I just got back into biking after a 25+ years hiatus. Got a MTB last week. Realized I needed a hybrid for the local paved trails. Just ordered the FX3. Can’t wait.
this is realistic situation for a lot of people- whether to get a dedicated town bike or just use the mountain bike. In the Eastern U.S good places to ride offroad are few and far between so it is important to get the best value out of your bike.
FX3 disc !! made my mind up now seen your video, since I will be doing mainly roads and possible river/canal paths don't really need a MTB and those nobbly tyres.. thanks for doing the hill twice LOL
I’m currently on a Marlin 6. I’m wondering if I can change my front ring to a 40T? And put gravel tires on it? What’s nice is that the new FX3 has a 1x drivetrain which eliminates all of the gear shifting for a 5-10 second climb.
I have a 820 and want to upgrade to the Marlin 6 but I mainly go urban riding but like the bigger tires for holes. what do you think? better feel than the 820 for urban riding
I live in area where bad asphalt is rampant and I also ride on gravel roads. I am thinking of buying a Trek FX3 2022, but due to my needs, change the stock 32mm tires to 42mm or wider if I can. is this possible to do? I am not going to use fenders with this bike. What is the widest tire I can use? Ideally, I wanted to use a 42mm at the back and 45mm in front. Thank you
You had that at 52 pounds not 57, just in case you remember 57 and try that next time and wonder why the wheels are so hard :). It's like the difference between a Jeep and a road car, the Jeep is slower and louder, not as efficient and has a lot of components built into it that make it work well off road but not necessarily great on the road. Still awesome, of course. Different tools for different applications!
Edmonda is a great road bike. Like you had mentioned, climbs great and handling is super. I have a 2015 SL8 with full Dura Ace. FX series is a good hybrid bike but different focus of riding vs a Marlin.
Nice video man. I do mostly road/trail riding, but do some gravel, light roads, and some light off roading. I want versatility and to be able to go faster then my cheap heavy Walmart mountain bike. I would like the most reliable and versatile bike I can get. Do you think I should get a trek dual sport 3, marlin 7 or giant talon 1?
I would definitely go with the marlin 7 or giant talon. You’ll love the marlin. I haven’t ridden a talon but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it
@@fordmustang5763 под ваш стиль езды лучше всего подходит Dual sport 3, он будет быстрее марлина. У Dual sport 3 будет лучше комплектующие, он немного легче, обод под бескамерные покрышки 😃
@@TomerBenDavid I went with the trek marlin 7. The bike is an absolute beast at everything I throw at it. It does great on hills, gravel and the road. Sometimes I wish it had a little more top end speed, but it’s wayyyyy faster than my old bike. Honestly, I think if it was any faster that it might become dangerous lol. I love my bike so much that my mom got herself a marlin 5 and loves it too. If you’re considering the bike, definitely go for it. I’m so glad I went with the marlin over the dual sport. I think I might have been disappointed with the dualsport not being able to handle more “off-road” tasks as well.
I have a Specialized Roubaix for the road. It's all carbon with a 3x drive train, and it is amazing on the road. I can't imagine riding an MTB on the road instead.
On a 15 pound road bike the difference is gonna be even bigger, is gonna accelerate faster, more speed and you are not gonna get tired like you do over your MTBs. You should try to wheelie that hybrid because It's a little more tricky if you are used to do it on your wheely bike and the MTBs. If you want to go all road, over flat pristine pavement, those skinnier tires and light weight bikes are gonna be unbeatable, faster with less efford. I have seen many people that ride road bikes that train over mountain bikes for the same reason, those bikes make them work. Man, you need a cyclo-computer to do these kind of test so we can see your speed right on the video. The biggest problem of these, is that they are as expensive as MTBs LOL
Hey maybe you guys can help me. I’m looking between a marlin 4 and 7 ( I know it’s a big difference) I’m looking to get the marlin 4 because of price and maintenance, I heard everything that the bike needs maintenance wise I can do it myself. Now if I can do everything maintenance wise in the marlin 7 I’ll be more than happy to get that and pay the price difference, can anyone help and tell me if I can do maintenance on the marlin 7 myself or if I’ll need to take it to a bike shop everytime something goes wrong any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
There's not a lot of difference. The main difference is the 7 has hydraulic disc brakes vs mechanical (wire) disc brakes on the 4. At some point you'd have to bleed the brakes with the 7.
So I got my Marlin 7 and rode on paved trails just to get used to it, get the fit right, etc. I would not like to ride it on pavement all the time with the tires it has. The geometry is not that comfortable for road use. And the gearing is just a tad off for pavement. I would guess the Dual Sport that has a fork suspension (those are history now) would be better for trading off these two roles. Nice video though.
BTW, if you are going to ride the Marlin all road, at least put the right tires for that. You can use those Maxxis Hookworms that are BMX style, great for wheelies and no rolling resistance, or just get the right bike for the job, you know. I have a hybrid next to the marlin and is way faster for commuting, but it is not that easy to do wheelies like the marlin.
😬 omg you are not running tubeless yet? 😬 😁 regardless, another great video. I do most of my riding in the urban jungles of Los Angeles, California and I maintain my tire pressure at 32 psi and if I go to the hills on dirt roads/trails I come down to 23 psi. I ride de 2020 SPECIALIZED EPIC CARBON EXPERT. Have been thinking of getting a hybrid but not sure that a hybrid could handle the abuse that a hard tail tolerates 🤔😁😎
Just bought an FX3 XL. Your test just confirmed my purchase.
Thank you!

Thanks for this! Just what I needed to see. FX3 all the way for me
Nice one, man. You did get those Marlin tyres singing though!
Do you find dual sport to be good compromise between these two models or is it better to just have two different bikes
Can you make a video where you explain how to adjust the fork settings on the trek Marlin 6 2022?
Hybrids, gravel, and road bikes are gonna be light years better on asphalt. Love my road bike, it feels like a race car in comparison to my hybrid.
I mainly ride mine on the street and I got some thinner tires when I replaced the stock tires and it makes a difference on the road.
…(which) made a difference? The Marlin or the FX? I so wanna switch to the FX (or add it as my commuter type bike) but I love the Marlin (5)!

34 T max according to the Trek website
Up next- Matty does a speed test on all his bikes🤣 psi makes a big difference on the road. Roscoe I run about 28psi riding around the neighborhood.
If say the solution is getting a rigid fork and gravel bike tires on your marlin to make it more similar like the hybrid

I’m honestly not too sure about the max size but I think 42 might be a little to wide but I would go to a bike shop or something to see for sure!

thats whats up your total fitness on a bike
either the FX or the marlin
Do that same ride on a trek Edmond. Climbs like Billy goat and descends like a fighter jet! I’ve had mine up to 40mph on a downhill 🤪
I've been that fast before going downhill...it's bone chilling!

Yeah for the road. Road bikes rule as they're supposed to. The FX3 is a great hybrid though. Throw some 28mm gators on it. And it will shift.
I can't imagine taking a road bike down a trail 😜

I bought Schwalbe Hurricane tires for my marlin 5. They have no rolling resistance and keep the MTB look intact.
Interesting, thats what I've been looking for
What gloves are those?! Love those colors
Thanks! They are fox gloves
Need help which would you recommend the ds2 fx or the marlin 6.
I would be riding paved trails, dirt trails, gravel trails. No roads or commute
I would definitely do the marlin 6
I found that 40psi works for every bike and every conditions except for fat bikes and trail rides: so i keep it at 40
so i may get the dual sport 3 gen 5

They just look like they belong in Amsterdam

I’m mainly road n side walk still some little trails nothing heavy

Whats the benefit of tubeless?
It is a great low maintenance
40 psi on road.
