Definitely not a novelty. Both blades are made from Damasteel (powder formed RWL34 and PMC27, proprietary performance damascus blend made by the Damasteel company.) and are absolutely ground for cutting. The frame is solid titanium and zirconium timascus. Looks pretty, but is 100% functional.

My thoughts exactly. The handle is symmetrical too, so you can't even make the argument that it's for right or left handed use. Unless you're opening two boxes at a time that are stacked on their side very close to each other, I can't think of any practical use for a tool like that...
