Trade Secrets Episode 1 - Using Fusion 360 to reverse engineer missing clock parts.

In this video I begin work on a 300 year old clock that requires replacement parts to be made. I use evidence of the original makers intentions to sketch the part in Fusion 360 and make a start on making the replacement part.

The way I see it, part was cut in right way from pattern on the housing but it was switched reverse during engraving, maker decided to save time from engraving again and welded it pointing up.

Perhaps the replacement part was mirror scribed from the potentially broken parts from the original, thus making the part sweep up instead of down?

To almost completely rid yourself of the angular deflection you mentioned while photographing the plate, consider using a flatbed scanner instead of a camera when possible.

Ray Murphy 509 Good idea, the trouble with a clock plate is the pillars sticking up preventing the lid closing.

@@TommyJobson new subscriber here. May I suggest leaving the lid open for the scanning process. To my knowledge the lid is not important to the scanning process.

As long as the plate will fit on the scanner and sit flat against the glass, a scanner would work great. You could also use tracing paper, tape a pice to the clock plate, and then trace over the outline. Some tracing paper is more transparent than others. You could also use a clear plastic transparency sheet. Or a scrap of clear plastic from a disposable food container. Then use a fine tip marker to trace the outline.

Great video! I do like the long videos. Make them as long as you need to in order to properly explain what you are doing. Please don't sacrifice important info just to make the videos shorter. If you feel they are too long, just break them up into a series as you did with this one. Although, I thought you could have cut out some of the artsy shots of the mill in operation, if you wanted to make the video shorter. Or you could have explained what was happening with the mill during all the artsy shots. I know what was happening, but to someone who has never seen a mill, some explanation would be nice during those parts of the video. Keep up the great work!!!

In the 11:48 of the video it shows that in the original part the scribe line is wider than the part, but you make your replacement part to fit exactly the scribe line.
Did i miss something?

I think the leaf shape was cut out correctly from a flat piece and then when it was soldered to the other parts it was inadvertently soldered upside down, perhaps by a different individual than the maker? Possibly three craftsmen on this job, two apprentice and the master.

I agree, I think it was soldered upside down. It was done by a previous 'restorer', don't blame the apprentice for this one!

@@TommyJobson Since the part was engraved BEFORE welding the mistake was made at the wrong side being engraved not at the welding, he decided to weld it up sawing time on engraving again.

Daryn Radcliffe possibly. i suppose it might have been down to the size of the bit of brass in front of him, or he hard soldered it on upside down and carried on anyway!!

I would think they brazed it the wrong way, or reversed, and decided to carry on without correcting it. Weird approach on such a beautiful piece...
