    Great machines. I had been looking for one a long time, they are hard to come by. I found an 03 that needed work, lots of work. Put in a new top end, had a bent fork tube that I had to get straightened and the final straw was a stuck swingarm bolt. It wouldn't come out with a press in one piece, it had to be cut out then pressed out in pieces it was froze solid. Rejetted to low end pilot so that it runs richer and now its a great woods machine. Probably did a bunch of other small things that I can't remember.

      Wow that’s crazy that the swing arm bolt was that stuck! I put a Mikuni pumper on my 98. Pretty nice upgrade. Much snappier throttle. The stock carb isn’t bad when you get the jetting down but that pumper brings the power on quicker for sure. Makes lofting the front tire over obstacles much easier. Just wick the throttle open.

      @@Garage2Trail I don't think the original owner ever removed it. One of the last parts of my resto I wanted to do was change the swing arm bearings, stuck swing arm bolt made that a nightmare. I bumped up my pilot a few sizes with the stock carb, no more popping or waiting 5 minutes for it to warm up. I'm happy with it. For what I ride, Shinko gummy rears are the way to go.

      @@christopherfleming5409 I believe the pilot is a 60. Main is whatever the stock jet size is.

    Great bike , Great Video. I had 4 of them at one time, one for me and three for buddies so there was always someone to drag my sorry ass back home to my wife. Tractor is right. One thing for sure even if you don't lube everything make sure to get that swing arm bolt out and lubed every year or pay the price. I had one in a 96 that was stuck when i bought it. I managed to fight it out but it was a battle. every one I bought after that i would check that the bolt was free before buying...lol Had a 96,98,2000 and a 2002

      You got that right! I always keep my eye open for any that might pop up in my area for cheap but they are hard to come by. Either completely roached out or pristine and asking a a lot.

      Questions:
      I bought one a couple years ago and have done some upgrades to it but haven’t attempted to pull the swing-arm bolt, or even check it. Some questions may seem dumb but just trying to gain some intel before moving forward on this.
      - Why even remove the bolt at all? I would assume to do suspension work or to make sure it operates properly.
      - I haven’t checked mine to see if it’s stuck or not. Do I simply put a socket on there and attempt to spin it?
      - If it doesn’t turn, is there any type of penetrating oil I could start administering to get it to the point it can come out when I finally get time to remove it?
      Thanks in advance.

    • @ClassXIRoads
      @ClassXIRoads ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you need to be sure that the bolt doesn't get frozen in because if you have to do any engine or transmission work you have to split the cases and the swingarm bolt goes thought the cases.. also to do suspension work.. So take the nut off and then turn the bolt and move it out if it will come out , liberally coat it with aintisize and put it back together if it is stuck and you don't need it out start putting penetrating oil on it at every chance@@christopherfleming5409

    Hey man! Big fan of the channel. I have an 01 xr400 and just bought the same tusk dual sport kit as you. I'm a complete novice when it comes to anything electrical, would you be willing to have a quick chat about how exactly you set the dual sport kit up? Let me know, Thanks!

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! I’d be glad to help! So the kit is very easy to setup. It’s been a little while since I put it on mine but from what I recall the only tools necessary are for drilling into the rear fender. I made a couple 90 degree mounts up front that I attached to the triple tree. All the lights and plugs are just plug and play. The instructions from Tusk are done very well and the best spot to mount the battery is right under the seat or right inside the airbox. Mine is just on top of the airbox so I have easy access to the battery charger plug. Never have to remove the seat or anything, I just have the pigtail hanging down beside the airbox when it’s needed. That’s the best part about this kit is you don’t have to cut into the bikes wiring at all. You can get a look at the instructions before hand so you know what’s involved. Google “tusk dual sport kit pdf”. Let me know if you have more questions and I’ll do my best to help out!

    Do these bikes have a history of the kickstand coming off?

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  ปีที่แล้ว

      They are known to have some rust issues in the tube frame and weakening the weld where the kick stand is mounted. My 98 came off years ago and I needed it fixed. That was long before my other rust issues with that bike due to me unknowingly blocking the drain holes with skid plate dampening rubber. This 2001 has a slight crack on the kickstand weld as well so I’m very cautious when putting any kind of weight while on the side stand. I’ve been squirting fluid film into the drain holes on the frame to try and get rid of any moisture in there.

    Best fix for Honda XR400 is a Suzuki DRZ400! Two camshafts water cooled kick and electric start made in Japan.

    Just found your channel. My boys got an XR250R. Any chance you have a video on rear shock removal? I think all the oil leaked out, and its just springy now. Gonna send the shock off for rebuild. But while its out...going to do the suspension linkage with this video as a guide. Also going to order a new chain and sprockets. Any chance you have an extra stock muffler baffle/spark arrestor? I need to get one on his bike before we can trail ride, or replace exhaust with a slip on. Got any recommendations? thx

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thanks for tuning in! The rear shock s super easy to remove. If you watch my video and use that as a starting point, you can go up top and remove the one extra bolt that holds the top of the shock on the frame. You’ll have to remove the seat and it’s accessible from there. I can get you the torque specs too if need be. Also, I still have my stock spark arrestor on mine. Works great with a couple small holes drilled to uncork it and never had the need to get an aftermarket one. Your best bet to find one would be to look on eBay or join a couple XR groups on Facebook. There is a bunch of people selling stuff like that on some of the groups I’m in.

      @@Garage2Trail thanks! also thinking about the tusk light kit...but we don't have the title for his 250r unfortunately. Not sure how hard it would be to plate it.

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rbljackson the tusk kit works great! If you google “Vermont trick registration” you’ll find a loophole that allows you to register and plate your bike. Any bike under 400ccs and under that’s at least 15 years old is eligible so your 250 would work! Just get it insured and do the Vermont trick and plate it to get from trail to trail.
