Deleting Cleaned Contacts in Mailchimp

- Are "cleaned" contacts driving you crazy? Cleaned contacts are email addresses that Mailchimp has labeled as undeliverable. They have hard bounced because they either the email address does not exist or there is a spam filter that has totally blocked email from ever getting into the inbox. Once a contact is labeled as "cleaned" it is no longer counted in your contacts, you can not email them, and you will not be paying for them. There is no harm in keeping "cleaned" contacts in your account, but if you want them gone, here are the instructions.
Mailchimp has updated its interface in some accounts. These are the new instructions: Create a segment for Subscription Status = Cleaned contacts - Press the 3 dots - Delete Contacts - "I want to clean up my archive" - Continue to archive - "Permanently delete instead"

Nice info, thanks
Firstly, thank you for the video tutorial.
One question: If your customer fixes their email account, preventing emails from "bouncing," could you ever re-add them if their email was "cleaned"?
Mailchimp goes by email address, so a new email address will be added as a separate contact. If you want to edit their email, here are the instructions: How to FIX CLEANED Contacts in Mailchimp

@@SpringAheadMediaSolutions Thanks :)
Thanks for this. Whats the benefit from deleting them to just archiving them?
You can't archive cleaned contacts. The options are to leave them or delete them.
thank you so much! clear and effective
Glad it helped!

Super Helpful!
so any reason not to delete cleaned contacts? MC says to keep them because it helps prevent bounces but I don't understand how that would help. Thanks!
It’s good to have a record of cleaned contacts so you don’t import them into another list and email them again. You can export before you delete. There’s also no harm in leaving them in your audience. It can just be annoying.
Cannot add them back into your audience, even if you had the same email in a newly freshly imported CSV, or is it just purged from the archived list? I want to regularly refresh my audience from a validated opt-in list, based on their paid membership in an organization. I always hear "cannot be added to audience again" and I'm still not sure how absolute is that?
They can not be added back in at all, ever, in any way. If you want them to be able to be re-imported or re-subscribed, archive them.
You're the best!
I know right. 😉 Glad I could help.
subcribed!
I have two contacts that are set as Cleaned, but I know they are valid. How do I get them back into my list?
You can re-subscribe them using an external signup form. You can find the URL for one under the Form Builder here: us21.admin.mailchimp.com/audience/forms/dashboard/
Is there a way to edit their email address if misspelled?
2 options - 1. Just create a new contact with the correct email address and abandon the bad one. 2. Resubscribe the bad email address through an external signup form, then once it’s listed as Subscribed you can edit it.
If a contact attains a NEW email address can they be inported again with new email if their name has been cleaned?
Yes. Mailchimp does everything my email. If you import a new email address it will create a new contact. If you're hoping to edit the old contact, you would have to re-subscribe the bad email address and then edit it manually.
There's No Data Management Tool in the latest MC version.
Thanks. I need to make an update. You'll now search for your Cleaned contacts -> Press the 3 dots -> Delete Contacts -> "I want to clean up my archive" -> Continue to archive -> "Permanently delete instead"
What about cleaning out unsubscribed... I have 140 in my list. My cleaned number which I am about to dump is 120... Lots of contacts but no need to think my list is 260 larger than it really is... Thanks
You want to Archive unsubscribed contacts. It will take them out of your counted contacts, but also allow them to resubscribe in the future. springaheadmedia.com/2022/07/21/lower-your-mailchimp-bill-archive-your-unsubscribed-contacts/
