SHOP TALK! How to grow a third arm and reinstall the springdrum on an Erika Model M

Just a quick vid for anyone dealing w an Erika springdrum, because the worst part about taking one of these off is PUTTING IT BACK ON!!! This basic technique works for a wide variety of headache-inducing tasks, typewriter related or otherwise :)

Please tell me more. I have an Erika 5tab & my drawband came loose. No it looks like there is no tension anymore in the spring drum. Would die for some help here.

looks can be deceiving. when the drawband separated, the spring likely recoiled and came loose from the catch on the hub at the center of the springdrum(though it’s technically possible the spring itself snapped at the same time, it’s highly unlikely)
the first step is to see if you can get the spring to seat on the hub without disassembly. slide the carriage all the way over to allow access to the springdrum, then spin the drum toward the carriage(opposite the direction it needs to pull) which is to say, when viewed from the rear of the machine, the drum should be wound counterclockwise. you will likely hear the spring shuffle around & click inside the drum, and hopefully within a few revolutions it will catch. if that doesn’t work, spin it the opposite direction a few times, then try again.
