  • Ever wanted to get into contemporary music, but not sure how? Here is my guide to contemporary techniques on the recorder! Many modern compositions use so-called 'extended techniques' and here I give a full introduction to them - how to play, perform and read a bunch of the most common ones!
    Including: fluttertongue, multiphonics, sputato, singing and playing, whistle tones, percussive effects, finger/tongue vibrato, extreme trills, air sounds, white noise, glissando, looooong notes and more.

    Interesting how the recorder skipped the whole Classical and Romantic periods only to be adopted by contemporary composers and early music enthusiasts. We don't see this mix of ancient and modern with too many instruments. (Nor with many instrumentalists!)

    Thanks to your videos, the old misconception I had about a recorder being a simple, monophonic instrument has been totally blown out of the water. You've shown me that it's a much more versatile and nuanced instrument than my music teacher would have had me believe.

    Great video - as usual! BTW: I always use “glissando” “longing notes” and “full finger vibrato” when I play such tunes as George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” on my Bb clarinet. They also come in handy on my alto recorder. 😉

    I have seen traditional whistle players speak extensively about vibrato. Many believe that the only legit form of vibrato comes from developing a form of flattement. They tend to discourage or condemn vibrato coming from the diaphragm. Which I find I bit odd seeing how certain notes do not present an opportunity for vibrato with flattement. Any way, you can look up some whistle players if you want to see musicians who really use the technique regularly. I would suggest Brian Finnegan of Flook for starters. Great video Sarah!

    Thank you so much for this Sarah, I’m a composer at GSMD writing an opera right now for my MA and I chose to have two recorders in the ensemble and your video has been so transformative/life saving - the music’s so much more alive now!! Ps love your channel - I bought some recorders to test out sounds for the orchestration and you’ve inspired me to carry it on even after the opera 😁

    • @Team_Recorder
      @Team_Recorder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh that’s amazing! So happy to hear there’s recorders in the opera- let me know if there’s a recording I can hear? 😊 The main tricky thing is notation and clefs/octaves as each size of recorder has different conventions. Can’t wait to hear your work!

    • @michaelbascom
      @michaelbascom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Team_Recorder yeah, I’ve been discovering by lots of trial and error that what’s on the page isn’t exactly how it sounds... 😂 and I will absolutely send you a link once it’s been performed - hey, if you’re in London in July and if we’re allowed an audience - covid allowing - I could even try and swing you a ticket if you’d want! The opera’s all about phones and how we present ourselves differently in person & through technology, so the recorders play a vital function bridging those two soundworlds. Thanks again, love your videos ☺️ x

      VERY GOOD QUESTION and I'm going to tackle this in a Q&A very soon! But in the meantime - concentrate on the music of it. You are making those sounds for a reason, and find the beauty (or the ugliness, depending on context!) in them :)

    I LOVE your videos. Your delivery is captivating. I have an enquiry. One of my students is doing Marcussen's 'Bekkeblom' on tenor recorder for an exam in a couple of weeks' time. There are slanted up and down arrows above notes in bar 2 (and various other notes in the piece) that we're not sure how to interpret. Can you suggest a solution please? Thanks. Adrienne

    • @Team_Recorder
      @Team_Recorder  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adrienne, thanks for your compliments! Hmm, I don't know that piece but I see it's on the Trinity exam syllabus. Is there not a key that explains the technique? I\m not exact;y sure. As it's an exam piece I find it strange that the edition wouldn't explain it....

    Thank you so much, Sarah - I've been wanting to know about these techniques for ages - bought Music for a Bird after it was on YMOTY in 2012 - but no idea what so many of the notations mean!
    Talking of notation, I just bought The Bird Fancyer's Delight for my student who has fallen in love with her sopranino, and some of the notes have an equals sign over them. Is that a trill or a repeated note or what?
    I'm feeling like the luckiest person on earth because I've just saved up enough to buy a Helder Treble. Oh my goodness it is gorgeous, especially at the bottom - and higher up as well. Do I really need to limit my playing to ten minutes per day when it has a Synpor block? I just want to play it all day, but there doesn't seem to be much advice about it online. How do I balance the recorder on my thumb and lower lip when it's own weight causes the lip control to spring into action? And is there an easy way to get the piano key on while still retaining freedom of movement in the left hand? I used to play the oboe so I am used to having an octave key there but I don't remember that being so crippling on hand position! And if you know of any user forums for it, I'd love to know about them because I feel as though I'm floundering about in the dark at the moment and I would hate to damage my instrument through ignorance…

    • @sleepydrJ
      @sleepydrJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tom Arrow Pete Rose:Bass burner; and I'd rather be in Philadelphia for solos or tall P for ensemble. Gus Haverkate: various jazz arrangements for solo or ensemble Jaxzin' 1 and jazzin' 4. I love return of the pink panther in Jazzin 1. Van der Roost: I continenti for four recorders (listen to Flanders recordings- very weird and some more tuneful than others, but exactly what this video is about. South America is easiest. Paul Leenhouts' arrangement of return if the pink panther for 4 is awesome! Finally- Otfried Busing has some very edgy solos. One for garklein and a set of solos for different recorders: "animal society" . For just pretty and modern but not extended techniques look at Pieter Campo and Soren Sieg.

    Unfortunately, there is no key to the terms .... and we can't find any recordings. At least it provides an opportunity for our imaginations to go wild. We chose the piece because we like the tenor sound. The price you pay .......

    • @Team_Recorder
      @Team_Recorder  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In that case, do let your imagination run wild! :D You don't to worry about what the examiner thinks in that case :) Interpret it in a way that fits your idea of the 'story' of the piece - it could be little glissandos or pitch bends up or down...
