At least you can get to appeal if your asylum application is rejected, provided you're in the UK. 70% of those refused take this route and, I'm sure, this is largely responsible for the backlog. Sadly, if you apply for a visa from outside the UK, you have no right of appeal if rejected - they take your 100 quid and tell you, "Better luck next time!"
