Seth MacFarlane performing Ya Got Trouble from The Music Man in the BBC Proms 2012 - Broadway Sound with the John Wilson Orchestra.
Recorded and performed on 27th August and Broadcasted on BBC2 on 1st Sept.
I do not claim to own any content, this belongs to the original broadcaster. I am only uploading this for prosperity's sake.
Seth is a huge musical theater guy. He's really in his element here.
I'm 5 years late but thank you haha
He is in his natural habitat
I watched the Sound of Music for the first time recently and I spotted a few references Family Guy used from that film
Amen to that !! :-)

Seth MacFarlane, a man with incredible musical talent, and the humor of a bored middle schooler.
Too accurate.
I can’t tell if this is supposed to be a negative comment or, I mean I’d take it as a compliment
I feel bad for him honestly, he's so checked out on his comedy stuff but it still makes him money so he sticks with it but when he's singing he seems so content
Accurate, but he’s hilarious
@@reverendglitch
That’s why he sings a lot in his comedies. Best of both worlds.
I would actually like to see a production of Music Man with McFarlane in the lead
Seth MacFarlane is EVERY goddamn character from The Music Man. Like he is that musical personified in a person.
Besides his celebrity, there are so many people that would be better.
SoaringTrumpet perhaps, but i feel like he's wanted this all his life. He's made numerous Music Man references on his show, plus this performance. at the very least, he'd give it his all.
Fair enough, he certainly has the charisma!
Hard to beat the snake-in-the-grass feel Preston was able to pull off.
This is his true calling. He looks so damn happy when hes singing these old songs.
His cartoons are gold but his singing is diamond.
Nice to meet a fellow Zachary
He is great I too would be happy as a lark up there singing with that orchestra & chorus
I've got all of his albums on my phone. He is such an amazing singer with a very rich, warm, silky smooth voice. If he lived back in the 40s, 50s and 60s, he would have been part of the Rat Pack.
fool
For me his cartoons can wither away... but when he sings? Oh lordy.... This is what heaven sounds like :)
I love how iconic his voice is. He was born for show business. It’s hard to speak with such eloquence, animation, wit, and pitch. Love all his work
@MrTsiolkovskyyour jealousy’s showing
hes an interesting case between goofy and sophisticated
(which is... kind of Harold Hill...)
He doesn’t seem goofy at all
John O’Rourke I don’t know. There seems to be quite a bit of goofball there, which is totally a good thing.
sweets08816 I get you but he’s to sharp I think not that o know him !!
John O’Rourke he definitely has wit and a super sharp mind. He does showtunes and has a great Xmas album, then on the opposite end of the spectrum he has songs like the pop tart song, “The Frickin FCC” and “Downs syndrome girl”- all of which are well written songs.
I honestly think if Seth sat down and focused, he could write and star in a Tony winning musical that could run for years.
I definitely agree he could write or co-write and produce a musical, but I think he is too busy to star in a show. If Family Guy ended he could do it.
@@SardonicALLY He really wants to be off of Family Guy at this point, but imagine if he was able to at least take a break to make his own "The Book of Mormon" or some other big musical where he could just show off his talents.
absolutely! he already made so many musical numbers on family guy.
If Trey Parker and Matt Stone can do it, I have 100% faith Seth could top The Book of Mormon easy
Honestly, I would be all for him doing this but he could do it for Star Trek
Bonus points if he adapted Lower Decks for a Broadway musical, I would pay hella money to see that
That's rap in 1950s
Actually, patter songs were best used by Gilbert and Sullivan. Look it up.
Gicole Li "Rock Island" in the Music Man sounded more like a rap than this one'That's my opinion tho
@Chris Railer look up Hugh Jackman doing Rock Island on the old Jay Leno show or at the 2014 Tonys. He clearly agrees with you:-)
But Gicole didn't say patter songs began in the 1950s
Gicole Li it’s 1950s rap and it’s GOOD
This guy has too many talents, why won't he share :(
We all have to eat and Family Guy puts Bread on the table sadly but Seth would be the best Harold Hill
Peter Pan I agree :)
Thanks :)
Peter Pan I would make a good one :P
Really? Phil Hartman was more charming and emotive in this role in The Simpsons.
As much as I love Hugh Jackman, this man right here should have been Broadway's newest Harold Hill.
I'll tell ya Hugh Jackman really brings a visual physical spectacle. It's been great. I hear you though.
I would love to see both... ❤️
Hugh Jackman did a good job, but you should go back and watch the first version of this song, in the 1962 movie "The Music Man" - watch how Robert Preston did this song. Great job, with MORE "personality" than Seth McFarlane did it here. The movie clip is on TH-cam, if you want to search for Robert Preston's version.
HOT DAMN! Live with no breaks. One shot. Fantastic. This gains so much respect from the musical people and musical lovers. THAT was amazing... just like every teenaged baritone male lead in their HS musical....
Seriously though- that was impressive!!! Well done!!!! Can’t believe you picked THIS song to do....
To think that the world was nearly robbed of Seth McFarlane and his talents is scary. Had he managed to catch his flight on September 11th 2001. Thank god he missed the flight.
I love how Sierra Boggess gives him a warm smile and a tap on the back after his performance!
How he remembers all the words here is cray
He a showtunes guy, he probably already had it memorised before he even decided to sing it here.
TwoSlenderMen I know your comment is from a while ago but, of course he had it memorized before he sang it here, otherwise he couldn't have sang it here. I'm just amazed at how he didn't slip up once.
DalueKnightMusic haha they mean that he probably already knew the song growing up since that's the kind of music he's into
Well, The Music Man is Seth's favorite musical so it's pretty obvious he will memorize lyrics by heart!
It's actually a surprisingly easy song to sing
Its not Robert Preston but.... where was he when they casted Matthew Broderick for the remake???
Probably 5th grade.
@@markusnashorn1145 Thanks for the correction.
I could see Bryan Cranston doing this well too 😄
He wasn’t a big name yet, he was just known as the guy who created that short lived tv show family guy, , and wrote a couple episodes of Jonny bravo and Dexters lab
I thought Matthew Broderick did a fantastic job in that film. He has an excellent voice as well as the others who have performed this song originally. :)
I'll be honest. I already knew Seth could sing through 'Family Guy' and 'American Dad.' But I haven't seen someone own a stage like that or obviously enjoy doing it since Jerry Orbach. This is clearly talent at work.
Multi-talented guy, what a great entertainer, epic performance !!!
Exactly this.
He most certainly is that
He's the only one I've ever seen who could do this song almost as well as Robert Preston
Maybe Eric McCormack. He was a far better Harold than I expected. But Seth is neck and neck with Preston.
This is one of the things I love about Family Guy. MacFarlane is obviously a voracious consumer and lover of popular culture and crams as many references as he can into every episode. He could probably do a spot-on impression of Robert Preston if he wanted to, but he seems to be trying to avoid that, but his performance is obviously informed by Preston's.
Definitely better than Matthew Broderick.
He sure is channeling Preston.
Patti LuPone in that interview
This kind of stuff is one of his true passions. Same thing with Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It's why you hear so many of these kinds of songs within the shows.
+Andrew Tolmasoff If only MacFarlane and Parker/Stone didn't have a mutual loathing, otherwise I'd love to see them collaborate together in some musical endeavour.
Secular Scot They don't really, the media just loves to pit people against each other and build feuds out of nothing. They are honestly just apathetic to each other, or curt when the other's mentioned, but when they interact it's always been civil.
Bag of weed
respect levels increasing
imagine Seth and NPH doing a show together
Would buy box seats for the rest of my life.
NPH sucks, but Seth is super talented
Watch the movie A Million Ways to Die in the West
add lin manual miranda and they'll get every Tony.
What's NPH?
wait....WHAT?! the guy who does the voices for most of the Family Guy is legitimately a good singer o.O
Jason Black Seth has been a singer and a wonderful friend of Frank Sinatra JR until he passed away. Frank jr gave him a lot of singing lessons.
He created family guy not just the voic3s
Okay, if there was a future stage production of The Music Man, hire Seth MacFarlane.
I mean, he's a producer and director himself...
P.Z. Arnott norm MacDonald for the anvil salesman
He’d also be an amazing Billy Flynn in Chicago!
No it has to be Lin Manuel-Miranda.
I think he should be Hugh Hackman’s replacement in the upcoming production
Damn he killed it.
Haters of Seth Macfarlane, YOU GOT TROUBLE!
Right in here in TH-cam comments
With a capital T and that rhymes with V and that stands for voice!
Tone Grumbt RIGHT HERE IN RIVER CITY
His voice has nothing to do with his lackluster borderline terrible cartoons and films.
Tone Grumbt Right here in River city.
To the man who said: "MacFarlane is a hack. Strong voice, but zero talent to back it up."
A strong voice IS talent. It may not be everything you need, but it's something. I also find it funny that you posted a comment about his strong voice on a video where he strictly displays his spoken word skills... Oh, and I added in that comma for you so people could fully understand your idiocy.
He's also a songwriter and actor
That was kind of unspoken...
+matt92091 Haters be hating. There is no question how insanely talented Seth is. He just delivers
+matt92091 wow read Sun Tzu Warfare comes in all shapes and sizes.
+matt92091 "where he strictly displays his spoken word skills"
Or lack thereof.
Seth McFarlane has become a national treasure.
Robert Preston defined the role, but Mr. McFarlane can refine it and make it live again. I would love to see a remake of the movie with Seth McFarlane in the lead.
MacFarlane
And my crush on Seth continues ...
80's Girl weird
No not weird. I'm with you on the crush thing.
Same 5 years later now in 2019 almost 2020
:O
So does mine tbh
it continues to astonish me how this man is so intelligent and talented and then see the thinking devoid, fart joke, gross out bullshit products he pumps out
Family guy is a $2 Billion tv show, if you ask me, farts jokes are the smartest thing this guy has done.
You do forget that Seth Macfarlane is currently helping Neil Degrasse Tyson write the show cosmos which wouldn't of even made it's return unless Seth helped revitalize it.
i don't debate it works for him, but that does not make it any less stupid as fuck
hulmad Agreed
human beings are complicated animal ,grow up
Holy shit. This is incredible.
If only Family Guy made less money. Then Fox would let him move on.
TheFoodCannibal he likes making family guy it's his biggest show
Family Guy is amazing.
What’s wrong with family guy bitch
I once read that Seth wants the show to end, but people still watch it and want more. As long as that keeps happening, he keeps it going.
Seth still does acting on the show but at this point he's no longer writing and producing Family Guy.
he's a sweetheart !
Hugh Jackman and Seth MacFarlane should collaborate for a The Music Man Show. The Greatest Showman with the Man of a Hundred Voices
Jackman is starring on Broadway next year in The Music Man so maybe Seth could take over after Hugh wins a TONY next Summer and walks away from the show.
Just realized...he screwed up at the start and said "sure I'm a pool player mighty proud to say it", didnt he? The line is "billiard player" for obvious reasons
Yea, I think he might have caught himself in it (in his head) but knew he had to keep going and couldn't do anything about it. Bet it came from a rehearsal mistake or something.
Oh come on, that's just nit-picking. We all make little mistakes like that in performance, the point is how you cover it, and I thought he did a fine job.
yea i noticed it immediately, but most wouldn't and that's why it pays to just keep on rolling! good to know he's human
To droid327....So what?
@@robertschoonmaker750 it matters from a continuity sense because during the time period when this musical took place, billiards was considered a gentlemen’s game while pool was a game for hustlers. The correct line is “sure I’m a billiards player - mighty proud to say it.” He’s drawing a distinction between billiards and pool; gentlemen and hustlers. He’s a gentleman, and the guys playing pool are trouble. By saying he’s proud to be a “pool” player, he accidentally undermined why anyone should believe him. It was an easy mistake to make, but I doubt most people there even realized it.
such an amazing voice, and a real talented comedian
Oliver Tilly Don't be SILLY.
Chunk Yogurt In addition to Family Guy he was *hilarious* in the Comedy Central roasts
I am in love with this man.
As much as I LOVE Hugh Jackman....I think Seth is the stronger choice
Everyone who is tired of Family Guy: "I hate that man, but that's one hell of a singer!"
I wish Seth would do a singing tour! I feel like it would be such a fun experience!
BILLIARDS PLAYER, Seth! Mighty proud to say it!
THE MUSIC MAN ON BROADWAY STARRING SETH MACFARLANE!!!! Who's with me?!!!
Seth isn't a natural performer though. You can see in this video that he's a bit awkward on stage. He's a singer, not a musical theatre guy.
@@David-ud9ju Only experience will make him less so...so i say give it to him.
Count me in !! :-)
Elphaboy me
@@David-ud9ju I totally hear what you're saying, but I also think that he's someone who just needs a little polishing, I feel like after months of rehearsals he'd be more than fine. I'm not at all worried about a possible "Carrie Underwood in the Sound of Music" situation happening. he is an actor, grant it a voice over artist more than anything but it means he's at least coming from some area of performing as a character and he understands how to be other people, he just needs to get his feet wet with live theatre. I don't think it'd be too much of a challenge for him. especially in a role like Harold Hill who's always "putting on a show" I do understand that'd he'd be a big risk for broadway but I think it'd be one that would really pay off in the long run!
It's nice to see someone like Seth be such a supporter of theatre. It's his broadened interests that lend to his magnificent sense of humor, I think.
A pool table, don't you understand?
Friend, either you're closing your eyes
To a situation you do not wish to acknowledge
Or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated
By the presence of a pool table in your community
Well, ya got trouble my friend, right here
I say, trouble right in River City, why sure, I'm a billiard player
Certainly, mighty proud I say, I'm always mighty proud to say it
I consider that the hours I spend with a cue in my hand are golden
Help you cultivate horse sense and a cool head and a keen eye
Did you ever take and try to find and iron-clad leave for yourself
From a three-rail billiard shot?
But just as I say
It takes judgement, brains and maturity to score
In a balkline game, I say that any boob
Can take and shove a ball in a pocket
And I call that sloth the first big step on the road
To the depths of deg-ra-day
I say, first, medicinal wine from a teaspoon
Then beer from a bottle
And the next thing you know
Your son is playing for money in a pinch-back suit
And listenin' to some big outta town jasper
Hearin' him tell about horse race gamblin'
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no
But a race where they set down right on the horse
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy
Settin' on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil
Well I should say
Now friends, let me tell you what I mean
You got one, two, three, four, five, six pockets in a table
Pockets that mark the difference between a gentleman and a bum
With a capital "B" and that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool
And all week long your River City youth'll be fritterin' away
I say, your young men will be fritterin'
Fritterin' away their noontime, suppertime, choretime too
Get the ball in the pocket, never mind gettin' dandelions pulled
Or the screen door patched or the beef steak pounded
Never mind pumpin' any water
'Til your parents are caught with the cistern empty
On a Saturday night and that's trouble
Yes you got lots and lots of trouble
I'm thinkin' of the kids in the knickerbockers
Shirt-tail young ones, peekin' in the pool hall window after school
You got trouble, folks
Right here in River City, trouble with a capital "T"
And that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool
Now I know all you folks are the right kind of parents
I'm gonna be perfectly frank
Would you like to know what kinda conversation goes on
While they're loafing around that hall?
They be tryin' out Bevo, tryin' out cubebs
Tryin' out Tailor Mades like cigarette fiends
And braggin' all about how they're gonna cover up
A tell-tale breath with Sen-Sen
One fine night, they leave the pool hall
Heading for the dance at the Arm'ry
Libertine men and scarlet women, and ragtime, shameless music
That'll grab your son, your daught with the arms of a jungle, animal instinct
Mass-staria
Friends, the idle brain is the devil's playground
Trouble (oh we got trouble)
Right here in River City (right here in River City)
With a capital "T" and that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool
(That stands for pool)
We've surely got trouble (we've surely got trouble)
Right here in River City (right here)
Gotta figure out a way to keep the young ones moral after school
(Our children's children gonna have trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble...)
Mothers of River City, heed that warning before it's too late
Watch for the the tell-tale signs of corruption
The minute your son leaves the house
Does he re-buckle his knickerbockers below the knee?
Is there a nicotine stain on his index finger?
A dime novel hidden in the corn crib?
Is he starting to memorise jokes from Cap'n Billy's Whiz Bang?
Are certain words creeping into his conversation
Words like, like "swell"? (Trouble, trouble, trouble)
And "so's your old man? (Trouble, trouble, trouble)
Well if so, my friends, you got trouble (oh we got trouble)
Right here in River City (right here in River City)
With a capital "T" and that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool
(That stands for pool)
We've surely got trouble (we've surely got trouble)
Right here in River City (right here)
Remember the Maine, Plymouth Rock and the Golden Rule
(Our children's children gonna have trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble...)
Oh we got trouble, we're in terrible, terrible trouble
That game with the fifteen numbered balls is a devil's tool (devil's tool)
Oh yes we got trouble, trouble, trouble
(Oh yes we got trouble here, we got big, big trouble)
With a "T" (with a capital "T")
Gotta rhyme it with "P" (gotta rhyme with "P")
And that stands for pool (that stands for pool)
This man is the full package
Seths' parents must have used cheat codes when they made Seth.
Beautiful string arrangement by Wilson
As a student studying opera, it is a really interesting choice seth made by singing the last "pool" and moving to the "L" so early in the last note. It is much harder to resonate on the sound than it would be if he sang on the vowel. Opera singers are trained to maximize resonance so this would be "wrong" in most settings, but in a contemporary work like this and with a singer as talented as Seth, I'm pretty sure it was intentional. I love this choice.
I think he did it so it didn’t sound like poo. He’s really particular about enunciation and pronunciation
This is by far the best thing that I have ever seen. Urgghh.
Seth MacFarlane always looks happiest when he's doing musical theatre
Seth heckin McFarlane. He needs to drop Family Guy for a little. Holy crap this is so great. I need to see him on broadway. Holy moly.
Somewhere there's an alternate universe where MacFarlane became a song and dance man instead of a cartoon creator. Can we have that universe?
Who would call him a hack? He's incredible.
Words...words like “swell”😦 and “so’s your old man!” 😱
Please let there be a musical episode of The Orville. I can absolutely see Captain Mercer singing this.
Legend
He is far, far more talented than regular men on this Earth.
Agreed. He's more talented than most people in general.
I saw Sammy Davis perform this on a London stage it was amazing so much energy put into it.Such a talented performer
Sammy Davis,Jr. and Robert Preston…Mega🌟Watt Stars!
In the Golden Era of Broadway of their day, were today’s fawned over poor man’s Dick Haymes cast as Prof. Harold Hill, N.Y. Times theater critic Walter Kerr would not merely pillory, pummel & pan this performance ~ the show would close in less than a month, if that.
Moreover, to mention this rank amateur’s name in the same sentence with that of Broadway legend Robert Preston is an abomination of the first order. Those who would do so serve to demonstrate but one thing…neither they nor the object of idolatry are the brightest bulbs…on the marquee! 🤩
Seth sounds so much like Robert Preston, with his own MacFarlaneian style mixed in.
We got Shipoopi in Family Guy and this here. Absolutely wonderful! I had no idea this existed.
A wild Sierra appears at the end!
Yeah I know, I was enjoying the video and all, and just as it’s about to end, a wild Christine appears!
He's the best, next to Preston. Excellent.
When the orchestra is smiling along to your performance - well done!

Who would think that this man here is the creator of the movie "Ted" with all those raunchy guy jokes & those adult animated sitcoms? He looks so normal and is so awesome here!
I love that he can do both.
And then he made the Orville, a great SciFi
It's really unfair. Just how many talents does this amazing man have???
Tough tough song to sing ... great job.
WOW! excellent rendition and performance! MacFarlane can sing!
monorail.....
Steve Hicks Mono... D'oh!

Steve Hicks God bless Phil Hartman
The most talented man on earth
MacFarlane should have updated the lyrics: "Are certain words creeping into his conversation? Words.. like 'Giggity' and "Damn you vile, woman!" and "Bird is the word!" ? "
I agree with most others, I think I’d enjoy seeing Seth as Prof. Hall in a new production.
This one-off won’t top Robert Preston’s performance in the 1957 film, but... it comes closer than anything I’ve seen. And, with many rehearsals, I’d bet Seth could knock it out of the park.
It’s as if Seth finally became comfortable with his performance only in the last 30 seconds of this one... watch again and you’ll see. With more time, he’d master it for sure.
He has an excellent voice with very good presence. Very crisp enunciation as well.
Is there no end to this mans talents? He's really got a very good voice and can certainly carry a tune. Very impressed indeed!
He’s better at patter songs than Peter Griffin.
Brian Griffin
I know! I love that scene.
@@hollyandersonsmusic3226 Yeah I do like it as well
Oh man, now I want to hear him do it again as Peter. 😄
Eek I love him so much!!! So much talent!
0:21 "why SURE I'm a pool player" said Harold Hill while ranting about the dangers of playing pool
I wanted to go to this but it was sold out when I tried to book. Thank you for showing me what might have been.
He does a nice job, but makes a mistake early on when he say's "I'm a pool player." The lyric is "I'm a billiard player" -- in fact the song is about Professor Hill convincing the people of River City that billiards is good, but pool is a corrupting game.
Oh yes, you are right.
And also it's "MAKE an iron-clad lead FOR yourself" not "GIVE an iron-clad lead TO yourself", but that's merely a quibble over petty details :)
Nevertheless it was a valiant effort for an relative amateur.
Nerves. He's talented as hell, but this is a HARD song to perform.
@@AuspexAO I've sung on stage and I can't imagine trying to perform this song. Mad respect.
SM is so incredibly talented in so many areas.
His voice is stunning. I could listen to it forever. He’s such a talented human in so many ways, but his vocals definitely take the care ❤️
my two favourite Seth songs are “The Sadder But Wiser Girl” and “No Moon At All”. they’re fantastic.
That was fookin' epic
The amount of talent and good looks this man has is sickening! And totally unfair!
Surprisingly good.
He is Multi-talented.
I had no idea MacFarlane could be so good, absolutely stunning patter
Is there a goddamn thing this man can't do?
he cant write good jokes without cutaway gags but his voice acting is just top notch
the exceptions being his movies
Have you watched American Dad? The whole thing is him proving he CAN make funny jokes without cutaways. It's hilarious! This guy is gold, I think what you said was pretty pretentious really.
True that man. American Dad. The Futurama to Family Guys late SImpsons
American Dad and Family guy will never even come close to reaching Futurama's greatness.
Now that NBC has announced they're doing a live broadcast version of this in 2015, I'm hoping someone at the network has seen this. I think he'd be a stellar Harold Hill.
Thank god I'm not the only person who thinks this! He'd be great!
LOL! They will probably be dumb and get Matthew Broderick...cuz he was "soooooooooooooo" good...(not)
If they get Broderick I'll kill everything.
William McAvoy If they ask Broderick, I'll personally dig up Robert Preston and bring him back to life.
^Not a bad idea...
Seth is so BOSS. With a capital B that rhymes with C that stands for Cool!
And this proves MacFarlane would have done a far better job than Broderick could have dreamed to have done...
So basically an amped up version of Brian! Very nice!
This man is the type of person kids today need to aim to replicate, this guy is the definition of multiple intelligence.
Cote X thank you for understanding 😂
This should be a role model not some people who teach children that you have to be rich to be amazing
Hey, how ya doing? At the time this comment was posted, I just turned 14. I’m a huge fan of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and even Gene Kelly. Does this mean I qualify?
Sadly kids will only try to be TH-cam famous. Like that's a thing. I pitty those of us that will live to see a future where actual entertainment is replaced with pewdiepie screeching at a video game for 30mins each week. Such a sorry state we have come too.
