      Yes, it's time. Plot should be Vincent a top ranked player in the world. Hustling his way to build up his bank roll. Wins a giant tournament. Closing scene they are interviewing him and they ask him "how does it feel to be the best 9 ball player in the country?" He replies, "well I always knew only one guy today could be the best, but I have to admit, there's been only one person throughout my carer that I couldn't beat." Then it goes to the end credits with the whistle close out song.

    It doesn't really matter whether Eddie Felson wins or loses since he has already won by giving up the money Vincent gives him. Spiritually and morally, Eddie Felson has rearmed, he's back to being the whole boy who learns his lesson at the end of The Hustler. Whether he wins or loses the games with Vincent, Eddie will be unwavering and confident, and that will be his victory. those kinds of lessons are vital, they are not learned in the game and they certainly have nothing to do with "winning or losing".

    Great movie--no question. But "The Hustler" is a work of art--a masterpiece!! (And it has Jackie Gleason--he's only on screen for about 20 minutes but his portrayal of "Minnesota Fats" exudes a style that nobody in the sequel can come close to.)

    • @kennethfharkin
      @kennethfharkin ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gleason owned the screen while he was on it. Everyone thought of him as a funny man, a great funny man but only a funny man. He knocked it entirely out of the park with his performance. Just as Felson in the film couldn't take his eyes off him and marveled at him early in their encounter so too was the audience glued to him. When in their first encounter after playing all night and into the day he gets all cleaned up, puts his suit jacket back on, straightens his tie then turns to Eddie and says "Let's play some pool" it was simply stunning in the elegance of its delivery.

    Scorsese did not want to do this film. The Last Temptation of Christ was tops on his want to do list. He was having trouble with studio backing because of the heat they knew they were going to get from Last Temptation because of it's content. They promised Scorsese the backing for it if he would do this. They liked the story for Color, it was relatively low budget and short film schedule, and they figured a Scorsese-Newman-Cruise trifecta could not miss. They figured right.

      @@Eclipse2582 Correction: The CAPE FEAR bargain was actually because of SCHINDLER'S LIST. Scorsese was to originally direct that (and he was the one who hired Steven Zaillian to write the script), but the controversy he got into over THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST paired with him feeling that he may not be able to do justice was what led him to back out of that. In exchange, Scorsese directed CAPE FEAR (which Spielberg executive produced).

      He was playing with a custom Joss cue. So were Julian and Vincent. Joss was contracted to make a "Balabushka" for the movie, and it became so popular that they made it a regular model cue you could order from them. Mike Sigel was the technical advisor on this film, and also coached Cruise to look the part when he played, and Sigel had a connection with Dan Jane, cue maker and owner of Joss Cues (in Maryland).
      One of Dan's protégé left the company to found Joss West Cues, not to be confused with the original Joss Cues in Maryland. Dan Jane just passed away a couple of months ago or so, so now his cues are worth even more than they were prior to his passing.

    Reevaluating this movie now and everyone's attention at the time was on Mastrantonio and Newman, but Tom Cruise was very much holding his own with them. The attacks on his acting back then were just completely unfair.

    The plot hole I see is that Vincent did not owe any % of the winnings from the game he dumped. Eddie ended all split deals at their last meeting. Maybe Vincent also knew this and was showing his ass to Eddie by giving him money he didn't owe him and gloating about losing so convincingly, but it really came across that he thought he owed it...and that kind of subtlety isn't Vincent's style. I think Vincent grew up and he didn't like the hustle as much as liked the straight game. and now Eddie only likes the straight game... so they switched roles. Eddie is using the exact line "lets just play to play. I want your best game." on Vincent that Vincent used on Julian when he first sees him at the point all Eddie knows is the hustle and all Vincent knows is the straight game. deep shit going on here.

      Vincent dumped because he wanted to get back at Eddie for using him. Vincent was unexperienced as a road player and just wanted to play his best game every time he stepped to the table. Eddie tried to teach him that sometimes when you lose, you win. Vincent didn't really wanna be a hustler. He wanted to be the best player and was cocky because he knew he was. Eddie looked at it as a business investment which set Vincent off once he realized what their whole "partnership" meant.

    The room they were in was empty. What if the buildings caretaker said 'this room is closed after 5 minutes?'.
    Would they get it on again or just wait for the next competition?

    They should have revealed that Eddie was hustling Vincent since they started. The last game should have had Eddie run 7 racks straight while explaining the long con he pulled on Vincent

  • @adamcollins915

    Not sure who would win. Eddie was playing well. Winning matches in tournaments. He seemed confident & wanted to play Vincent. Had experience on his side.
    Vincent seemed confident. Maybe over confident. He ducked playing Eddie properly in the tournament. Choosing to go for easy money.
    Result - a close match & buddies again afterwards. Although not working together again.

    I still don't understand this movie. Can someone explain it to me?
    How did Eddie use Vince? What was the con? Did Eddie lose to Forrest Whitaker on purpose?

    • @mattdawson5007
      @mattdawson5007 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It wasn't a con. But, Eddie had been put out of big time pool 25 years prior. (The Hustler)
      Vincent woke up the old beast in Eddie. He used Vincent to get back in the game.
      When Eddie loses to Amos (Forest W.) it's the wake up call to Eddie that he's not as sharp as he used to be. But, he realized that he needed to go back to the practice room if he wanted to compete at the highest level.

  • @adamcollins915

    Suspect it would be a long game. Best of 50?
    Eddie had got himself back into good physical shape & was playing well. He wanted to win or lose to a Vincent playing at 100%.

      @@JohnS-il1dr true and honestly I don’t really know lol. Cause Vincent missed KEY shots against Eddie on the game he dumped. Shots to win which would have gave Vincent the game. And when Vincent asked Eddie in the “green room”. “Eddie, what are you gonna do when I kick your ass”. Eddie responds “pick myself up and let you kick me again”. Why was he basically accepting that he could lose but he would eventually beat him in other competitions yk? I don’t know lol i never truly know and I think that’s beauty of this film. The screenplay leaves it up to the audience’s interpretation. You could say vincent cause he’s young and it’s a “young man’s game”. & “The Hustler” isn’t what he used to be but he has the best thing. A kid who is.
      Or you could say Eddie won. Because he’s “Fast FKN EDDIE”!
      I don’t know and nobody will unfortunately. But anyways what a picture!

    Beat a guy back in the 90s who wore the Eddie glasses. I hustled him for 3 days straight! I beat him getting the 7 two races to 10, beat him 3 sets getting the 8 in the same races. Next day played him in a race to 25 dead even with a doubled bet. Then gave him the 8 on the third day for 5k all of which I had won in a 10 a head set! Guy couldn’t believe he was being hustled because he thought he was the man! Sad thing is I could have gave him the 7 if he hadn’t went busto!! Damn I miss the days of hustling pool before the internet and camera phones ruin the art form. Now you can go 3000 miles away and some guy will take a picture and post it on social media and 2 minutes later ask for weight in a $20 set!!
