Just my opinion but I think it’s silly to get upset about not being able to see the names of colors in English. Before I touch a color in a pan with my wet brush, I often couldn’t tell your the exact name of the paint. But because I do color swatches of all the paints in my palettes, I know what it is. I’m working with the way the color looks when activated, it’s name means less. At the moment I have some new Qor paints but haven’t been strong enough to do the searches and the color wheel that I usually do too. I’m healing from breaking my back in 7 places and it’s really going very slowly, due to my health and age (69). Love watching you paint, or listening to your evaluation of a product. It helps enormously! Annie in TN
I had the opaque watercolors in school to. Thats' 43 years ago when I was in the First Class...till end of my school Time I uses this Watercolors in germany
Also, can assure you that the opaque ones are pretty lightfast, too. I still got pictures lying around, that I painted in primary school or middle school which are at least 10 to 15 years and they still look literally the same as when I did them.
I was given a lightly used set from the seventies, I loved them. I was gifted a set of the transparent ones in 2009, from an artist who didn't like them, I could hardly believe I was gifted a barely used set with the cups. I don't know about the washable paint box sets, but the k24, the pro, and the transparent seem to be lightfast. I was happy when my grandkid saw me browsing, said she wanted to try some. I'm finding the opaque paint is great on hot press, while the transparent are great on cold press paper. The opaque paint can be used like gouache or tempera, and both types of paint have been good with Chinese brush painting techniques. old video, but still good, like the paint. They have a pro set, It is harder to find, but worth trying.
Thanks for making this video. I bought these forever ago and never used them so it's good to know their qualities beforehand. And I find it fascinating that German children are supplied which such great watercolor when watercolors in the US that are targeted for children are crap with barely any pigment. Painting with that crappy paint as a child really soured me on watercolor painting and I never picked up a brush again until I became an adult.
Not sure if I commented before, (sorry if I did but I was looking at Pelikan reviews again.) but both the opaque & transparent are fabulous, if not technically "lightfast" (no disclosure of pigments) but I would say they're just shy of being pro. I always sing the praises of Pelikan.I'm surprised they're not more popular!
I've never heard of these before! The containers kind of look goofy and chunky and childish, but that's actually what I like about them! Thanks for introducing me to something new! =^.^=
I‘m german, I used the opaque paints in school, and the tube of paint that comes with it (Deckweiß) was actually your lifesaver if you messed up.... we would always just use it to cover the mistakes and try to put more watercolour on top 😂😂😂
my mom gave me her older version of the opaque set that she found while cleaning recently, the older packaging seems a bit better and the color names are on both trays but other than that they seem the same.
I have both sets. For some reason, the opaque set is marketed as "gouache" but it is clearly NOT that opaque - I would say they are semi-opaque at the best. I like the transparent paint too but dislike the case (too bulky). I took out the paints and put them in the large tin that I got from QoR's 24 tubes - the pans fit perfectly :) It would be nice if the Pelikan manufacturer can provide the pigments information...
I’m with you on wanting pigment info from Pelikan! Maybe I could investigate and see if they’ll give me any information. They are a bit of a hybrid between gouache and watercolor, and sometimes that can yield some awesome results. How are you liking the QoR watercolors? They’re so vibrant!
@@ArtistJane Interesting. I just recently acquired the sets and will play with them (see what happens). QoR are amazing - I love them. I highly recommend the 24 tube set (very good range of colors), not the pan set (too expensive although nice too). The "spreading" property does require some practice to get used to it... but I like it!
@8 bit synth While you can use white to increase the opacity, you inadvertently change the actual pigment/color. The opacity of gouache is not from mixture with white, it is from the pigment itself and how big its particles are - the particles of Gouache are much larger than watercolor.
Hi, I have those, but different box. The box is metalic, and most of the texts are in German. I want to know how do I use the Chinese White "Deckweiß" added to this. Is it like acrylic that when you add the paint and mix it with the watercolor?
I have the school set as well but it also came with 3 different sized watercolour paint brushes, which incidentally fit perfectly into the rectangular paint case. Looks like the newer version doesn't include the brushes. That is very unfortunate. I too find the placement of the colour names awkward especially since I accidentally dropped the case and all the watercolours fell out and I couldn't put them back where they belonged. Overall, I think these are great paints and a great set.
Hi, if you lift the pans up in opaque set the names are there (in English). Mind you I only found them after I’d spent half an hour of checking on a German / English site. Loved your review by they way. Regards Rhonda (Australia)
Thank you, Rhonda! I remember seeing those later on, and felt that was extremely cool. I love the Pelikan brand. I gave the opaque set away in a giveaway, which I do frequently, so keep your eyes peeled!
Hmm. It’s strange that in the lower palette the color are not named. I own an older version of the opaque color palette and they are named. The first one is named of course because they are the officially standardized 12 colors for school use. As other German commenters already said, every German schoolchild has one of these :)
got the old opaque ones from my little brother, he has just finished school. here in germany almost everyone had them xD and almost everyone lost them once in school XD i´m now 26 years old and just discovered that there is a difference between "Deckfarben" and " aquarell-farben" always thought watercolor=watercolor... now i´m sitting here on three sets of opaque watercolors and a bunch of old almost dried gouache tubes and i´m totally lost haha
I have both sets but the boxes are different. I like chunky boxes. The only drawback I see is you can't separate the lid to wash it, something I like to do
Currently rewatching, because I recently cleaned up my artsy/craftsy/ bookworm hideout and I just rediscovered the leaflet that came with my transparent watercolour box - the colours are all named in that one (even in English) If I had trouble with the pans being unnamed (I'd probably have more trouble with that "relief print" they used for that, it's horrible to read), I'd either just stick some actual labels with the colours' English names in - or just try to remember the German ones - I remember like half of my palette's paints by their English names, can't be so hard to remember some German ones ;)
If you want to buy these you have to consider that the opaque set was made for children it's probably not really light-fast. I use them in school (I'm German, too) and I used them to start out but I can't recommend them if you want to get more into watercolor. For sketches they are just fine but for illustration I would recommend the transparent set or other student grade paints but you can of course create beautiful artwork with them, too!
nox5555 You are right. They are marketed as „lichtecht“, so they should be lightfast. And all my and my brother‘s paintings from way back that are still displayed in my parent‘s home look great. Well, at least the colors do.
It would depend on the frequency of use and how you take care of them ultimately, but I can say personally that both sets have lasted me 2 years. The opaque set was in a giveaway a few months ago, but if I were to recommend either, I’d say go for the transparent. I feel the quality of both are great, and a good watercolor pan set can last well over a decade if it’s good quality and taken care of.
Katy Russell I have the 24 set. There’s Blue Green (bottom tray), Turquoise Blue, Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine (working backwards). 9 inch long, straight black box with everything nicely labeled. I spent 25 years mostly working with gouache so I’m now rediscovering my old supplies.
Katy Russell Sorry I hadn’t seen that you’d replied. I can take a picture but I’m not sure the color differences will be accurate, and then there’s the problem of where I can post it so you can see it.

I beleave that was a better way then this big ugly plastic stuff. the colors are in the same very good quality till today.
I grew up with pelikan paints in school. Back then they came in nice metal tins. I still like the colors but really dislike both the bulky plastic heavy boxes. You can put them in the recycling but in the USA they end up on the landfill for sure or else they might try to burn them. Please Pelikan go back to metal boxes. Please.
in germany every kid in elementary school has the opaque paint for arts lesson! 😁 im still painting with them sometimes, they have their advantages!
Franziska Reinecke yap:D i Need to find mine
+Franziska Reinecke That's pretty awesome you had them in grade school! We had crayola which were sub par to this brand for sure! I'm enjoying them :)
I got both. The opaque ones from school (👋 from Germany) and the 12 pan transparent ones as my starter water colour set :3
Omg I was just about to say this lol
I have the opaque ones from like 20 years ago. It hasn't changed much. I just dug mine of the garage this afternoon

Yep, those opaque ones (usually as a 12 pan set) are a staple supply in primary schools all over Germany ^^'
Also, can assure you that the opaque ones are pretty lightfast, too. I still got pictures lying around, that I painted in primary school or middle school which are at least 10 to 15 years and they still look literally the same as when I did them.

I know I’m surprised by that too!
I use this sef for about 3 yeart now they are well pigmented i was very suprised so rich in color almost as artist grade paints love them !
PS. i ment the opaque pelikans
I've never heard of these before! The containers kind of look goofy and chunky and childish, but that's actually what I like about them! Thanks for introducing me to something new! =^.^=
I use the opposite side of the mixing tray on the larger set and it is marvelous!
I‘m german, I used the opaque paints in school, and the tube of paint that comes with it (Deckweiß) was actually your lifesaver if you messed up.... we would always just use it to cover the mistakes and try to put more watercolour on top 😂😂😂
Yeah. I'm dutch and we had to buy these for 7th grade art class

I have the opaque watercolors and with mine both trays have named colours.
😀 Just bought the opaque one for 1 Euro (brand new) at a flea market in Germany today. Reminded me of my school days.

Hi, do you know any info about the 1970s 1980s pelican 12 transparent set that came in a rectangular black box???
I’m sorry, Katy. I sure don’t.

atleast the older ones are super lightfast. found some realy realy old painting and they look pretty good even after 30+years

How long do you think a set would last?

If it's any help the opaque has lasted me 5 years
Hi, do you have the names of the blues that were in the 12 set in the 80s? It was a black box.

+Judy Moore Perez Oh no! They are alive and well, and also sell a great line of fountain pen inks and pens on their website.
Artist Jane Bush
Yeah! I recently bought a fountain pen and it was smooooth
they pop out because you can buy the colours separately
That's awesome! Thank you for the tip!
