    Thanks for you analysis. Most guys don't understand the torque roll and how it can bite you. You demonstrated it very well.

    I loved your autopsie with the stop frame and explanation That is the single most helpful RC thing I have seen on TH-cam I wish more people would do this to help us see the steps to crashes so we can better avoid them :D

    Sorry to see it end this way. The slow flight with the flaps down had me thinking the landing is going to be very interesting to see, so on that note I'd like to see you replace this one and complete the flight. I love your grace and humor even when things go awry!

    Man, you are the proof that it's not mandatory to break in a new engine to have fun.

    Sorry about your bird but I learned a long time ago that, in most cases, it’s not “IF” but “WHEN” you re-kit a plane. Fritz, I just wanted to say “Thanks” as I found your channel and have been binge watching your videos and my interest in getting back into flying has been rekindled.

    A bummer ending . But good analysis of pilot error. I like the no bs. Excuses. Full ownership! That's how we learn . I'm new to your channel, and I'm really enjoying your content.cheers!

    Ouch! Oh well, it happens to all of us at one time or another. Sorry to see the Caravan go down that way. Ironically I was thinking if you have ever crashed. Now I know. I had learned something from this too, and that's not to overpower the airframe with a big motor and not to snap the throttle too quickly.
    Thanks for another great video, and we'll be looking forward to the next build! Cheers.

    Excellent job of re-kitting that airplane!
    I think your reasoning on the cause of the crash is on the money.
    I hope most of the innards can be used in the replacement Caravan.

    Bummer about the crash, but excellent video. Looked like a textbook stall/spin on final, aggravated by the torque of quick throttle. The only thing I saw that you didn't mention was that it looked to me like the left wing never recovered before throttle was added and you can also see that the plane still had a pronounced yaw to the left when you added throttle. I think you may have been able to save it if you had kicked in some serious right rudder before adding throttle, but the plane was quite low so even that may not have done it. Was a beautiful flying/looking plane and I hope you get another one:) I lost a Viper 90 to a very similar thing on a maiden, happens to us all!

    What timing. I was just looking at that same plane this morning. It does fly well from your video. I think your analysis of the crash is spot on. I learned the same thing myself a few years ago. Not wanting to accept a bad landing I gave it full power while in a slow, nose up attitude. And it immediately snapped to the left, hitting the ground inverted and nose down. From then on, it's always a smooth application of power while lowering the AOA.

    I'd want to throw an iNAV setup in this to get some scale head tracking fpv cockpit action and navigation features. Scale FPV is here. We should all be getting into it!

  • @bobbarkley5546
    @bobbarkley5546 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fitz, my crash was not as not as dramatic as yours. I had complete loss of power which led to the aircraft landing in a rough field and bending the nose gear lower strut about 30 degrees back. I'm now in the process of finding a machine shop to manufacture the lower assembly to get the bird back in the air.

    Ouch - Sorry to see this one go in Fitz....
    A few observations on the video:
    1) The giggle factor was there with this one for you.
    2) It was a beautiful model, and looked like it flew great.
    3) I think the wheels are salvageable. 😁
    Sorry for your loss....

    • @HobbyView

      Main gear or nose gear? Gear strength seemed adequate in my flights.

  • @PhilBender612
    @PhilBender612 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    yeah, a bummer. What a good looking plane though. That stall crash seems very unique. I'm not sure what happened there, but the torque roll theory sounds about right.🙂

    Considerably less embarrassing than the time I did a control check before hand-launching a 6' powered glider on maiden... but failed to notice the elevator was inverted; went straight from my hand, nose-first into the ground at full power.

  • @chrisingram9798

    I’m going to start using that line at work.
    “Yes, but will it knife edge?”

  • @imbok
    @imbok 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wonder, if you'd been making a right turn rather than a left when the stall took place, if the torque roll would have corrected the spin (or at least have helped) and prevented disaster?

    Contra rotating prop on the next one, right?

    • @HobbyView
      @HobbyView  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, no. But I think a three blade prop would both look better and reduce the torque effect.

    Also, propwash on the tail surfaces can aggravate stall characteristics. (Sometimes even cause one wing to fly in reverse with little lift...) Especially in a model with more than scale power to weight ratios and excessive throw available. I learned this when I was getting into 3d flying. These can be advantages in dire situations. This is one reason that I believe EDF's can be better beginner planes than prop planes. Then 3d planes would be the next easiest possible advance because of their ability to recover from a stall, once you know what to look for. When an EDF stalls, you quickly learn what recovery looks like without propwash potentially angle-locking the fuselage post-stall (as long as there isn't a thrust vector nozzle, but that is not for beginners). Finally moving on to scale planes for scale flight would be the way I would get into this hobby if I were to do it again. After that, I would go back to 3d precision flight. Then I would work into vector thrust after that.
    I kind of went off on a tangent there, but propwash is deceptive, too, and may have played a part in the untimely hard landing... lol

    Do you think a stinger 40cc twin will fit?

    • @HobbyView
      @HobbyView  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, at least not without cutting the sides of the cowl for the cylinders to stick out. We tested the possibility of a 40cc twin, but the cowl is too narrow and would ruin the look.

    Crashy-Smashy! I’d say accelerated stall. Flying pretty close to stall speed and then turning - whoops apocalypse. Thomas should send a link to this video to everyone who bought a Caravan and say “Don’t do this!” Was this before or after your day of issues at Bomber?
