    Seeds is the cheapest and the best way. You can easily triple your colección in no time if you pollinate manually. With that method you can even grow your collection with hybrids that only you have.

    Another awesome and informative video, Ana 😊 Removing offsets is definitely one of the fastest ways, some of them produce pups very quickly and grow from the mother plant pretty quickly as well. Good to see the golden barrel you hot-nailed is doing well, I’d leave that as clump, too 😊 Thank you for sharing with us as always. Have a wonderful day and weekend from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌺🌸🏜☕️

  • @emmitstewart1921
    @emmitstewart1921 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another version of growing from cuttings is to order cuttings online or if a friend gifts you cuttings (or Pups) from his/her plants. This is an excellent way of getting varieties or species that you didn't have before. A nice thing about getting cuttings through the mail is that while they have been going through the mail, the cut ends have been heeling, so you can place them in soil as soon as they arrive.
    Seeds is also a good way of getting new plants, but remember that cacti and most succulents are very slow growing, so you have to be ready to wait several years for your plants to mature. It just so happens that I had sterilized several pots of soil for planting some seeds today. I ordered Ferocactus chrysacanthus, Gymnocalycium horridispinum, and Echinocereus dasyacanthus. I am also planting Some old seeds of Dianthus gratianopolis (cheddar pinks). I had them in my outdoor garden many years ago, and I'd like to know if they will grow and bloom under lights indoors.
    Thank the lord for the internet. Back when I started growing cacti from seeds in the seventies, you could buy mixtures of seeds from catalogs and there was a place in England that had seeds of separate species for sale. Now, with a little searching, you can find almost anything with one caveat. Sometimes you order something and you end up with anything. several years ago, I ordered a packet of Browningia hertlingeana, Which grew well, but wasn't Browningia, so now I have a couple beautiful columnar cacti with with golden spines and hair that I have no idea of what they are.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is funny about the seeds turning out to be something else. 😄 But I’m sure it happens a lot now as cactus and succulents are gaining popularity worldwide. That is awesome that you started sowing seeds in the 70’s! And the passion is still with you up to now. Your collection must be spectacular. 😃🌵🌵🌵🎖🏅👍🏼

      @emmitstewart1921 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CactusCaffeine Sadly, no. There have been several occasions when I was forced to move into efficiency apartments and had to give all my plants away and start over with only one or two. I don't mind because those I gave away made a lot of people happy. Also, I have limited space, so I only keep one or two of those I grow when they reach the two inch pot size. The rest I give away.

    The information on the internet about watering cacti and succulents on a schedule is completely wrong. It is true that in the autumn and winter these plants go dormant so it is a good idea not to water them. However in the spring and summer the recommendation of watering them once a month or once every 6 weeks can chill these plants from overwatering. It has definitely happened to me. Especially the fuzzier cacti

      I know. The last ones are unconventional. I haven’t had the nerve to do it all by myself either. 😳 But I’ve seen many growers in California doing it lately because multi-headed ones sell at a greater price. Also a faster way have more pups to sell. The industry is evolving, I guess. 🙂
