- Luke:
Scripture Reading: Luke 1:1-4 "Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed."
Purpose:
To present an accurate account that Jesus was the perfect human and Savior.
Audience:
Theophilus.
Introduction:
One outstanding aspect about the book of Luke is that it was an historic account written to Theophilus. Luke dedicated significant time to researching and writing to ensure that one person could be established in the truth of the gospel.
Main Points:
1. One Soul Matters to God
Scripture Reference: Luke 15:10 "Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
Luke teaches us something profound: In the kingdom of God, one soul knowing and growing in Christ matters immensely to God. This is why Luke could dedicate so much effort to writing to Theophilus. He knew the value of one soul.
2. Serve God Wholeheartedly
Scripture Reference: Colossians 3:23 "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men."
Luke's dedication reminds us to take our work for God seriously, no matter how small it may seem. Whether in our jobs, ministries, or daily tasks, we are to do everything with all our heart as if serving the Lord directly.
3. Redefining Success in God's Kingdom
Godly impact, success, and wealth do not always look glamorous or predictable. In the kingdom of God, success is not always measured in quantity or public recognition.
When we get saved, we often bring with us pre-established views of success, wealth, and achievement. However, these views often contradict God’s perspective. Luke didn’t set out to be known or to become a best-selling author. He wrote dedicating his efforts to Theophilus, and yet his work has been read by millions and changed countless lives.
Our Challenge:
In the kingdom of God, we don’t chase success or promotion. Instead, we focus on doing our part to the best of our abilities.
Scripture Reference: Ephesians 6:6-8 "not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free."
We do not select whom we must serve or seek positions and accolades. We focus on our contributions and using whatever we have been given to serve God by serving others.
Luke was skilled, educated, and a doctor-these could have been sources of pride and arrogance. Instead, he submitted his skills to serve God.
Conclusion:
God sees and has the power to multiply the audience of one to infinity. He can take the work you do in private and bring it to light. In the kingdom of God, true success is found in faithfulness to our calling and dedication to serving others for God's glory.
Let us remember to measure our success by God's standards, not the world's, and commit to serving Him wholeheartedly, knowing that our labor in the Lord is never in vain.
