  • TW: Today we're exploring a topic that may be triggering to some listeners. While ketamine-assisted therapy can be a great option for treating depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and even postpartum depression, this discussion may be triggering if you've struggled with substance use in the past. I want to make sure that everyone is prepared before we dive in -- if there's even a chance that this topic could trigger you, skip it, and we'll reconnect on the next episode.
Is ketamine-assisted therapy safe? Can everyone benefit from ketamine treatments? In this episode, Lana talks with Dr. Kate Daly, the Medical Director of Plus by APN. They discuss the combat origins of ketamine therapy, how ketamine has evolved to treat depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, pain, trauma, and more, plus possible side effects and common misconceptions. They clarify the differences between ketamine as a drug of misuse versus therapeutic applications in a clinical environment and share more about the treatment options and what to expect from ketamine-assisted therapy.

After 2 years of suicidal depression and several ketamine infusions without accompaning therapy, i had little improvement, but after one shot of ketamine combined with therapy (having preset intentions repeated to me while under) I was 110% healed! Its been over a year since and I am more motivated and excited to be alive!

Hello, my depression was caused by a health issue with my eyes and the loss of a best friend that all happened at the same time. Here is the exact intentions the therapist repeated to me several times while I was under the Ketamine. It was a single session for me, but I was told it could take a few sessions.
      - You can accept the eye floaters existence
      - It is ok for you to accept the loss of friendship
      - You are able to find radical acceptance and accept this as your new normal @@carlosm9111

I just had my first session on Thursday. I used a journal after immediately and also took a few days after to meditate, did yoga, use the playlist of music played at the time, had a therapy integration session the next day. I wrote down as much detail as I could. Everything keeps making me cry because it’s so beautiful.. like music, nature etc are so so beautiful to me now. They were before, but now it’s so much more beautiful. I had such a spiritual experience during my session. On the other hand even with things being more beautiful….things like sound are more intense. Like I went to a kids birthday part two days after and it was just so loud and intense so I went home early. It wasn’t bad, but I just feel so much more relaxed, calm now that life like a grocery store or something seems like chaotic energy to me now

@@sparkely1122 I just did my 1st infusion on Thursday and got my 2nd tomorrow.. I was awake but closed my eyes and listened to binaural beats... I was aware and then I turned into this vibration noise and saw colors that I never knew existed.. then I was ripped out this reality and had an out of body experience... no words can describe it.. that's was only one session and my anxiety is hardly there.. I enjoyed going out and doing things.. life looked brighter and the birds chirping were more noticeable.. hope I'm making sense

Was it hard to find a place in your area that provided oral ketamine? I am in Michigan, and it seems that the places in my state seem to be only providing IV infusions or the nasal spray, both of which are very expensive without prescription coverage.

i believe having a trusted therapist can help navigate upcoming thoughts and feelings is paramount. I have complex PISD and i have two Spravato treatments and it has been ver helpful. I can say i've had a nice reduction in anxiety but not a break in the depression as of yet.

So should ketamine be administered before rtms? I did rtms, which is what was recommended to be done first, but it didn't help. Now am undergoing ketamine. I wonder if the order of treatment matters.

I had my first infusion 5 hrs ago. I don't think I feel any different. During the infusion I felt myself trying to push any negative thoughts away like I was trying to make myself have happy thoughts. I think I tried to hard to control my thoughts that it didn't work for me. is this possible.

Try going toward and confronting those feelings. One at a time. Dip your toe in. You may be able to “get over” those traumas one at a time. Worth a shot

"In my opinion, yes. Generally, my understanding of any altered state assisted therapy is that there is an invitation to go with whatever is coming up. However, ketamine for PTSD has not been sufficiently studied so I can only offer opinion based on my education. I highly suggest staying engaged with your treatment team and bringing these issues to them for further guidance. This is meant to be informational only so locating a provider is important." - Lana

I get using the anxiety ketamine can induce as part of the therapeutic experience, particularly if the person struggles with anxiety. But unless someone is experiencing idiopathic nausea in their everyday life I'm not sure of the point of encouraging someone to tolerate the nausea that's purely a physical side effect?

    • @APNLodge
      @APNLodge  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

"We can and do pretreat nausea with Zofran. For some psychedelics, there is an argument that the nausea and at times vomiting is part of the catharsis, but I have not heard this very often for Ketamine in particular." - Lana

I think there needs to be more focus on therapy sessions with the ketamine treatment. Especially when someone is suicidal. What happens when the patient has withdrawals? My son never did drugs. He didn't know what being high felt like. It was a holiday weekend. It was 4 days since his last treatment. His anxiety was high. I believe he was having withdrawals. His appointment was the next day. Well he never made it. He committed suicide.

I'm so, so sorry to hear about your son. My mother committed suicide when I was 17 and she was 40, and I know that losing someone in this way is just devastating. There's a long way to go in developing best practices for ketamine therapy, such as better preparation and integrations sessions, along with possible support during the sessions.
I've done three infusions at a clinic in Colorado Springs, and there is no support at all, before or after. I go in, they shoot me up with the drugs, I come down, I'm ushered out. I know this is not the way to do it. I'm so sorry that your son ended his life. It's particularly horrible for the loved ones left behind. I hope you can find peace.

    Just Do IT 🤡
    What is Just Do It?
The idea that action trumps theory by a huge margin. Thinking, talking, and planning are good, but the greatest point of leverage for getting results is just doing it.
    Why is it Important?
Without action you will not get any results. The reason you don't have what you want is probably because you aren't taking enough action.
