I find it interesting Polistes species will nest vertically and horizontally.

Hi herc1120. Thanks for your comment. It is interesting how Polistes paper wasps in general seem very adaptable and hearty. We've even had them in captivity for long periods of time with their nests completely upside down so we could film their larvae development more easily (cell openings facing the ceiling) and they still thrived and seemed to produce well developed offspring (though they may have had hidden developmental issues we could not observe). When we have Vespula yellowjackets in captivity they seem much less adaptable and have much shorter lifespans.

I like to have dominula nests around because, as I understand, they keep yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets away, and dominula are docile enough that they leave our family and pets alone.
What's your advice, though? Should we take down all dominula nests, or is it reasonable to leave a few up? They do seem to be outpacing the p. metricus on our property. :(

@cd92606 - If your P. dominula are doing well on your property and working hard as pollinators and biological pest control agents, then you may as well allow them to live there. It remains unclear how much impact these invasive species of wasps are having on the native species in the ecosystem. More research is required before we will all know if the invasive wasps in North America are ultimately bad for the overall environment or not. Either way, P. dominula are a great adaptable species that tend to thrive in many environments so they will surely reduce your pest insects which is always a plus for comfortable outdoor living.

Can you do a video about the VIT?

@em7327 - Yes we will be doing a video soon about Venom Immunotherapy (VIT). It's a great medical treatment process that allows people with severe/lethal venom allergies to be cured for life with over 95% success rate. Many of our collected wasps are utilized for VIT and it's an excellent way to make sure they go to a good cause.

We agree! Wasps are great subjects for long term observation in the wild or in captivity. Sometimes nests are in inconvenient places and have to be relocated/removed, but otherwise, they are best left alone so they can do their important work in the ecosystem as biocontrol agents and pollinators!
