The Pax Britannica trilogy is one of my favourite reads - Morris's authentic voice, and her unabashed romanticism for Britain's lost imperial adventures, comes shining through in a retelling of history that is at once educational, raffishly critical, shot through with melancholy, and often delightfully witty. These days, with history (particularly colonial history) under such constant attack, Pax Britannica is a must-read, and for me a constant presence on my bookshelf.
I read her trilogy of the British Empire. Her prose made me feel as if I were an eyewitness, living in the moment, no matter the year being discussed, from Jamaica to Egypt to India to Burma, from the coronation of Queen Victoria to the Suez Crisis. That is no small feat when writing history.
Wonderful exposé! Thank you

I remember her from a Lincoln documentary on the history channel. She was awesome. Rest In Peace
I knew I had seen her somewhere before, that was it! Thank you.
@@johnfd0210 I’m just glad someone else saw it, it’s my favorite Lincoln documentary
Yes, he was.
Jan is fascinating that is all I see or read when I delve into her life!
One of the most important and significant and wonderful humans to walk the earth.
Btwn her accent & point of view , enjoyed listening to her .
Rest in paradise jan Morris ❤️❤️❤️
This piece and the interviewer seemed quite progressive on the transitioning matter. It wasn't treated like a spectacle.
RIP Jan Morris
His daughter told the real story after he died. He was cold, demanding and took a toll on the family.
@@chukotka6224 His prose. He also lied to get to the first climbers to peak Everest. Oh, that was "when he was a man," so those lies don't matter.

She is a wonderful writer and fabulous person. So true to herself.
He was?
Ouch.
November 20: She passed away on Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Well, that was fitting, at least....sigh....what a mess he made of his life. His former brilliant and deserved reputation in tatters all around him.
