  • This is an alternative video edit that I've just completed. It was commissioned - with full permission from the American Theatre Organ Society - by Blackwood Arts (Harrisville, PA.) It is the FULL-LENGTH concert that I performed for the 2021 ATOS National "Unconventional Convention." There are an additional five songs included on this concert, plus additional footage from the Blackwood property.
As always, MUCH care was taken to "faithfully" capture high quality audio on this program. A good sound system and/or headphones are required for the BEST listening experience.
    Happy watching and listening... Enjoy!
    Dave

It's great to hear Dave again. I've heard him in person in 4 different locations, including a pizza restaurant in Lansing, IL, the one in Greenfield, Vandermolen's residence, and Sanfilippo's residence.

I was lucky enough to see Dave at the Organ Stop Pizza in Tucson. One of my favorite memories as a child! My daughter is gifted musically she taught herself to play / read music piano, viola, xylophone etc. It is so nice to hear such lovely music and the pizza was good too!

Oh my gosh, this randomly popped up in my feed. We used to go see Dave frequently at Organ Piper Pizza in Wisconsin, it has to be close to 30 years ago now! What an amazing talent and a great guy too.

Magnificent playing with feeling on a beautiful organ. That's the majesty of the organ going to the theatre, to church and quiet listening. Well done.

Dave, when I was a child around the age of 7 my grandparents took me to a place called The Organ Piper in Greenfield WI. After that first visit I was hooked . You may actually remember a particular request of mine - “ Beverly Hills cop theme song “.
Music has become the passion in my life and I feel I owe a good part of that to you , and the Organ Piper . Thank you !

Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw your name announced with the debut of the restored Fox Theater organ in Tucson! Think way back when you used to play at Organ Stop Pizza in Tucson circa 1980. You reached down to pick up the request cards and one always said Widor's Toccata. You looked out in the audience and said, "I know you're out there!" That was me. We've aged since then, you've grown facial hair and I retired home to Tucson after 30 years away. I still get goosebumps when I hear a full theater pipe organ. Thanks, Dave.

Dave, I've been following the work of you and many of your peers for some years. It is kind of difficult to express, but for me and probably many others - during your playing - you let us sit comfortably in the middle of your mind, musically speaking. I become participant. A most extraordinary and wonderful phenomenon. Your gift (to us) is very special and you have my compliments and my gratitude. Cordially yours. RON

Thank you Dave, again you have really made my day listening to wonderful Organ music. I had a wonderful friend who had a Theater Pipe Organ in his home and I would help him with putting in pipes, and percussion etc. He is in Heaven now. Dave you have such a great talent and I could listen to you all the time, may you be blessed and maybe one day I'll meet you in person. 🤗

Went to a place in Arizona called Orgn Pizza that had an organ come up out of the floorand a man played it. I think there were various instruments around the top of the walls. Very memorable!!

Similar to a pizza shop in south Atlanta that was called 'Shakey's Pizza', had a fairly decent organ because they used to play along with silent films of the past. 'Movie night at Shakey's'. Long gone now from my teenage years.

Ben is my Mother’s first cousin, we were able to attend an event there at Blackwood in July 2012. Dave was the organist at the event as well. What an amazing experience. I am thrilled to be able to share a glimpse of this experience with my family and extended family here in AZ through technology . It was so memorable and I’m so very proud of Ben and Don for their generosity in sharing with others their fine talents. 👏🏼

At 1:02:21 Axel F... this piece you play in similar style to Jonas Nordwall on his L.P.'s at the former Organ Grinder in Portland, OR. You really got the 1980's feel to that track. Now just to add the aroma of the pizza served! ;-)

Are you fucking kidding me? These are the comments on videos like these, that I use for material on my channel. It is sci-fi sound effects and opera put together (two of my biggest things on my shit list). Don't get me started on "full." It's borderline metal at its worst (a cacophony of screaming, which is not music to me). I never understood why these creatures were put in theaters, as well as stadiums and other places. People did hard drugs in those days too, and it shows.

I fell in love with the organ very early in my life. Probably around 5-6 years old. Both classical/Baroque, and theatre. But for some reason my own children never developed much of an interest. I still hope they do eventually.

Excuse my ignorance, how are those trills being played in the Petite Waltz?

    • @kc9scott
      @kc9scott 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I had wondered the same thing. Practically speaking, it's got to be a multitracking overlay; I'm sure it was using a MIDI sequencer. If you watch the video closely, you'll see that at no time do Dave's fingers leave his hands.
There's another thing in the recording that's a giveaway as to the multitracking, which is the contrary-motion parts. One of them is at 41:28, and you can see that the ascending left-hand part isn't being played live.
I could envision an organ having an auto-trill feature, where you start it using Great 2nd-touch, on whatever note you'd like, and stop it with a toe stud, but I've never seen such a thing, and it probably doesn't exist anywhere. It really wouldn't be practical, because it'd be much too easy to accidentally start it going when you don't want to.
Dave introduced the piece saying that he got the idea for it from George Wright. GW was known to sometimes do multitracking in his audio recordings.

Does anyone know what the first song is? When Lowrey designed the Royale, it was to look more like a theater organ and I beleived to be the very first to have a roll top, as the cabinet was custom made to look like a theater organ.

The unique way theater organs arrange their pipes saves space. Pipes are used in multiple stops, so you don't need a big cathedral to house them.

Bravo! Excellent concert, Dave. What a beautiful instrument, in a beautiful environment. That was the fastest one hour and 35 minutes I have ever spent. Pure joy. I saw you in concert a long time ago at the museum in Sylmar, California many years ago. I had the pleasure of speaking with you and you autographed my CD disk.
One of my particular favorites on the CD is the Phantom of the opera. Gives me chills how you fade in and out during different sections of the song. Incredible talent, sir.
Thank you for this wonderful concert!
