@@shahshakuras700 bodkin couldn't damage good quality armor though. Let alone bodkin from longbow, even a shoot from pistol couldn't penetrate a properly made plate armor. Only a large, large caliber musket that could put holes in it.

@@Hexados-666 that's why I said good quality armor. In the past, armor was tested or "proofed" By getting shot at by a crossbow on point blank range. If the result is just a dent, then the armor is "proof". Later on as handheld firearm became more and more powerful, armorer began proofing their armor using pistol instead. You could search on the internet about " Proofed armor" Or "armor of proof" And found many examples of bulletproof" armor.

The armour this reproduction is based off would have cost 1.2 million dollars in modern money . While the reproduction is anywhere from 20-50k
War Kryhme well not to be that rich. There were multiple qualities of steel and you could buy 2nd hand stuff or off the shelf. You could also buy buy 1 piece at a time.

I can't even imagine the skill and time somebody needed in the 15th century to craft something like this with nothing but his hands and (comparable) primitive tools.
My ancestors during the 15th century were helmet smiths from germany. They even were awarded with a heraldry because they forged helmets for the duke. Don't know much about it but we still have their heraldry to this day, as long as the last name which translates to "helm-maker" from german to english.
If their work was even half as good as the armor in the video they must have been very skilled.

Tools were anything but primitive. An armourers shop would have a bewildering array of different types of hammers, stake tools, chisels, vises, and to top it all off, very often water-powered wheels for grinding and polishing the finished work.
@@althesmith That's why i said "comparable". They had no machines, tools or smelters powered by electricity. And no furnace could produce the temperatures that are possible today. That's also a reason why steel wasn't as good and flawless back then.

Also, wearing a full mail shirt in addition to his plate armor would make him tire very quickly because of the weight.

When I was in the Marine Corps as a running joke I would have a boot (new guy to the unit) on my fireteam as my "squire". I would have him put my plate carrier and helmet on me like a squire gearing up a knight. I hope he carried on the tradition, just a bit of fun for the guys haha.

@@xxxxxx5868 Kevlar is pretty useless against sharp things. Turns out, kevlar isn't terribly resilient against being slashed or pierced. It's very optimised for extremely fast moving, small projectiles. Maybe useful against crossbows, but not much else

@@MarikHavair It's funny, the gothic style seems to be more preferred right up until talking about the helmets. I've grown to quite like the German sallet (both aesthetically and in design), but most seem to prefer the Armet, which is usually associated with Italian kits.

im a blacksmith, and let me tell you something...to even attempt to make this sort of harness is EXTREMELY difficult. The difference between a blacksmith, and an armourer is great. To build armour you need a totally different skill set and tools. Believe me I have made some armour, but it was just plain simple spaulders with 3 lames.
Have to say, I loved narrating these. They were expertly written and beautifully shot. Run my own history company now but never would have without my experience at this incredible museum.

The most amazing aspect of this and other armor is the symmetry that the makers were able to achieve without modern tools. Imagine getting down to the last detail and then gumping up the flutes. Just incredible this and all other armor work.

Eduardo Kopik Don't make me laugh, without modern regulation (that forcibly keep normal people from competing with big companies) everyone who had some land to grow crops/fruit would be making their own alcohol. And since in medieval times almost everyone was a farmer, alcohol was really easy to get, so much so that peasants preferred to drink beer over water (beer was the soft drink of the medieval world).
Alcohol was generally much safer to consume than water in this time period. Everyone drank, even very young children.

It's common to portray them as "drunken bastards" in dark fantasy (Game of Thrones, Dragon Age, etc) but make no mistake knights were human beings like you. They were just as capable of compassion and sincerity as anyone else, and some genuinely aspired to (and even lived up to!) ideals of chivalry.

Hải Đỗ use a special mixed polearm called a bill hook. It can be used to hook into the joints of the armor and yank the knight anywhere you please, and then stab into the week points. It’s advisable to do this with some comrades at your back.
You've got a helmet, shield, and perhaps some sort of gambeson or even mail if you're lucky to protect you, and given a basic sword that hardly even phases a person in full plate to kill this experienced, skilled, well armed, and seemingly invincible warrior.

What's funny is that, when it comes to defense against edged weapons, this armor is still greatly superior to the stuff we use today. This is much more maneuverable and protective than any stab vest, but full plate is, regretfully, completely useless against gunfire.
well depends. the full plate was still in use after the gun had entered the battlefiel and could sucscsesfully stop musket balls. but later in the period the guns became much better and more widesprad. against modern gunfire it would not stand a chance so i agree on that XD
It would also mean the velocity of the bullet went through the metal and into the mans chest, often resulting in broken ribs, sternum, the metal could also bend inward making it difficult to breathe. Generally these injuries were blunt force trauma and were often just as deadly

I know. Your sword will definitely 'get dirty' if you're actually using it anyway, so some fingerprints aren't a big deal. It's just the instinct in me reacting, as I keep steel arms and know how one smudge left unchecked can lead to a spot of awful rust. Obviously these things would be checked for damaged, repaired if needed, cleaned and re-oiled afterward. (So much work, really).
The gauntlets have leather gloves though.

The musical selections were very tasteful, and period correct. Nicely done! I thought it was especially appropriate to hear the 15th century chanson "L'homme Armé"("The Armed Man"). Just the historical context around the appearance of that song, circa 1450s, is very interesting in its own right!

You could loot you could travel you could have anything you want. Provided you were a knight
It was very hard to kill a full armored knight mounted or dismounted, research about the old texts, even tho they were with cuts, bashed, without nose or a finger, pierced by an arrow and bleeding they still could fight and kill you one on one.

Why would that be useless? The plate would add protection against knives, somewhat to an extent bullets, and debris, while the kevlar, ceramics, and plastics would offer more protection against bullets and shrapnel.
It would almost be like wearing a tank, though maybe this system could only work with an exoskeleton attached to the legs to take most of the load so I do see where it fails.
Put a functioning exo suit under it with a good system of heat venting, air filtration and air conditioning, plus battery life and you're onto something, but it's basically a mech already. Otherwise, 'plate' is nearly pointless. You no longer use plate as infantry protection against the extremely high velocity projectiles we now use, instead slapping it onto big vehicles with powerful engines instead. Know why?
Because to attain a valid level of say, battle rifle (7.62x54mm), or even .50 caliber/medium MG protection, the steel has to be thick enough that it's weight is incredibly prohibitive to wear for a soldier. Kevlar *already* offers excellent protection against both knives *and shrapnel*. All you really need is Ceramic plating over the majority of the body or the more likely places to be hit, (chest, head, thighs, some supplemental bits on the arms and shins and shoulders) and a mix of both in a sturdy helmet, and well-made kevlar weaves with padding everywhere else.
But seriously, steel plated armor is nearly pointless on people due to how easily it is pierced by even quite early 20th century firearms, and many before that. This idea was tampered with quite a bit in WWI, if you want to look at some interesting concepts, but many forms of personal steel shielding that were experimented with were ultimately useless against a single standard infantry rifle caliber round as they were too thin, (because they needed to be portable).
While yes, steel would still be far better than nothing versus say, shrapnel, ceramic is already a bit lighter and more effective at shrugging off bullets while still being man-portable.
The other issue with having a thick steel exosuit is in .. weight, believe it or not. In certain environments, something that godawfully heavy will simply not 'work' without tank treads or very long legs, or wider robofeet. That's part of the positives of tank treads.. wheels would sink into the ground due to the excessive weight of the armor, whereas the treads spread that force out over an enormous surface area comparatively speaking.
tbh it would disappoint you. I've worn the whole kit, it's hardly all encompassing, and hardly a work of art.
The music at the end made me kind of sad because that was the end of medieval armour even if we have things such as guns, tanks, grenades and nukes as weapons the sword and knights armour would still be my favourite forever.
You might like exoskeletons, they might combine the beauty of body armor with artificial muscles.
I feel like modern weapons are too powerful, there's something amazing about using your strength and skill to fight.

As a 2 year practitioner of sword martial arts, it would be terrifying to go against a trained knight without a harness of my own. I don't think most people understand just how protective these things were.

The samurai weren't stupid, they'd know their swords can't cut through metal armor. The samurai's armor was a lamellar construction similar to the coat of plates that the 13th century knight wore but over a larger portion of their bodies. A Sengoku Jidai samurai would have similar levels of protection to the 14th century knight. It would still be an uphill battle for the samurai, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't call as one sided as that.
And both knight and samurai would prefer to fight on horseback and with lances anyway.
But they are not good against maces, warhammers and etc.

as somebody who looks at a cast aluminum block and thinks "wow that's an expensive part" that armor is jaw dropping.

The helmshmied harness, probably the most intricate and decadent of late 15th century Gothic plate. The best replica I have ever seen of this harness was bespoke made by William of Dragon Armourie and cost £80,000 which is over $100000.

Very informative as a documentary. :)
It's interesting to see interpretations of noble houses and armor in science fiction and fantasy as well. For instance, in Dune, members of noble houses wear field projectors that impede projectiles in proportion to their kinetic energy, so bullets, arrows, and even the shock wave of an explosion are absorbed without damage to the wearer. They react violently with energy weapons like lasers, resulting in a custom forbidding noble houses to employ lasers (and a preceding tactic to use such fields like mines to set off explosions that tended to destroy troops using lasers), and can be pierced by low-velocity movements, leading to nobles learning knife fighting techniques (hence the quote "the slow blade pierces the shield," which is also used as a metaphor similar to "revenge is a dish best served cold," indicating that a careful plan will win out where a rush to act may fail).
After a grueling fight the knight died with a toothpick in his eyes😂

Just think, back in the day they didn't have machines. The amount of time, effort and dedication to hand craft this armour would have been immense.
Absolutely stunning armour.
Just one note, though: We never stopped using metal armour. While modern day soldiers don't wear full plate harnesses anymore (more's the pity) there are plenty of modern ballistic helmets, vests, and even some other armour sections (usually for the arms, shoulders and upper legs) which are made of steel. The difference is that now days, the steel plates are much, much thicker and subsequently, smaller and more simplistic, and are usually worn underneath layers of kevlar and fabric.
we use full plate armor till today... they are so big that 3 to 4 fit inside...today they are called tank.. the knights of the modern battlefield
cain modern helmets are made of synthetics not steel and while some cheaper plates are made of stuff like AR500, for the most part, the stuff issue is ceramic

I asked armorsmiths here in Ukraine how mush would it make to produce such a full set of gothic armor (not ornated). So, it comes about €4500-€5000, plus €1500 for a real two-handed sword. And let's not forget about trained war horse and its protection, too. And I don't even think how much can cost a decent set of ornated tournament armor.
And, of course, knights normally have had retinue, so called 'spear' - at least 2-3 squires, servants, etc. Rich knights travelled with some 20-30 men, or even more. And all of them had to be dressed, fed and armed in due course.
Ok. Why I'm writing this at 4 a.m., that's the question...
4000-5000 is actually pretty cheap for a full suit of plate , most of the estimates i've seen were around 10,000-30,000 for a full suit of fitted plate armor

There isn't anything between the bottom of the cuirass and the top of the cuisses except that little bit of flared skirting, so you just have to reach around that to undo your fly (or codpiece), spread your legs a bit, and aim down (rather than the modern habit of aiming forward).
I do wonder it they had butt-flaps on their trousers (similar to some modern-ish winter gear) for taking a dump though.
