    Great vid! Hmm, wonder how many the family can make in one weekend. It will be a while but I think they will get tired of looking at the barren earth. I'll have to look up your evergreen vid.

    Neat trees, and a nice video. You reminded me that I have a box of Scenic Express "Super Trees" that has been waiting in the top of the garage. Your easy step-by-step info is inspiring me to finally finish them up and get them "planted". Even a moderate sized layout soaks up trees like a sponge soaks up water :-) Personally I put my nicer trees up front, then use my older Woodland Scenics foam trees further back. That helps fool the visitors' first impression - they assume all the trees are detailed ones. Thanks for sharing and I'm looking forward to another update when you get a chance.

      Gary, you're welcome. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video and that you've got some Super Trees to put on your layout. Agree with your technique of putting the more detailed trees up close and the putting the less detailed ones in the back. No need to a nice sage brush armature if no one will be able to see the trunk and branches of the tree. Cheers, Kevin

    • @Modeltrains

      Vinny, not a problem. The same technique will work for N scale. Just use smaller armatures. You could also switch to fine ground foam if you think the Super Leaf leaves look too big. Cheers, Kevin

      Anytime. Super Trees are great. Either as stand alone trees, for the larger pieces, or coupled with the Super Sage armatures. One of the easiest methods out there and it produces some of the best looking trees too. Glad to hear the video will help you out. Cheers, Kevin

    The technique is great and the trees look fantastic! Have you ever found anything out in the wild as far as weeds and- or the like, that would look good for the branches? Buying all that scenic express stuff could end up getting expensive.

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment. You can find sage brush and other type natural armatures in the wild as well as some plants that work as well as the super tree material. Just be sure you know the rules about removing stuff from wherever you'd be gathering it whether public or private land. When I factor in my time to go find and collect the materials I find the Scenic Express materials aren't that pricey. Cheers, Kevin

    This was awesome! great looking trees. I have the woodland scenics trees and have been trying to do realistic foliage. I don't care for the clump foliage they put in the kits as to me it looks like broccoli. would you suggest using this tech with these kits too?

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris, thanks for the compliment. I would think using this technique with the Woodland Scenics armature would work fine. Just you wouldn't have quite as realistic look of the bark. Cheers, Kevin

    COOL! I'm interested in making cottonwood trees, do you have a video? Or recommend? Thanks for sharing

  • @thefutureofyesterday8136
    @thefutureofyesterday8136 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have a new subscriber in me. Great job with the trees and honestly if they were put in a woodland scenics box I wouldn't know the difference. Scenery can be very very expensive. The engines are a chunk of change along with our rolling stock and the list goes on. I have no problem with the expenses except the ground cover, bushes, trees, grass etc.. what I am getting at is how much cost do you have into 1 tree? Just like in this video. Thanks in advance.

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment on the trees. Each tree is only a few dollars. A lot of it depends on whether you buy the sage brush armatures or gather them up locally. Cheers, Kevin

  • @InterCity134
    @InterCity134 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool technique. What is missing in this and other videos that describe building your own trees is scale size. How tall should the armatures be for H0 modeling if deciduous trees? Any guidance there ?

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what specific species of tree you're trying to model. For my trees I have my smallest ones about 6" tall and my largest ones about 9" tall. However, there are smaller and larger deciduous trees in reality. You just need to go with what looks right to your eye. Cheers, Kevin

      Yes, working on setting up an ops session now. But that video is probably a couple months off from now. Need to get a few more things done with the layout before its next update, or there won't be much to show--other than some new trees. Thanks for the compliment on the layout. Cheers, Kevin

    How do you get you trains to look all dirty, what do you use?

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just use the regular methods of airbrushing, dry brushing, washes, and chalks. Nothing special. I've actually not weathered very many engines yet and almost none of my cars. One thing to my eye is I like lighter weathering than what a lot of people put on. Just add a bit of grime and road spray along the trucks and long hood, darken the exhaust fans and grills. That's about it. There are lots of good videos on various techniques. The one tips I'd give you is to go lightly at first. You can always add more grime or whatever more easily than you can take it back off if you get too much. Cheers, Kevin
