    Well my experience with a 38 super was October 6th 1996 it was gracious enough to give me 247 stitches across my lower thigh just above my knee a costly lesson that healed not like God made it but works extremely well nonetheless! I had just sharpened it kicked out of a large black cherry only in the tree industry for 5 years at the time! My dad said so I was cut four ways long wide deep and constantly!

    I'm not so sure Husky is "blowing Stihl out of the water" these days.
    90's and aughts.. definitely!! Absolutely hands down. 371/372 & 394/395 were untouchable in sales and reputation. Air injection, smooth engine, great AV, not to mention the reliability and ease of maintenance.
    These days? Not so much. Husky's AutoTune is a hot mess that dang near requires calisthenics to tune/calibrate... Stihl's M-Tronic simply requires wide open throttle for less than a minute.... fixed.
    Stihl is definitely on-point with the first electronic fuel injection, the first magnesium piston, far superior dealer support (husky has pulled 58% of dealer licensing in four years, especially on the right coast.
    I know you prefer the older simpler saws, and they have a place in my heart, but the current renditions of pro saws are seriously impressive.
    In my unbiased opinion, everyone learned from the 372xp, except for husky. Lol.

      You should see the dealer network here in sweden, stihl is sold in what you'd call lowes and such. Husqvarna only has real dealers and i can tell you that Husqvarnas are easier to own

      I wish! About 6 years ago, in Massachusetts, there were 3 full service Husky dealers and just one Stihl within 45 minutes. Now, there's 3 full service Stihl dealers and no husky dealer within two hours. Same dealers, same owners. Husqvarna just simply their support.
      It's the same up in northern Maine "paper country", as a former coworker and army buddy has been complaining.
      From personal experience, most of Virginia and North Carolina are completely Stihl and Echo.
      Seeing a new Husqvarna XP on a job site is getting exceedingly rare.
      This all took place before the 572xp released in the US, which was a real disappointment. Luckily I was able to snag a 550xp in time.
      Unfortunately, most of my swedish saws are bench-queens now as I was forced to convert to Stihl. But, I'm very happy with my 462 & 261. (I would definitely prefer my 550xp...if the AutoTune would do what it's supposed to, instead of running extremely rich at low rpm.... and the clutch side crankshaft seal didn't come from the factory leaking)

    I cranked a P51, yesterday that my buddy rebuilt - one pull and it did not beat me to death pulling it over, like a lot of saws these days. I was impressed. It felt like my old Poulan 3750 in the pull over department. In those days they knew how to size the starter pulley so reasonable people could start them.

    Iron Horse I have learned alot watching your videos That Stihl 048 almost looks similar like a 028 and a 038. Those Stihl 041 AV's do vibrate. But the 041 I built for my buddy ran very smooth. I put a Dukes coated piston in it also pulled a 28 or 32 inch bar . I wonder maybe the stock piston is why they vibrate.

    • @DaveyBlue32
      @DaveyBlue32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That lighter Duke’s piston is not only going to help reduce the heavy vibration issues but it’s also an immediate power boost and throttle response booster!!! Less rotational mass and parasitic drag… the great thing about that black coating is you can check your piston occasionally and it’s very visible if you have any issues… I’ve started tossing them into every 372 or work saw I port so I can get some mileage on them and that black skirt will show any little spot you might have no gotten rolled over and eased in nicely!!!

      @kennytheguitarfanatic054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaveyBlue32 Dukes coated pistons are my favorite. Because my ms391 leaned out and the crank rod bearing got loose but the Dukes piston still was great. Yes with that piston and port work i did for my buddy's 041 said he could bury a 28 inch bar once broke in and the saw would not stall way better than stock i think.

    First chainsaw I'll run I think it was a Poland it had an engine a transmission looking thing then a bar and chain and the men I worked with used to laugh saw bigger than the boy . I got the money to get a 028 I run that saw until it was not ruinable then I was old enough to start working for the lumber Mill timber cruising

    Iron Horse great video! I just recently picked up a Stihl 042 that looks exactly the same as this probably about the same year and I know you mentioned the crank seals I can do those without having to split the case right? I put a carb kit in it and it does run wonderfully but I don’t wanna blow it up.

      Tiny drill and make 3 or 4 holes around it’s perimeter….just through the seal !!! Those holes can’t get drilled any deeper than just through the seals because your bearings race is right behind you… I use a needle nose vice grips and a quality deck screw… I just tap the tip on a sharpening stone or a very fine little file to dull it slightly… a couple twist and yank go to the opposite hole across the center and yank… that usually does it but I always make 4 holes so that there’s two holes across from each other just incase something gets ugly and doesn’t want to pop out smoothly… I hit them with the heat gun to get some warm into them and a couple drips of pb blaster around the edges of the seals where they are touching the case’s… so it can soak into those area’s… if you warm it up it’ll kinda pull it in it seems to me then it’s super easy to pull them out…

    Don’t forget underwater basket weaving and advanced pencil sharpening - the majors of most jocks. My BA took me ten years and a war to get. It is in American History with minors in political Science, Accounting and Philosophy.

    I have a question Ironhorse. i have come upon an 066 magnum , claims to have a new rod, piston, & head, claim it was run with wrong mix, 400 bucks , My saw man told me to steer clear of it , my question is can it be checked out ?? sounds like a bargain to me , but he says something about the crank shaft & the saw could possiblely come unwound , give me some advice Please Sir . Thanks in Advance

      First nobody would change just the rod! They would swap out the crank! Sounds a bit off! But that saw is worth that just in parts! Does it look good? That matters! Does it run? What brand top end? I would try to buy it for a little less and take the risk! Worst case you have an awesome saw to build and they are not cheap to buy!

      ThankYa Sir , i talked to my local saw guy , he told me basicly the same , and possible after market parts, Maybe the guy with the saw may not know what all been done or maybe he does , if it were mine i think i'd know what all been done to it , Yes Sir the pics looks good & claims it runs too , i dont know much but i do know they were fine saws back in the day , & would love to have one , it was nearly 200 miles from my home , is why i was askin , havent seen it in person or heard it run .
