    i wish you lived here in northen Sweden then i would go to your classes all the time, Most kids in my age (14)don't care about woodcraft or slöjd and after watching your videos i starated to ask my elders about their life and how they lived and every one was relient on knowledge about nature and huntig, fishing, sloyd, and so on. My grandpa was educated to be a slöjd lärare(sloyd teacher) so he has been teaching me how to make all sorts of bushcraft things. but he became a selfreliant farmer insted of a sloyd teacher and thats the way i want to live thanks to you. Marry christmas Dave your my biggest idol

    I always enjoy these kit type videos. Always getting new ideas. My quad broke down one night a few years ago on the trap line. It was in the teens and only had to walk about a mile but a kit like this would be a lifesaver if a person was a good ways from help. Thanks Dave for the great videos

    For any Aussie subscribers now is a good time to hit the stores like the salvos and ST Vinnies for wool blankets. As long as you don't mind some colourful ones lol. The most I've paid is $10 for thick queen size 100% Aussie wool. Hope this helps anyone.

    Awesome video, it was very helpfull and especially using the canvas tarp. I dislike tents ever since I was in the Corps. I don't like not being able to see what's coming. The way you have that set up is perfect for me. Keep up the good work

    That rig gives me an idea...
    Make a pack harness out of 1" nylon webbing so that you can insert that roll "in" it as a cradle and have 2 adjustable shoulder straps with Fastex field expedient buckles or actual metal belt buckles. The girth of the basket-like weave could also be adjustable for alternative uses when not carrying the roll (firewood hauling, packing out a quartered deer, 5 gallon bucket, trappers basket, etc...). It probably wouldn't weight but a couple of ounces and should be able to easily handle up to 50#.

    Awesome video! Very good for everyone that goes off road. I'm planning on getting my hand on a rokon in the next year they look like awesome bike. You have nimbleness of a dirt bike but the power of an ATV. I do a lot of camping on my off time with my puppy and she's kinda scare of the quad so I thought this might be a nice alternative with the side car. Cheers!

    You know what I can't seem to find, is how to build a down and dirt shelter that includes a cover for fire so when it's nasty out there would still be a fire to eat with and stay warm. That's what I want to see.

    Do you ever get something like that tarp and then put a good linseed oil coat on it just to give it some extra waterproofing? Merry Christmas to you and the family.

  • @clay-r15

    Hey Dave do you still have the Rokon and if so how's it holding up? Got a chance to get a 1998 rokon ranger and a old m1 garand rifle off a neighbor for a bike I have that's worth about $4000 and don't know if I should. If I get the rokon I could definitely see it being used for deer hunting and possibly even dragging deer out from areas I can't get to with my quad.

I am a very passionate bushcrafter and have worked with schools here in the UK so i would not be a complete novice. Dave another great video ! Really appreciate all the knowledge that you continue to share. My question is and I know I've seen it inn one of your previous videos , but the interval markings on your axe for measuring correct ? Also now that I'm saying this I need to do a review on your store website .I went on a three day weekend mountain backpacking trip this weekend in the Sacramento mountain range in Blizzard conditions , snow , wind and mid teens temperature with the green space blanket and HD ferro rod that could start a 2x4 on fire, both items and too many more to list items from your store performed excellent ! thanks for the info and product's at Self-reliance !

    • @BamaBoat
      @BamaBoat 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Simpson the markings are mostly for felling trees. You hold the axe up and sight the tree to figure out how far it will fall. At least that's the way I understand it. Cb75

    Dave quick question? I've bought a few mora knives and filed the spine to a 90° edge but I'm having a problem with my sparks sticking to my blade rather than flying off the Ferro rod into my bird nest. I don't know why its doing it and I don't have this problem with my other knives. Have I done something wrong? Have you came accros this before? If so how do I fix it? I know it's completely off topic but some advice would be great! Love you're videos. Learn something new every day.

    • @CHEEZYCAB
      @CHEEZYCAB 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just put a magnet to my ferro rod and it is slightly magnetic, perhaps when grinding the spine you magnetized the knife. Maybe a quick youtube search on demagnetizing will help.

    mr Canterbury i got a vid request for you. this is offsubject here but its on braintanning. ive had several long online debates about it recently an hope u can clear something up for me. i read an article years ago that i cant remember where i saw it, but it was supposed to be a trapper who tanned his own hides for a living who claimed you could " braintan" a hide without the use of brains. i tried it myself when i was about 14 or 15 years old and it worked to perfection exactly as the guy said. he said brains dont contain tannins or anything that permantly changes the state of the hide it being just a good high grade oil basically, and that since it doesnt hafta go through the process of denaturing the protein in the hide into leather, you didnt need to let it sit on there for hours or days, but could just a good oil and work it in well in the breaking process. i used kiwi brand mink oil on one rabbit hide, and rabbit brains on the other. let the brains sit on over a couple days, but oiled up and broke the other hide right away working more oil into the harder spots. days later after i finished off the one with the brains, they looked identical. when i rewet them, they both redried stiff as im sure you can imagine. i smoked them after that to actually waterproof them, and it worked like its supposed to. no one will belive me when i say it can be done, and have neither a camera, nor the patience to learn to use one, to prove this to other people when i already know in my heart myself that it works. somebody has clear up the mystery of braintanning, and you do great vids. i dont think anyone could do it better. this has sparked more interest and debate among people that say they braintan regularly than i wouldve imagined, and i think a lot of people will find it interesting.

    • @mizzfriedfroggie
      @mizzfriedfroggie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      people are claiming there brains do something magical and that smoke isnt really necessary. i know its common to keep hides unsmoked if you want it white, but you dont let it get wet. people just cant believe that brains along dont permanently tan leather.

  • @mizzfriedfroggie
    @mizzfriedfroggie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    i was taught by native people to do it exactly as you do. but i happened to pick up this random tip from a random person, and im being accused of trying to rewrite history. why would traditional people add in another long wait process after enduring an already long drying process if they didnt have to? it only makes since to me that as he said, it was picked up and added in from bark or veg tanning at a later time. im trying to help people and not insult them, and the disbelief just doesnt end. the guy who wrote the article warned of telling anyone of this, and ive found out why. lol

    Dave, I have been watching your videos for a good while and will continue for 2 reasons: 1 for entertainment 2. for some good tips.
    However, I can't see anything on this video that is a reality on your property. If you were in a national forest out west in the open area of CO or Alaska maybe , but Ohio, on your own property?
    Often times it the ideas are great but almost as pretend as the dudes that do the medieval reenactment.

      Well here is the thing, my 186 acres backs up to a 4000 acres of wildlife area, and whether I am 2 min or 2 miles from my homestead the landscape looks the same so why travel 2 miles for a simple video like this, I have done many in the trapping series etc that were quite a ways away, but I don't really see a shelter being set up any different no matter where in this 4000+ acres it would be?

    • @DavidCanterbury
      @DavidCanterbury  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      On top of which, this is my School and where I teach so it makes sense to do it here as well?, Why travel 2000 miles for a 6 min video?
