Reputation is definitely my favorite of his.

This comment needs to be pinned. I was shocked Justin doesn’t know about the magical harmonies and dissonance that Layne and Jerry brought to the table. Layne is one of the most underrated voices and it took a fucking choir just to make it sound like an AIC harmony like it is on the album. Insane. Justin, please listen to AIC and watch Layne live before he let heroine take hold.
I think Post Malone just does the music he likes, regardless of what 'genre' people place him in. And does it well.
It might just be me, but that cover had a bit of a 'bluegrass' feel mixed into it, really cool.

Alice In Chains is a real treasure along with the rest of the Seattle scene from that time. Grunge gave the world some of the greatest and most talented bands ever.
Layne, what a GOAT! Jerry and Layne to me were the Lennon and McCartney of the 90’s. You NEED some Layne era Alice in Chains and also Mad Season in your life! I can’t see how you wouldn’t be blown away by their work!!!
iv thought this exact thing before. they're song writing and harmony's with each other, the lennon/mccartney of the 90s.
Layne was one of the greatest rock singers ever. Very underrated. His Grisel and scream where second to none. Also his vocal ability and harmonies with Gerry are just out of this world.
I just do t think this version cuts it. Nice try and he obviously loves these bands. Just not for me.
yes its really bad this cover and hes using auto tune. i do like the idea giving the whole vikings background singers type thing but this cover doesn't cut it at all. he was great covering nirvana. when he tries to mimic layne or eddie it his vibrato is way too much like a goat rather than a true vibrato.

Unlike people from our generation (I’m a bit older than you) kids these days don’t have hang ups about genre. They grow listening and appreciating all different types of music and isn’t that a good thing? This either/or attitude doesn’t seem to exist, at least not to the extent it did when I was a kid.
Post Malone has always been a great artist and never lets anyone box him into a genre. Too many people just think he’s pop or rap because that’s what made him famous.
I've never really been that into Post Malone, but this was absolutely excellent. Immediately went to listen to the full version 🤘🏽
No how could we be scared of you , you have those doe like kind eyes ❤
His rap keeps his bank account filled.
His Rock and Pop are what keeps him real.
I don't think anyone makes Pop music to be real. You make Pop music to fill bank accounts and get radio play.
I draw for peoples' face tattoos at least a few times a year, and they are always the nicest people, so... no, that in particular would not make me scared of you, but other things might 😅
On the other hand... people coming into tattoo studios are usually very nice, overall, as it's in their best interests to be so... I wouldn't really know how scary they are outside of one, do I? 🤔
Nothing can ever compete with original AIC. Occasionally there are great covers with an original twist. I can think of two, this and the City and Colour version of Rain when I die.
City and Colour’s cover is absolutely amazing!
I'm still riding high on yesterday's Southern River Band, so I feel less generous tonight. ... I really, really like the original Them Bones, and I still prefer that one after this. Post Malone is cool, though.

Sorry Justin.... this is autotuned sh@t cause he can't sing. While the amount of the effect is more subtle than what people would most likely catch, it is there and even artifacting if you are paying attention.
One of your fellow countrymen has a youtube channel, Wing Of Pegasus, where he talks about the use of autotune/pitch correction in music, and even shows it on pitch monitoring software. Once you hear it, especially after he shows its presence, you won't miss it. This has become the unfortunate trend in music to make up for the lack of musicianship and/or the perfection of performance, at the expense of complete human expression.
Even more scary than that, record companies/producers/execs are going back and applying pitch correction to songs and albums from before pitch correction was a staple in the industry (think all those popular albums in the 60s, 70s and 80s), for whatever reason. The only plausible explanation I would give to them is that they are trying to present 'musical perfection, but are actually making it musically unacceptable. Good musicians understand their imperfections and how to incorporate them into their performances to create musical expression. Think of all the 'techniques' that guitarist use today, which aren't even actual notes or were proper ways to play guitar, until people like (Hendrix, Van Halen, or a bunch of others before and after) came along and found ways to make those 'techniques' musically expressive.
I myself am a guitar player and can't imagine all that would be lost if someone was able to take an autotune or pitch correction device to all those epic guitar songs and turn those techniques into some sort of straight playing for the sake of being proper at the lost of expression and creativity.
I think a major reason why The Darkness was accepted for what you were doing when you came out was because you are real musicians, playing real effing rock n roll, with real bad ass singing, and doing it well. This means you also have learned to use any 'imperfections' in your playing or voice, to augment your expression. That is a skill in and of itself, and we should celebrate it for the sake of creativity and the art.
It is one thing if an artist is using something like pitch correction or autotune as an effect, or to provide some type of expression on a particular part of a song, but when they have to use it as a crutch for lack of ability, them it should be called out and ostricized. This practice needs to be eliminate or future generations will not know what true artistic talent is, let alone care for it. At that point, which I am afraid we have almost reached, musical creativity will simply become mediocre, and that is what people will accept. Can you imagine if autotune and pitch correction were applied to the punk bands of the early 80s? Well, you may not have to for very long, cause as I said, there are people trying to do just that.
If you have any original albums prior to the 2000s, hold on to them, cause they record companies are trying to re-release these albums as 'remastered' versions and the originals will be lost.
Now, with all that I have said, it is possible that this effect is being used without Post Malone's knowledge by the producers and sound engineers of the Howard Stern show, possibly even as directed by the execs who have say in Post Malone's artistic control and/or performance.... although would find it hard to believe he would be completely unaware that it is going on and not have a say in it.
Like I said, check out Wing Of Pegasus's YT channel and all the vids that he has put out on this... especially 'live' performances. You'd be surprised on the artist that have had their 'live' performance vocals autotuned... like Eric Clapton or Randy Misner.
WOP demonstrates it very clearly and when you can also see it, you won't miss it when hearing it.
What if Oliver Anthony, who lives just over an hour drive from me, and his song 'Rich Men North Of Richmond' was autotuned?
Don't think it would have gone over as much as it did.
Cheers from across the pond,
Tim
