    “Take care! It may be a trap”
    “If it is a trap, I will fall into a trap!”
    Truly words to live by. Finna get that tatted.

    There's a romhack called "Arcana - Seal of Rimsala" that fixes almost all the problems and makes it actually fun. The author set out to make "the definitive version of Arcana"

      It's a difference of accent. If you pronounce the H, it's a historic and if you don't pronounce the H, it's an historic. It's not as silly or arbitrary as inflammable meaning flammable or judgment and judgement both being equally valid spellings in all situations.

    • @danielbuzi7742
      @danielbuzi7742 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A vs an is decided based on sound, not spelling. That’s why we say “an hour”. In places where the H in historic isn’t pronounced AN is used

  • @Rackatiakka
    @Rackatiakka 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    People in Europe say an Istoric. That's why it's an historic.

    It says to shriek like a freak if I have hand drawn maps used to help complete the first Phantasy Star and Shining in the Darkness, so... *FREAKISHLY SHRIEKS* I love those games so much that I grew into a huge fangirl of Etrian Odyssey!! Those just planted the seeds, I guess.
    My husband of almost 20 years swears that Arcana is amazing. He once convinced me to give it a shot, because he knows I'm a glutton for those first person dungeon crawlers. Imagine my surprise when I start reading out text boxes as I'm at certain story points for him to go "uhhhh, yeah, so the whole game is in absolutely terrible Engrish, but I won't take back my love for it!" It's a comfort game for him, like the 7th Saga is, and I won't make fun of that. I never did beat Arcana, but I like the graphical style. I like the tarot card thing it's going for. The music's good. But I didn't like the story enough to finish it. *shrug*

      @@TheCommentNinja81 probably nostalgia glasses mostly, I found this game just a couple years after it originally released, so I've had it forever lol
      But (imo) it's a lot of fun! A bit rough on the RNG, but once you get used to a battle every 3 steps it's all good. You'll need the levels anyways 🤭
      Honestly though it's just a good game, with a unique appearance (the card motif) with great sprite work and FANTASTIC music.
      I'm also a little biased, as I own 3 copies 🤣

      Hi! I just completed Arcana at Level 45 and I mapped out ALL THE MAPS except the last floor/room where I just went straight to Rimsala to not weaken me or make me us too much healing items or whatever. Really did not knew what to expect even thought it's like any of the previous bosses gave me some resistance.
      I really enjoyed the game and the overall experience !! I like the general presentation, graphics and music, the automap, the almost under used cards concept, the engrish that made me laught, smile or just roll the eyes, etc. The encounter rate is ridiculous, but reviews prepared me for worst and I did played, beat and enjoyed The 7th Saga first. The bestiary is not the most varied, but who care it helps give some coherence to the world they trying to build. The game is very linear, but the fun was exploring the dungeon and suvirving it. I did not care at all about the linearity. I was on the edge most of the time. The 3th and 4th dungeon can be kind of danting, but if you play the patience card and regularly get out of the dungeons to heal, save and buy whatever, that will do.
      I don't love the game enough to get 3 copies heheh, but I will keep mine proudly in my collection as the first dungeon crawler I ever play and complete. I ask no game to be perfect and I think that Arcana is a nice gateway game in the genre. I am the proof! It gave me desire to play more dungeon crawler games. Did you ever play these other games in the genre on the SNES: Dungeon Master, Eye Of The Beholder or Wizardy V Heart of the Maelstrom, Obitus ???

      @@jayZER0_ do you know there is a fanremaster out there called "Arcana - Seal of Rimsala" that fixed most issues with the game including the tedious grinding due to the NTSC version increasing it, fixes the localisation, speeds up the game from the ground up in towns and dungeons, reimplements cut music found in the source code of it and more? I believe that could be a dream come true for you! Lemme know what you think of it when you get around to play it, as those QoL improvements basically cut the playtime by around 1/3th. :)

    This is spot on! I will say though I actually found the soundtrack quite memorable. It was one of the first to use that soundfont, so it still sounded unique at the time. The Bintel Castle theme is one of my favorite video game songs ever. Since it builds suspense for the first like 30 seconds, with so many random enemy counters, it never had enough time to get to the chorus until my third playthrough, when it *totally* caught me by surprise, almost like an Easter Egg. It works because that melody is pretty legit, and the stacked arpeggios really showed off the larger polyphony of the SNES. It made for a terrific penultimate dungeon theme imho.

    I love arcana bro, I so wish they would do a remake.
    Along with Shining in the darkness too.
    Similar to how they did wizardry 5, Heart of the maelstrom.
    It came out on snes, and the came out on PS1 a few years later.
    I do have to admit, I am big fan of Japanese style of art work.
    Even the storie in arcana, I did like it, I feel for the characters.
    Take a look at Modern warfare and the soldiers now, most soldiers in active combat today have to change their fatigues everyday or week.
    It makes it more realistic, unknown combat.

    The "an historic" error is something foreigners do because they wrongly assume the H sound in English is a soft sound like "an honor" would be. So it's not a typo, it's a translation mistake.

    • @ExaltedDuck
      @ExaltedDuck 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I wouldn't even call it a translation mistake. While it's not standard to American English, many other dialects use 'an' in front of any H-word. So the usage correctness is regional and I would even say valid globally since the standards do vary.

    A man who pronounced "Lynx" as "Linux" and "apparition" as "appertition" in his Chrono Chross video probably has no room to criticize typos like "an historic" especially when they are actually correct. 😅😅😅

  • @leadbones
    @leadbones ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jesus. If we disregarded every game with a poor translation and bad or no story, we would have had to disregard all the games. I disagree completely with this assessment. Back then, even in RPGs, the plot did not matter. It couldn't matter, or nothing would have been any good. All that mattered was gameplay. And this game is fine. Compared to Wizardry, Eye of The Beholder, and Shining in The Darkness, it's actually great.

    You dinstinctly sound like someone who never suffered through the lack of usability of early 80s games. Try _The Bard's Tale_ on a C64 and you will _beg_ to be allowed back to Arcana.
    That's just how games were before the advent of extensive playtesting. I mean, Arcana _does_ have an auto map. _The Bard's Tale_ has no such thing, but instead areas of _permanent darkness,_ some of which are filled with spinner fields that - you guessed it - spin you in a random direction when you step on them. In total darkness. Without a map to check. And traps waiting for you to step on. And, naturally, without a "save game" feature outside the home base. I played through Arcana and I do not remember it annoying me much other than my own party members, who I had nurtured and pampered, turning against me.
