- 400hp and 480nm: numbers which 15 years ago would've been impressive for a supercar. In 2018, they're the figures for a five door hatchback. The Audi RS 3 isn't just any old hatchback though - a 2.5-litre five cylinder turbo is matched to a Quattro all-wheel drive system for speed across a twisty road that even the latest supercars would struggle to match.
The Mercedes-AMG A45 has similarly bonkers numbers and is the current hyper hatch king. So can the latest RS 3 compete? I compare the two to find out.

they don't test it on ideal circumstances so that when the circumstances aren't ideal you still get the official figure or a better time
How the power to weight ration is around 175 and the a45s is 190 and it's 3.9 to 100 its fake

RS3 is in a different class. Visually both inside and out it's such a better looking car then the merc. Audi have raised the bar with their virtual cockpit display too.

I went in an RS3 recently and it was incredibly fast! Expensive car but I was seriously impressed.
If you can only have/afford/want one car, let be realistic, the RS3 is the one. Do you think you would take that Mercedes to a funeral with that rear wing? What do you think non-car people/colleagues might think, probably that your a bit childish with those spoilers. The RS3 is such an awesome car, fast, practical, looks awesome, sound is amazing, no problem if you want to do long distances, safe.. It's pretty close to perfect.
Rogier There's no spoiler on the regular A45. Well, no bigger than on the RS3, anyways.
Rogier The spoiler, the front canards, and the lip spoiler in the front are part of the AMG Aero Package.
Did not know the rear wing on the Merc is an 'aero package' option, my apologies, but I think it looks horrible. Other than that I do like the car (and colour), but I still prefer the Audi.
Rogier if you want to join a funeral with that Mercedes you have to choose it in black colour 😎.

And to think 15 years ago only supercars went from 0-60 in 4 seconds, not practical German hatchbacks. It's madness really.
This car looks so humble but in actuality it's a beast. Love it.
The RS3 is one of my favourite cars. The A45 AMG is still a brilliant bit of kit.

The New Audi RS3 is the best hot hatch ever. Mind-blowing performance, great driving comfort, loads of kit and options to choose from. Whats not to like?

@@realtalk7571 Chill dude. The price is high but appropriate, how many cars are out there with a starting price of 55.000$ that do 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and run 10s in the ¼ mile? Usually you'd have to pay 20-30k more to get this kind of figures, plus the RS3 is also outstanding for every day use.

The scary part is, map only will have them in the low 3's to 60 and low 11's in the 1/4, right up there with some VERY fast cars. All in a practical all weather hatchback, insanity.

well not really, not a mapped one. they will be even until well over 100mph. Which in the real world is all you ever need for your daily driving hatchback

I'm a Mercedes guy but in this segment I'd take the Audi, it looks better because of that hideous spoiler on the A45 and I like the interior of the RS3 more

Spoiler can be taken off. And even with it, the A45 looks better than the ugly Audi

Testing it on a track, where 99.999% of owners will never take any car ever.
That's actually not true. Id estimate 20% of the RS3 owners in our club use them regularly for motorsports of som kind. Myself I like Hill climbs, drags and sprints, but people use them for all sorts of things.
Now the pre FL car does have some tip in understeer at the limits which makes it less chuckable, but it still has excellent traction with a great engine with tons of torque ,the 7spd gearbox is also tough and fast.
Its great audi have made the new one fun to drive as well as extremely fast.
The only thing they need to do now is give the OEM tires a change, the Pzero's are OK, but really are not a track tire. Some PSS as standard with cup2's as options or similar would be better overall.
With CUP'2 it would be as fast as a cayman S around a track for sure
Right. Both your stats are wrong, and your premise is wrong. The RS3 is a performance machine and most of the testing he's doing CAN'T be done on the road. The guy's trying to help both friends and foes get some info; he's not trying to get arrested for doing corners over the speed limit or going slightly sideways on public roads.

How did you find the downshifts in automatic mode on the RS3? I recently test drove one, and I didn't have time to play with the settings, so maybe there's something in there to speed it up, but when I floored the gas, it felt like the car took foreeever to respond. I did have drive select in dynamic. Maybe I'm just too used to a manual now, and I've forgotten what automatic feels like, but I don't think so.

In Norway the S3 starts at 620 000 NOK, which is the same as 60 000 GBP. So to get a fullspec RS3 at 65 000 GBP is a steal... So I guess in Norway it wil start around 850 000 NOK (85 000 GBP)

£60k is a lot. And I think 400hp is unusable in the UK - at least around London. But that exhaust and the V5 sounds unbelievable. Like a mini R8!

So £60k is a lot for a hatchback but think about how much car you are getting. I've always rated the RS3 more than the other because it's the best all rounder. You would literally keep up with anything in the real world on British roads, the Quattro gets the power down better than the others. 3.7secs 0-60 is crazy!! And you can still take the kids to school in comfort, do you're weekly shop and smoke anything on you're way home. It's the ultimate daily weapon and my dad has booked a test drive in 2 weeks, wonder what he thinks? Great review!!

Considering these two lovely cars the problem in some countries could be additional / bigger tax regarding engine size (like in Poland for engines 2.0 and bigger). So if you check starting prices - the RS3 is 14 750 GBP more expensive than A45. Then I think its no brainier.
The Merc A45 has nothing on this, the new RS3 makes it look like a hot hatch from 2009 or something. The engine alone makes it more worthwhile than that boring 4 cylinder in the Merc.

I’ve driven a few very fast Audi’s. Yes they were quick in a straight line but felt clinical, numb and detached. Honestly once you’ve driven fast M cars Audi’s do feel dull. I own an Audi Q5 3.0 Quattro so I’m not hating on the brand!
