VERY underrated indeed. I wish more of the biggest YT film critics would look more into these "gems of the olden days". 1999 was SUCH a great year in cinema, probably the best ever imo. I find this song a mix of adventurous and melancholic. The first 2 times it plays it the movie shows Boyd on a journey to fort Spencers and it really incorporates the adventurous spirit. The final time it plays when Ives and Boyd are both dead it really makes the scene heartbreaking.

Saw this movie at a time when MANY good horror movies came out. But as soon as I heard this song, I knew that I discovered a true gem. 😍 Its setting, tone, subject, the actors, the soundtrack...my goodness! Its truly a one of a kind movie. Its amazing

Something I love about this song is that it very much feels like a fitting theme for Boyd as a character. The ominous pattern that starts of the song is a representation of what Boyd is mostly throughout the movie:uncomfortable, strange and undesirable. Boyd is a coward who only captured the Mexican outpost because he acted like a comllet coward and let his men die to hide in their corpses. The more comfortable music is what his officials make the public see him as: good. It's trying to hide Boyd's true nature as a cowardly bastard, but it can't truly disgusie him for the coward he is. You can still hear that progression in the background; we can still see who Boyd is, no matter how much the higher ups want to hide the truth.
For the record I believe this is a David Albarn track, it's said on the wikipedia that they split the compositions between them, meaning they worked on separate tracks and this one has a lot of the elements of other of his songs as far as instruments and composition.
You might be right: but the arrangement including the Hail Columbia melody and the obsessive, repetitive banjo notes are essentially Nymanesque: I feel inclined this was written by Michael with a tiny contribution by Damon
I love the juxtaposition of the 7 low notes next to the 6 high notes. The high notes represent Boyd imo and the low notes the Wendigo. Boyd is weaker but morally superior. And together, they make the unlucky number *13* !! Symbolism!! 😜 So, that's what that represents in my head
Great movie, It's just a pity that paedo jeffrey jones is in it (The principal from ferris buellers day off) other than that great movie great tunes and very good unhinged psychopath performance from Robert Carlyle yet again (Trainspotting 1 & 2 , The world is not enough, Cracker, Barney Thompson) to name but a few, I went to the same school as RC (at a different time, he's a few years older than me) He probably honed his Psychopathic skills at that school, there was plenty of headcases at it when I was there (yes I'm pretty psycho myself) And I will be first to admit it 😜
I used to walk to my college campus in the snow listening to this. Such a dramatic little thing I was!
