Yeah, when you said Stevie was more pointed and fronted. I imagined myself almost snarling in anger towards someone. If that makes sense? @@TimWelchVocalStudio
funny that you posted this today because her rolling stones cover story just came out today! i recommend giving it a read it teachers so much about her
Love all your Chappell videos and this was no exception! I’m learning so much about how singers use their instrument, it’s fascinating. Can’t wait for your reactions to The Subway and the rest of the Tiny Desk Concert. You should check out the live performance of Kaleidoscope on her channel when you have a chance, it’s really beautiful.
@@emilysue786 I quite enjoy it also, and hope to see it on the 2nd album, or released as a filler single to maintain momentum until the 2nd albums release. Chappell has called 'Subway' "Casuals" cousin on stage so it clearly fits into her modern period work.
To me it's apples and oranges. They're so different that you really can't compare them other than to just point out the differences. If I had to pick I'd pick Chappell. I've seen Stevie Nicks with Fleetwood Mac live in the 1970s and although I enjoyed it I wasn't blown away. Chappell just totally annihilates me in everything she does.
Both made the song their own two different voices two different style. That being said I prefer the OG! Stevie’s voice has been in my head for way too many decades!!
Another good one to do a comparison with would be Bon Iver's Skinny Love (particularly the version from Later with Jools Holland) and Birdy's rendetion. Gives a real look into the technique versus authentic feeling, for me anyway. Another one of interest would be Prince/Sinéad O'Connor/Chris Cornell doing Nothing Compares 2 U.
Chinchilla has also done a Fleetwood Mac cover, The Chain. Not so much a Stevie comparison as much as a Lindsey Buckingham one. Completely different arrangement. I enjoyed the comparison style video. Definitely up for seeing more of these.
@@TimWelchVocalStudioMy favourite cover of The Chain is by The Highwomen - the Country Women SuperGroup. Their harmonies and arrangements are perfection
not going to/can't choose but everything I've heard from chappell roan has been hugely impressive (including old demos) and she REALLY 'gets' this song - so many versions by other artists are just straight covers. chappell continues to impress
Getting a kind of Fiona Apple ish sound . And I love me some Fiona . Two very different performances. I suppose which I would prefer would be dictated my my mood . Thank you so much for introducing me to an artist , who for me is new ❤ I really enjoyed this .
I think the aspect of phrasing that you pointed out- to not interrupt certain lines and follow them through to get the message across - was so interesting! I do think Chappell has already improved over the years in that aspect. She definitely has a more refined sense of storytelling now with her own songs. Stevie definitely has the more striking and resonant storytelling delivery here for her song.
For me its interesting, because only on these older videos do we see Chappell playing piano (admittedly below frame). In newer stuff, we see her decision to move around on stage a lot rather than nail herself to one spot at a piano.
Chappell has a beautiful voice but this is Stevie's song and always will be. Chappell did amazing but she's no Stevie, she's her own thing. And that's how it should be. Each women beautiful in their own right.
Stevie does sing that lower part on the album. She actually did a second vocal take of the higher harmony on the album, and Christine and Lindsey did separate harmonies as well. I really like this version Chappell did.
I'm no expert by any means, but I'd gather that all of Chappell's breath catches mid-phrase are intentional. We know she has the control to do whatever she wants, so it seems more like a stylistic choice, even if at times, it would likely still sound better to stay continuous on some phrases,
Love the analysis and breakdowns. I would be very interested in a video about Geoff Castelucci. His cover of House of the Rising Sun drops my jaw every time. Your videos are wonderfully informative.
Fantastic, that was so cool. Would love to hear more of this kind of thing comparing our girl's cover of great songs and performances by other singer-songwriters. It's bigger, not as melodious, not a pure "singer's song," not so much a song for teaching frok, but maybe consider a breakdown of Chappell and Alanis each doing You Oughta Know, for example? Chappell's covered it in live shows. IIRC there might also be a Chappell cover of Can't Help Falling In Love?
I really love them both, but Chappell's voice just blows me away. It's so sultry and she has so much range. I'm not well educated in singing and how it all works, but there's something about her voice that just gets to me!
We can also easily see in Chappell's soft, melancholy cover of Dreams why Atlantic Records was thrown when she decided she wanted to go in an entirely different stylistic direction starting with Pink Pony Club. A normal reaction by most music producers would be, Are you sure? Because, look: You do THIS so well! She got stay-in-your-land pushback from them and wouldn't release PPC for over a year. Atlantic just didn't "get" that they had the artist of a generation on their roster.
I'm a noob as far as vocal technique and also recording goes - I wondered about your comment that current artists in general have more tone quality diversity - do you think it has anything to do with changes (and possibly improvements in) recording equipment that can better capture that diversity within a single piece? Enjoyed this video & look forward to the next!
Yes, I do think it has to do with recording and people having access to high-quality microphones at earlier stages of their artistic development. A high-quality microphone gives you permission to make sounds you normally wouldn’t make if you didn’t have one. USB microphones are incredibly high-quality and you can record directly into your computer with them. So, a lot of these softer sounds are becoming so much more popular because people are able to study them more.
I grew up listening to Stevie but honestly never LOVED her voice. I love the new direction a lot of modern women singers went in, i love the darker softer tones.
First time I've listened to her. Gorgeous voice but Roan seems to lack the...appropriate heart in this? There is feeling there, but it seems to be mismatched with the tune. The yelps (sorry, forgot the correct word) I'm not a fan of here, yet I love when Chinchilla does something similar. Gonna have to watch more of your videos of her to check.
There’s definitely a different level of maturity than Stevie Nicks singing of it as she has more life experience than Chappell does here. I agree, it’s definitely a different emotional space than the original.
Stevie Nicks is ok but for me she was much more entertaining with this than Chappell Roan Chappell might be technically proficient but doesn't tell a story in song, rather bland to my ears.
Stevie seems to be be threatening the sadness at her partner. Chappell seems to be feeling the sadness herself. Stevie was pissed, Chappell is sad.
Beautiful, I love that interpretation
Well said

Awesome I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Stevie has the emotional depth and rawness that fits the song so perfectly. It shouldn’t be gently somehow it is a storm not a breeze :)
