  • June 25, 1876...Major Marcus Reno crosses the Little Bighorn River hoping to surprise the large Indian encampment in the Valley while Custer moves on north up on the bluffs. NPS Ranger Cliff Nelson tells us about the first actions at the Garryowen Loop in the valley where Reno attempted to attack the Indian village only to have to make a hasty retreat back across the river to fight with Captain Frederick Benteen for two whole days.

I worked on a ranch 16 miles to the east, near the spot where Custer split his command. The country Custer rode over was rolling prairie. The country Reno rode over was much more broken with a lot of hills and creeks. The country Benteen went over much more so with bluffs and valleys.

Sounds like you had a great experience. I did a re-ride from the crows nest down to cross the LBH river where Reno crossed. That was a great experience to see all of that area from horseback. I never tire of the reading, looking at maps over and over. It is an exciting subject that always creates new questions. I used to correspond with Don Weibert a good bit back in the 90s. He used to own the ranch that included the area where Reno skirmished. Thanks for watching.

@@Realstuffadventures Yeah, back when I lived there the Crow's nest was on (I believe) the Secrest ranch, which was to the southeast of the Brooks ranch where I worked. The Brooks ranch was on the south side of 212 and ran nearly to Lodge Grass, with the bulk of Reno Creek running through the ranch.
