    When I graduated college in ‘95, AutoCAD 13 was the state of the art CAD technology. When I began grad school in 2002, I found out about Solid Modeling CAD in the form of Pro-Engineer and I-DEAS, and saw how radically different and revolutionary it was over the old AutoCAD I was used to.

    3D CAD was developed in the late 1960s as UNISURF.

    Where is Pro/E, SOLIDWORKS or NX? Autocad shouldn't be even understood as CAD software now. It's almost not used in mechanical engineering at all.

      They don't anymore. Too many other players. Autodesk still has a large market share, but they are not the majority.

      Yes, that is what I think too, what about the other commercials ones solidworks, revit etc, and then there are opensource ones like FreeCAD.

      @@garrymuir1442 AutoCad is king! I've been using it for 30 years. Revit too was bought by Autodesk.

      Well they sure were the pioneers of PC CAD, nonetheless. And then they began diving into the entertainment DCC software, and now they're trying to make the most of both worlds. But we all must admit, CATIA is still the standard used in a lot of companies and I was actually surprised to learn it was the first 3D CAD.
      Also, the new subscription based system being adopted by Autodesk kinda sucks imo

    Excellent video; the last part only focused to AutoCAD / Autodesk and Left out Bentley Microstation, Micrografx Designer (later owned by Corel) - and Corel CADD as well as Siemens CAD Software and the concept of BIM (And many other open source alternatives available for Windows MAC Linux)

    Also, I remember CAM, and if I am correct, it means "Computer-Assisted Mechanics." I remember that CAD/CAM came during the late 1980s decade.

    Dassault CATIA is actually based on Lockheed CADAM.

    • @skytrainii
      @skytrainii ปีที่แล้ว

      Au contra, that is not correct. CATIA (Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Algorithms) was created in the Lofting department of Dassault Systems over in France completely independent of Lockheed's CADAM. CADAM ran on the IBM mainframe and was a two dimensional drafting system. It was very fast, but very limited. It did not do any surfacing; just lines, circles and eventually splines. IBM marketed it for Lockheed. CATIA was a full three dimensional surfacing package using NUBS (a close cousin of the NURBS). IBM bought CADAM and the marketing rights to CATIA in the US. It was sold by IBM as CADAM & CATIA. So it seemed like CATIA was a part of the CADAM product. But they could only share simple lines and circles through IGES. As the Parisians from Dassault would say when things didn't go right, "It is bizarre; no?"

      Rhino3D is not a CAD. It's more a digital content creation software. CAD is Creo Parametric, CATIA, NX, SOLIDWORKS etc. Rhino can be used as a CAD in some cirsumstances, but it's usually used for 3D modelling, visualising or rendering. CAD is much more than that.

    Jesus, this is NOT history of CAD, this is advert on AutoCAD.
    In reality AutoCAD was and still is a niche product in professional CAD and CAE application. CATIA, IDEAS, Microstation and now SolidWorks were, and are way to go. And before AutoCAD there were plenty of professional CAD systems running on mainframes with specialized graphics terminals, and later on Workstations from HP, SUN, Dec, SGI... AutoCAD was a budget solution and mostly 2D despite the 3D name...
    So sorry, thumbs down for misleading name.
