    you really FSG'd us with the "unfortunately"

      "Now, this card has quite a lot going for it. It has a very nice artwork, I quite like the design. It also has a good amount of hp for a Basic, and in the expanded format, it can put in a decent amount of work. Unfortunately, this card is a bit underpowered, as it:
      - Sucks Ass
      - Gets no Bitches
      - Is clunky to play
      - 's Attack Sucks
      - 's Ability Sucks
      - 's Defense(?) Sucks
      - Is a horrid abomination
      - Falls to the Meta
      And those are just a few pitfalls. It's not a bad card, just a terrible one.

    i have a great sentiment towards Ho-Oh as it blessed me with fortune when i bought a booster pack with said legendary bird on the cover and inside of it there was a Darkrai GX waiting for me

    Secret Wonders Ho-oh was a sleeper threat in the 07-08 Gardevoir-centric format. Psychic lock was a two-shot and didn't disable Ho-oh's 50% survival ability, it resisted Gallade, and only sporadically needed to utilize Togekiss's ability for energy acceleration. Most at the time doubted it or dismissed it as a joke outright, and while it never saw wide enough play to make a ripple in the format, it DID manage to win a 2008 regional championship in masters- I could send you the list if you like ;) Love your videos!

    Ho-Oh EX was also good in expanded around Celestial Storm. You could revive it with the basic energy which would pump Rayquaza GX’s attack very quickly. A buddy of mine got top 16 at a regional with it!

    My favorite Ho-oh was the GX. Maybe a little bit overlooked in the video but it shared a little bit of standard play with volcanion EX and baby volcanion. The baby accelerated energy and the EX powered your attackers by discarding energy. Turtonator was also played and kiawe was a must play. Steam siege rotated and firebox continued to see play having a really good matchup vs metagross.
    Probably my favorite deck ever when competing in standard.
    Thanks for the great content.

    Another fun way to play Ho-oh EX in Expanded is with Alcremie from Brilliant Stars.
    The idea is that you turbo Ho-oh and energies into the discard pile with compressor ultra balls while you set up your board, using rebirth as often as you have 3 energy in your discard. Then you can power up alcreamie for a single double colorless to hit for crazy amounts of damage, all on a single prizer.
    While not meta defining or anything, it's a fun deck to pull out at locals or with friends that I find decently powerful.

    Loved the video. Hooh v is my fav deck and second fav pokemon behind braviary.
    It's not unplayable in standard. Squawk and the new double energy search make it decently consistent to power up turn 1.

    4:28 This Ho-Oh was actually used in competitive play alongside Togekiss which (at the time) had a Poke-Power that said "When you play this from your hand to evolve one of your Pokemon, look at the top 10 cards of your deck. Take any Basic Energy you find there and attach them to your Pokemon in any way you like. Put the rest back on top of your deck. Shuffle your deck afterwards." The deck also ran 3 copies of each Basic Energy for a total of 24 Energy Cards, along with 4x Holon Lass to help find them.

    This series is a joy. For me, it gets really fun when cards from the BW-SM era comes up cause I just remember all the games I played in paper/online and remembering the talk or deck theory on some of those cards at the time. Dragons Exaulted Ho-Oh EX brought back memories of the bad deck monday streams from Pooka. Ahhhh its so much fun! I'm really looking forward to a possible Scizor or Rayquaza video!

    As someone who has over 300 decks for the legacy format built and loves it dearly, I gotta say, Ho-oh Legend is not good. Ho-oh EX on the other hand is good enough in the legacy format, but Ho-oh Legend's biggest issue isn't even getting it into play, it's getting all 4 energy attached to make using it worthwhile. The only decks that reliably set up 4 energy on 1 Mon have other mons they'd rather charge for that cost

    With GLC being too luck based to ever take seriously as a competitive format, and Expanded being too broken to take seriously as a competitive format, what we need is a middleground.
    What about Expanded but with all multiple prize Pokémon banned? I wouldn't say ban all Rule Box Pokémon - Breaks and Radiants are fine. It's the multi-prizers that are problematic.

    • @WhimsicottTCG
      @WhimsicottTCG 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ho-oh EX DRX was actually best played in Expanded with Rayquaza GX, and then later saw some small success with Reshiram & Zekrom GX. The Amazing Rares are cool, but without access to turn 1 going 1st supporters, Ninja Boy decks took too much of a hit

  • @JFarenci
    @JFarenci 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Sadly there is not a deck on this list that should be there, Ho-oh EX + Dragonite EX.
    2015 Houston Regionals; with the help of my teammates from team Mad Pullz (the minds behind Big Tex) we cooked up this deck, but I just missed top cut at 5/1/3 due to the brutal time rules that year.
    If you get the chance to play older formats, I recommend giving this deck a shot. Its a perfect storm of aggression backed up by solid defensive options. Its ease of putting out turn 1 attacks of 80 to 140 damage is impressive. It has access to Virizion EX to make it much harder to lock, and its lack of special energy with an ability to continually recur attackers makes it hard disrupt. The card that brough this deck together is actually Ariados from Ancient Origins which gave the deck that extra bit of ceiling to hit the critical 170 benchmark and apply pressure from the residual damage from poison backed by Virbank City Gym.
    Overall, its my biggest regret from my time playing the Pokemon TCG that I bubbled that day. This deck was insane and I just wish I was more practiced piloting so as to not run so close to the time limits in those games. I really wish this awesome got to see more play.

  • @gamercal
    @gamercal 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Cool stuff! I want to throw a couple of points towards two of the earlier Ho-Oh's that are slightly better than given credit for:
    The Secret Wonders Ho-Oh actually was a fairly strong threat alongside the Togekiss from Great Encounters, which frequently managed to accelerate anywhere from 3 to 6 different energy types to it. As a rare Basic-based attacker at the time its relative speed compared to the meta actually let it top some events at the time!
    Whilst it never saw play at its release (to my knowledge), the original Ho-Oh actually DID have some energy acceleration it could use upon the release of Expedition - Venusaur. Its Harvest Bounty Power let you attach 2 Basic Energy instead of 1 for your turn attach, so you could Rainbow Burn as early as Turn 3 in the Neo-Skyridge format. Once again this format was lacking in Basic attackers (there were like, 2 others at best), so having one that could hit 70-90 damage was actually really powerful. Venusaur was more famously paired with the Expedition Charizard in the e-card format, but I had a blast using it with Rainbow Burn in our draft series.
