Aussie Rules itself was created in the 1850s, but the current national competition traces it's origins back to the creation of the Victorian Football League in the 1890s. There were earlier leagues in Victoria and all across the country in the other colonies (which later became the States when we federated in 1901), and there are various amateur and professional leagues at State level still. But the AFL is the top tier national competition.

It should be pointed out of course that not all the teams joined the league with the nicknames mentioned here. The Essendon Bombers, for example, obviously weren't called the Bombers in 1897, they didn't get that name until WW2.

When a recent arrival to heaven asked St Peter what the walled off section he saw was, St Peter replied
"Oh that's the Catholics, they like to think they're the only one's here".
    There you have the Victorians.
True, a large state that dominates the sport, you would never have the slightest idea that the other states had equally strong traditions and followers and history of the sport that have contributed to the success of the national competition.
It's so excessively skewed to the Victorians they could never stand being challenged by the smaller states at a game of footy during the course of the history of the game in this country prior to the AFL.
