    Would a band cut on the bias work better?

    • @ladyjane3660
      @ladyjane3660 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly what I came here to suggest as you will get a little more stretch to cover the wider circumference of the egg. It would make sense to keep the band as narrow as possible.

      Jane Vt.
      I too have extreme arthritis, but it is osteoarthritis which I think is a slower progression than some, and it does not warp you as quickly as some of the other arthritis. It has it's down side, which in my case is I have it in almost all of my joints. The exception is my fingers - which are still functional. Until I saw your message, I was feeling sorry for myself because I have a lot of pain - everywhere - and can no longer take NSAIDs - a type of medicine which helps my type of arthritis. The other cost is that my range of motion has significantly been lessened by bone spurs in the joint - the body's defense to constant bone on bone grinding. I tell you all this to explain why and how important your post was to me. I know when you say you can't use your hands like this anymore, there is a lot more to the story. But I think that was my fear - that I could not craft or paint anymore. Learning to live with the pain was fine so long as I could still function. Of course over the years as the bone spurs grew - my range of motion went - and I didn't even know it. I had been compensating all the time - so when he pointed out what I couldn't do - I realized I still could do what was most important to me. I am hoping that when you think about your disease and how it has progressed, you will realize the same thing. That as you couldn't do some things, you pushed harder to be able to keep something important to you. I know this does not happen for all people. I am lucky and know it. I was diagnosed at 18 with it in my entire spine and shoulders, and I feel I can still bend well for a 68 year old woman. Yes, some of my spine is fused (with bone spurs), but I can bend over and pick up a penny. I have fought for that. Please tell me if you have something important you have been able to hold on to? You are so sweet in your message, it broke my heart. Was there something you can say - I still can get on my horse? or I drive in a carriage now? I'm just so upset that no one told me back at 18 that I would have to make choices - and pushing hard to keep some things, or not doing it because of the pain was a choice. But who tells you that you have to make that same choice every day for the rest of your life? Or lose it?

    'working on my first ornament. I should finish it tomorrow if I have the embellishments I want to use! I couldn't press those pins in with my bare fingers or thumb; I used the end of a fine point Sharpie CAP! Worked fine, but a thimble might be better. I bought a fat quarter pack from Wal-Mart for less than $6.00. I think I will be able to get 2 eggs from this! My first one won't be as pretty as yours, but I think it's looking pretty good! Thanks SO much to you 'Ornament Girl'. Your story is heart-warming! I am so happy for your success with all of your hard work and sacrifices. Yours is an American Dream story for sure! It's so nice to hear that you have been able to hire others to work while growing your business! Keep up the good work! I wish you much happiness and continued success.
    An afterthought.. These ornaments, depending on the fabrics used, are great decor for anytime of year. I plan to get ornament display hangers (or DIY them) to display them on a shelf or table! (Would also be great gifts for friends using Sports logo fabrics; gaming characters; cartoon figures; or photos on fabric for the snow globe eggs. Well, my minds running away....

    Decades ago I was choosing fabrics for two small dolls - and that process took me about 2.5 hours! I loved all the fabrics even though I was very not used to mixing plaids with prints and stripes ... but the combo of all of those was fab! The bottom line - it is now 50 years later and those dolls were never made. They were called 'Friends'. Now I love your tutorial and used to collect eggs of all kinds - but am gun-shy about buying all sort of fabrics. LOL
    I love the colors you chose ... but if I made this for gifts, I would be crippled trying to figure out if the recipients would like the colors. My daughter refused a crocheted afghan I made for her because "those colors are not what I want" - so I made her choose the colors, made her a new afghan and she never bothered to take a picture of it on her bed.
    I love watching and learning from you. The rest is up to me - for sure. Thank you!!! I'm in my 83rd year of learning and liking lots of stuff.

    I used to make Christmas ornaments similar to this years ago and figured out that you can remove the 'under pins' once they are covered up by the next row and it saves pis. I never had any of mine fall apart doing this. I might try my hand at the eggs shaped ones soon TFS!

    I truly love these! But please provide a warning in your videos to pet owners. Because they are full of pins, they need to keep locked away from a frisky puppy that may wish to chew and play with them. :( I was making them for my daughters and it just suddenly struck me that I have five grand-puppies and a grand-kitty who could be seriously injured, or worse.

      Hi Elisabeth.. thank you for the compliment. The egg I used was 4" tall, but you can really use just about any size, and just adjust the number of layers as needed. I've got my own custom foam eggs here (with the pre-drawn lines): theornamentgirl.com/market/product/8-lined-4-inch-soft-foam-egg/ - but you can also get your own eggs from anywhere you like, and draw your own lines. I talked about that a little bit in the video and there's a link right under the video to another video teaching how to draw your own lines. I hope that helps. :)

    • @TheOrnamentGirl
      @TheOrnamentGirl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joan... this egg is a little heavier than some of the other ornament patterns we've got on the channel, but it's not too bad. I have heard of people using glue before but I'm honestly not sure how that would work out. The pins make things so stable and help you keep your points nice and sharp. (Also, I'm just not that great with glue, but that could just be me lol).

      Hi Tammy... it really depends on how much smaller you're going (if it's only a tiny difference in size, you'll probably need close to the same size fabric pieces). If you're going a lot smaller, you can try sizing down 1/2" or so for every 1" smaller egg you're using. (It can take a little experimenting sometimes).

  • @lorilivingston6342
    @lorilivingston6342 ปีที่แล้ว

    If your finger gets sore from pushing in the pins, they make different kinds of thimbles. I like the one that goes on like a ring and covers just the part of your finger you push with.
    Since I make mistakes I learned that a button shank trimmer will slip right under the fabric and it lifts the pin inside without breaking your nails or tearing the fabric.

  • @debrapolenz2928

    I have made things doing folded star Technique however we use circles for ours. You save a lot of fabric that way and also you can iron all the triangles before hand in place. And we just met the center seam we didn’t overlap the seam. You fold it your circle in half and then iron it, then fold in half again so it’s a center fold in the half circle then you folded your corners down to the center seam And iron it again and you can make 1 million of them at one time and then just put them on your project they are pre-folded basically so it makes putting it together very easy

      Hi Debbie... thank you! I love these colors too. I would have them available if I could, but I’m anxiously awaking their next similar line. (It’s rue1800 by Moda - you might be able to find some in a search)

      Yes, but you'll need to manipulate it a bit to hide your pins.

    I did the quilted balls many years ago. Thought about doing them again at Christmas time. I'm thrilled to see the eggs.i was so enchanted with them im not sure I breathed the whole time you were doing it. I'm going to be ordering some of the eggs from you. I think doing the first couple might be easier with the marked eggs. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of these. I do remember the sore fingers. Felt kind of like you caught them in a meat grinder.lol

    Many years ago my older sister made me one of these eggs. It's really pretty and I love it. I thought that there was no way that I could do this, but you have made it look so easy.
    Mine is all turquoise and creams. Your color scheme on this one is beautiful. I love it !!
