  • I could have shortened this to show only the actual repair. But there is often
much to be learned from the failures. Enjoy!

@2:07, reference to Brown Recluse Spider: I read somewhere that the BRS has very short fangs for a spider its size. They can barely break the skin of a human, which renders them fairly harmless, in terms of the danger of being BITTEN by one. But, if a person crushes one against their skin, in a way that drives the fangs deeper into the skin than the spider can otherwise bite, and simultaneously releases the venom, that's when the poison gets into the skin to enough depth that causes great harm. The resulting necrosis of skin and other tissue, around the initial bite, can take months to heal. I'm glad you're immune, Jerry. I just thought your viewers would want to have this new info. Great repair video!! All the best.

Hello Jerry, one short trick: Use a small piece from an aspirine pill...as flux (you met it in the surface with your soldering gun) when you need to solder tricky materials... Just brake the pill in small pieces and chose an aprox 2mm by 2mm (yes I'm from europe).
You can solder even a chrome plated needle like this, I promis you, just clean with alchool after this... is a quite strong acid in that pill right there.

On electronic parts, the faster you can heat the solder spot, the better.

Just like so much junk made today not made here for sure. Made to last just long enough in many cases to pass warranty if that. Not being able to change that battery is deliberate by the engineers & is unacceptable. Glad you conquered the problem. Typical planned obsolescence so you keep buying more so companies reap additional profits. Its a big issue today....Most of us cant fix things like you Jerry unfortunately so they buy a new one .. Great video for those are a little bit handy.....

That’s the same junky helmet that I bought from Amazon about three years ago. The thing came in a plain cardboard box with NO manual or documentation and the shade control knob was missing. Two red flags right there. Battery still shows 3 volts but no auto darken. Dumpster bound. I will go to HF and get one, at least I can swap it out in one day if it is defective.

Great that's the way to do it! (UK Seaside line).
Mine has replaceable AAA batteries but the headband broke. Glue won't take so a temporary repair with a random piece of plastic & pop/blind rivets seems almost permanent.

Glad it worked out in the end but I wonder if using a bit of aluminum tape to stick the contacts to the battery would have worked?
Another possibility would have been to solder some thin disks to the leads and cut an access hole on the plastic.
So many different ways to approach this. Glad you got it working. 👍

  • @WhiteDragon689

You can buy a button battery holder with wires. So solder the wires to the circuit board and place the battery outside the board where its... HA! stole my idea as I was typing... LOL

  • @Arick_Lee
    @Arick_Lee 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Unfortunately..Super Glue is exceptionally quick to whet metal. It is also acrylic based and a VERY good insulator. Which means it'll quickly spread over the wire strands and effectively do sort of an "enamel coating's" that you'd see on motor windings. In fact I will use it (infrequently) where I need to insulate wires somewhere that other methods can't get to.

I bought a very expensive welding hood a few years ago and kept it in the original box. Good idea -- NO. They would not replace it with only 6 months old. I should have let it be exposed to light to keep the battery up. It was potted and could not be replaced. OPTREL was about $500. Only used a few times. DON'T KEEP THEM FROM LIGHT!

In a commercial or industrial setting, those helmets get tossed around a lot.

Hey Jerry, did you use Flux with the heat to clean the oxidation off, sand paper may not work with that solder. You should get some electronics solder for doing that kind of stuff, has acid core and smokes when you heat it. I used to Fix/Repair/build Satellite receivers for a living.

    • @RosaStringWorks

Hmmm. You know, I'll bet there are only a few companies (all in China) that sell those complete insert package that fits a standardized 4x 4-1/2 helmet opening.
That way whoever sells the completed helmet can have their helmets branded with their logo, or design or whatever.
