Many Pentaholics believe this was the group's "goodbye" to Avi. It came out before they brought in Matt. The part that always gets me is Scott looking into the camera, saying he just came here to say goodbye. Kevin's cello filled in for the missing bass. Ingenious on PTX's part to bring in the cello to fill in for Avi.

I had only heard the PTX version before this so I’m really glad you did this triple comparison. But, of course, PTX still was my favorite one. I love how PTX is so good that when they finished all you can do is laugh with happiness over the beauty of it! I was laughing with ya, but with a broken heart since I could hear Avi’s tone thru Kevin’s cello. Loved this, thx!

At the time they put this out, I thought there was some shadowing of the fact that they were still grieving Ari's absence, and they were (symbolically) dancing "on my own." But when Pentatonix does a song, they always make it better than the original, or than anyone else has ever done it. The addition of the cello, in place of Avi's voice, was brilliant.

You're the FIRST person that that saw the skill in this arrangement. The Trio has grown so much, and it was THEIR dream, and they asked Kevin and Avi to fill the sound out. But I have been a trio fan and they sound remarkable! And Super K. O., the master of his crafts that he is, carried his percussion and the bass. God love them! ❤️

I feel like Robyn's version is her saying she'll be ok, Calum Scott's version is him saying he's destroyed, and Pentatonix's version is saying that they'll miss Avi, but they have to keep going. So, they're all great, depending on your mood.

I recall reading somewhere that Kevin tuned his cello to match Avi's tone. (I think that was in Avi's Sage and Stone) but.. it is right in that range he would have been in. Rather emotion fiulled when you think about them with out him and doing that dancing on my own. But like everything thing they do, I like their verstions better LOL

    • @UserHorologium
      @UserHorologium 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

The special tuning was used in "Fields and Pier", from the Sage and Stone EP. In the video, when the two Avis are sitting on the rocks next to the river, only one of the voices is Avi; the other is Kevin's cello. It's possibly my favorite moment on the entire EP, as it is breathtaking.

Great reaction Jerod 😊 Never heard the original it's good, Callum's version is beautifully longing, wanting someone who doesn't know you exist, but PTX is special for me because it's a bittersweet goodbye to Avi it makes you cry but also relive all the love & joy you felt when they all were together going after their dreams you know💔😊💖😢

Such a great reaction, Jerod! I get chills, and almost feel like crying with the poignant version Pentatonix did of this song. How do they always seem to take a song and make it even better? Kevin’s cello was perfect here.

Callum Scott really doesnt have any own version. Robyn made this song in 2 versions. This more clubby one but also a slower version wich Callum just copied straight of. Only thing he did was to hold on a bit longer to some notes. Rest is Robyn's slow version th-cam.com/video/kY6PU7k8iXo/w-d-xo.html

Threefer! Wonderful! This was the perfect song for this triple format, and you aced it, Jarod. I have to say it, though--what do you mean (6:14) when you say that you've seen Calum Scott sing this "but only on Britain's Got Talent"? Uh, Jarod, you saw him live, in Dallas, on Wednesday 26 July 2018. (Or were you off getting a cold drink during this song on that 100+ degree evening?) Anyway, setting that aside: props to Robyn. This is a terrific song. So much emotion, and it lends itself perfectly to all the different interpretations. What I saw in Robyn's powerful performance was a lot of anger and hurt. I like your words for Calum's performance--"tender" and "desperate." PTX's version was solemn--as if they'd moved past the denial and rage stages and are more in the bargaining ("I'm giving it my all") and depression stages, working toward acceptance. They concentrated more on the beauty of the melody and added harmonies that are out of the reach of solo singers. Each of the performers brought out different depths of the song. I love it. All three versions are great. (For Pentaholics, though--most of us can't help seeing this as mourning for Avi, not yet moving on to Matt, so "I just came to say goodbye" hits particularly hard in their version. And the aching beauty of Kevin's solo...OK, I'm done.)

It was the last song he sang, I think. I'm pretty sure. It's his signature song, so it makes sense that he left it for the end. And you may literally have been off doing something to get ready for the main event! Lots of us were buying food, water, merch, etc., because obviously we didn't want to miss a moment of PTX.

And thanks for the triple comparison. Our bus was delayed getting to the Pentatonix concert in June, so I missed Callum's part, couldn't avoid the next act, a nice enough garage band, but was happily in my seat when the lights went dark and the PTX concert extravaganza started. This was at Shoreline in the SF Bay Area, and it was great. So thanks for the triple comparison!

Robyn is very DISCO. Calum Scott turns it into a ballad with his unique tone making it an emotional experience. Jerod, you were spot on in saying they were inbetween the 2 in that they kept some of the very rythmic version of Bobyn and combining the emotion into it.

There is another cover of this song that I love from the TV Show "Smash". It also has the more subdued feel like Callum & PTX. The only time I've heard this upbeat/dance version is Robin. Like many others have said already, this was a hard video to watch when it was released but I think a fitting way to ease us Pentaholics into life w/o Avi...but the way kevin plays that cello... and his face...OYE! I had heard all three versions of this song, but under very different circumstances, which affected my reactions to them.
Robyn's version was on the music feed where I worked a few years ago, and so hearing it every 45 minutes or so got old quickly. I couldn't make out the words clearly, and I thought she was singing about dancing "on the flow" or "on the floor". (Yes, the sound system at work is old and not very clear, especially when dealing with music and accents.)
I heard the PTX cover when it was released, and I (first) said some naughty words to myself when I heard the lyrics clearly (Scott's diction is much better than Robyn's, and the spare arrangement helps immensely). I first head Calum Scott's version (or a tiny snippet of it) in a reaction to the PTX cover by another reactor, who was very familiar with his cover, and liked the way Calum elongated the words at the beginning of the song. After hearing the little snippet, I sought out Callum's cover, and decided I liked it.(I think he killed it at both of the performances where I saw him on the tour, and it made a nice finale to his set.
(For those who are not aware. Calum Scott was the first opening performance for Pentatonix on their 2018 tour. The second group for most of the shows was Echosmith, who have a triple-platinum single, "Cool Kids".)

@@JerodM Nope, the definition of "version" is "A particular form of something differing in certain respects from an earlier form or other forms of the same type of thing." Therefore, Robyn has the original and any other thing (even her slower version of the original) is a version.

You could actually turn this into a fiver if you wanted. There were two more covers, and I believe that they both came between Robyn and Calum - one by the Kings of Leon and what I believe was a cover of the KOL version by Jeffrey Austin on the Voice in 2015. I'm kind of convinced that each was a cover of the prior version. First, Robyn, of course, then KOL covering Robyn, then Jeffrey covering KOL, Calum covering Jeffrey and PTX covering Calum. This is all conjecture, of course.

Something that always occurs to me that I don't know if it occurred to Pentatonix at all is that they were so shattered looking in the video a message from Avi. He stated he needed to keep a slower pace when he left at a really crucial point in their career that they'd all five work so hard 4 and sacrificed so much to get to. all of them were missing family and friends. But while they're who left after that video just sitting there broken hearted and wondering what their future holds now after losing such an important part of who they are, a quartet now because their friend needed a break, they get to watch him immediately started in with his new band. And there wasn't even time to take a breath between when he quit and when he started with his new band. They were pretty much left in the lurch and I was so upset to hear all the criticism people were throwing up the remaining members of Pentatonix , and insulting them about how they sounded without Avi . Cuz it wasn't their choice to be without Avi . And their record sales actually took a dip for the first time . The music is just as good and Pentaholic's have all the blame in that. The reason being a whole bunch of Pentaholics jumped ship and went to fully support Avi's music with his new band. But refused to support Pentatonix. It wasn't balanced. PTX were criticized for how they sounded without Avi, and he was praised and got all the fan support. We could have been there for both Avi AND the remaining members of Pentatonix. I felt like we let them down when they needed us the most. I fell in love with Matt instantly when I watched the fan videos of The Holiday Tour! No he's not Avi, but he's Matt and he breathed new life into the group that I have not seen since The Sing-Off really! And now look at them! This last tour was just really another level and they pulled it off night after night after night! They were like pop stars and I am so happy for them! This song I really felt was there goodbye before they moved on and brought in a new bassist. And they're hurting. it breaks my heart the way they deliver this. three of them on the couch yet Kevin and Avi aren't sitting in front of them on the floor, side by side. Kevin is sitting apart, alone, his cello in place of his friend. they're broken. And the passion cannot be denied in their delivery of this song. I knew immediately it was a message and it is a goodbye to Avi. And they are hurting.
I'd like it if their current work was being looked at by reactors as well as the older classic work done with Avi. I think it's important to see what they're doing now as well as all of the amazing things the five of them accomplished together over all those years! I love every single member of that group including Avi but I won't pick one over the other. this song Still breaks my heart and it always will

Not sure which of those two came first.

The covers are great, no question about it. However, Robyn wrote the original and wanted to convey a message. Some suffer in silence and try to act like everything is ok, regardless.
A very Swedish thing to do and a very Swedish way of showing one’s emotions by suffering in silence, hoping that someone can pick up the small hint of someone in need of a friend or a kind word.
Her whole song and video shows very strong emotions by a very Swedish custom. Keep up a brave front, at any cost. Thiis why I love Robyn’s original the most and maybe you have to be Swedish and abide to our social rules to get Robyn’s point.

It whenever I listen to their version of the song it sounds like Kevin is trying to get the chello to match the tone of Avi's voice and to play the missing piece. I do believe this is their 'farewell' to Avi, as you can tell by their expressions/tones and how heart felt it was, especially i think it was not long after his announcement.

Callum's is the best cause his singing to the guy not the girl. Here I am right over here why can't you see me, but the guy only see the girl. That why Callum sings with such emotion.. So beautiful. He's come out now.

Robyn and the original version will always be the best by far. And just to make it clear. Callum Scott did not make any own version of this song so it is so wrong to call it his version. He didnt change anything else than holding out a few notes longer. Robyn also has done this song in a slower version wich is the one Callum copied. At his audition he forgot to mention that he had chosen her slower version and instead made it sound as if he had slowed it down and therfor wrongly got credit for it. Here is her slower version that Callum copied th-cam.com/video/kY6PU7k8iXo/w-d-xo.html I think it is important to give credit to the right person.

Like in so many other covers Pentatonics are so centers around the techniques and perfectionism that they come out completely void of feeling and meaning. Robyn did a song about dancing alone in a dance beat. There is a reason Rolling Stone chose it as the best and most influential pop song of the 2010ns decade.

Pentatonix* seemed to do well enough on the emotion for this. I think your perspective is a rare one in that very few music experts would agree with you if any. The context of this performance from Pentatonix matters to understand where the emotions were focused.

Robyn who made the original is awesome, Pentatonix is doing a great cover, Calums cover is a bit too whining. So a little like Abba´s songs: many covers, some are great some are not but in the end nothing beat the original so Robyn for the win

Wow! Calum Scott's version is really intimate and exciting. A Very good version and a great singer. I never heard him before. Thank you. P. S...the original version is most "aggressive" in my opinion, sorry to Robyn but i don't like it so much...and i prefer always the ptx's version. This is the first song that they registered without Avi and someone says it's dedicated to him (in a sense). As always i hope you understend my strange english 🤣🤣🤣

They were so different...with Robyn's, obviously it was the original and more dance type music, and with hers, I could actually see what she was feeling in the moment at the club. With Calum Scott's I felt his pain more than anything and with Pentatonix, you'll never beat them musically...so I feel like they were all so different but all invoked emotion.

Canal Sujismundos completely different styles, but adequate for the artist or artists performing it. A comparison video isn’t to say one is better or worse, it’s to show how different people view, interpret, and perform a specific work of art. In this case, the original serves as a the launching board for the others to work with.

  • @caroleceres
    @caroleceres 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’m hearing Robin’s Original for the first time. To me the song sounds aggressive and the video looks very disjointed from the lyrics! So I’m not a fan of her rendition.
Calum Scott’s version is slow and haunting, but equally doesn’t draw me. “It’s ok”.
I’m a Pentaholic, aware of the timing and history behind this release. So, of course, in my biased opinion, their version is perfect! Harmonies, Expressions & Emotions all on point!
Thank you for putting these side by side for us to see the amazing transition from original to best cover! 🤗

Robyn doesn't have a "version". It's her song.Callum doesn't have a version either. He didn't slow the song down.Instead of copying the studio release,he copied Robyn's performance from the Rimmel Room, where she slowed it down. She did both first.Pentatonix is just a Pitch Perfect movie approach. They're entertaining, but they're just ripping off a movie

    • @JerodM

When comparing renditions of something the word “version” is correct. Hers is the original version. The other two are cover versions. That’s all I intended to convey.

You compare Robyn's upbeat version with Calum's version of her slow version... Not really fair tbh. Personally, I think both her upbeat and slow is way better than Calum's version of her slow version.
