      Hey bro! So glad you're still around.Always loved your demo's. Both aesthetically and just cuz your patches are the dopest on youtube. You're the patch king. I've owned my Z1 since 97. Saw this demo, years ago. and realised immediately id never gotten anywhere near its full sonic potential. I've always just found it a pain in the ass to patch. I used to do it, but it was a total drag. It got left behind when I got easier, less menu divey synths. I only bought it because I was intending on a nord lead 2 but it was sold out and i was too impatient to wait, so I settled for the Z1. Always regretted it. Still wish I had a nord. Anyway, Ive just started delving into it again and im gonna check your patches for sure, but im really keen to build my own. Its your demo that got me keen to finally get my moneys worth out of it. I'm not in the best finial position ATM, but if there was any chance of you making a patch tutorial video to share some of your patch building tricks or even consider offering some personal advice, id support your patreon with whatever I can spare. Id get on there now if I was in a better position ATM. So glad you're still active. I was worried you'd disappeared. I couldn't remember your channel name, so it took me a bit to find you again. Ive made sure to sub this time. Thanks for the brilliant demos.

      lol. Just read your write up. illustrates my struggles with it perfectly. It was a nightmare for me when I first got it. And the presets suck. I have a better grasp on how everything connects and where to go for certain desired parameter adjustments, but I still get lost with it. The display has faded a little too, so I have to bring a torch to it to navigate properly. So, yeah, if you have any advice or tips into comprehending it a little better Id appreciate it. Like I said, I'm familiar with it, so I'm not after anything comprehensive, just a point in the right direction. Thanks man:)

    • @DarkFutureConsolidated
      @DarkFutureConsolidated 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All that aside, Id fucking really like these patches. Is there anyway to get the patch data on it via Din or something? So much better than the presets or anything I've built. If the presets had been anything close to what you've built, Id have never stopped using it....

    The fact is, the core value of Z1 is the TMS57070 DSP chip customized by TI (Japan), each chip provides 2 voices (Z1=12voices by 6 DSP chips; Z1-EX=18 voices by 9 chips, very expensive). This DSP chip only licensed and made by TI Japan corp and stopped production in 2000, never ship to other countries. That's why only few Z1 were produced and no longer seen after 2000 (Actual production time-slot only less than 3 years), the only rest parts have possibly been built as MOSS-board for Trition Expansion but not a lot. Z1 sounds are unique due to hardware's difference comparing to later Korg gear and competitors. It's truely a lost tribe never seen any more. Rest in peace !!!

    To the doubters, I think this guy does some of the finest demos of synths on the 'net. He really takes a piece of gear through the paces and strikes at the heart of the instrument. You don't see him trying to twist an instrument somewhere it doesn't want to go--he really captures the essence of each synth and shows the possibilities it contains.
    And thankfully he spares us boring sounds like EP's, organs and other done to death sounds better left to sampling.

    • @HiGlowie

      Totally agree. I can’t stand hearing the same generic preset patches like organs and synth brass again and again. So me something with some expression and modulation, baby!

  • @albedoshader
    @albedoshader 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @drtritri: That's quite wrong. Even a new Korg Prophecy cost about 1400 Euros (2500 DM, I bought one when it came out). The price of a 12-voice Z1 was around 1800$.
    You get a Z1 in mint condition for 700 Euros now. Do the math.

  • @1vootman

    Its not "phat" in a analog sort of way, but The low end on this machine is monstrous.
    As I've said a year ago, this synth is like a special forces unit...it does a very specific job and it does it well. I've had it since 1997.
    I get sick of it...think of selling it...leave it high on a shelf...then take it down and fall in love again...only to dump it's ass later. That's it's cycle!

  • @Jauly

    Loved the editing almost as much as the patches in this one, especially the part will the doll's head. Do you have any idea what was wrong with that pig?

  • @muzicul
    @muzicul 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jexus = genius. I have seen nearly all of your videos - why aren't you signed with a major recording label? I have 3 questions:
    1.) Doesn't the plight of the pig make you sad?
    2.) Where is the transpose function on the Korg Z1?
    3.) How can I adjust the velocity sensitivity? I hooked up my z1 and axiom to Cubase and the axiom's velocity sensitivity ran circles around my Z1.
    You will hate me for saying this - but I think I liked the sounds on my Yamaha EX-5 MUCH better than my Z1.

  • @DELLAGE100
    @DELLAGE100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Z1 offers endless possibilities and super duper fatness to whomever knows how to program it.. people pay 10 grand for a Memory Moog or 5 for a Mini hoping to achieve something like this then realize they absolutely can't and would have only paid 500 bucks for a Z1 :)

    @albedoshader 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @3DrTri: Nope I don't take things always literally but the irony in your comment wasn't very clear.
    You're right, from a logical standpoint the Z1 can't be underrated. But I think despite all the praise this beauty got most people couldn't cope with the vast amount of possibilities of this machine. The Z1 wasn't sold in high numbers despite it's near perfection ;)
    One thing is clear, my next synth will be a Z1. I already have a Prophecy, so the Z1 is the next logical step for me :D

  • @albedoshader

    are there any offspring from Z1 ?

    • @robjenkins9839
      @robjenkins9839 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before the Z1 was the smaller prophecy..
      The Moss system was the put on add on boards, that you can put in trinitys and tritons, but the technology was first developed on something called OASYS. A few years back korg released a monster OASYS workstation.. That was a massive development of the original. (The original was built onto a pci card you could put in a Windows 98 PC. It won't work on anything newer, even if you could find and afford one)

    • @feralferret
      @feralferret 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The MOSS synthesis engine didn't evolve past the OASYS-PCI card (not to be confused with the later commercial OASYS keyboard) as I believe the designer of MOSS passed away around the time that the Z1 was released, so sadly it wasn't developed further. Some physical modelling elements were used in other devices, such as Wavedrum. The MS2000 and latter Korg Radias are different beasts entirely, though, and share nothing with MOSS.
      Most of the MOSS models were however redone and covered in the OASYS keyboard/Kronos to various extents. For example, the STR-1 engine on the OASYS/Kronos covers the former Plucked String modelling on MOSS (it may also cover the Comb-Filtering), EP-1 covers the Electric Piano modelling, CX-3 covers Organ modelling, MOD-7 covers both VPM and Cross Modulation, AL-1/MS20/Poly6 covers Standard Subtractive (analogue) and Osc Sync and Ring Mod.
      Which leaves just....
      • Multi-band Resonance - which were effectively 4 x band-pass filters, which I'm sure you'll be able to emulate in some way.
      • Brass Osc [three Brass types, plus two Horn types, and a Reed Brass] - this certainly isn't modelled, but HD-1 or other samples may be enough.
      • Reed [five different Sax types, plus two Double-Reed types, a Bassoon, Clarinet, two Flute types, a Pan Flute, Ocarina, Shakuhachi, two Harmonica types, and a Reed Synth] - again, not modelled, but HD-1 or other PCM samples may be ok.
      • Bowed String Osc - again, HD-1 or samples could work. AL-1 can also be employed for analogue-esque strings.
      .... of the MOSS that isn't directly covered by OASYS/Kronos.
      It's a shame that (particularly) Brass and Reed aren't physically modelled on the OASYS/Kronos as I loved their sounds on the Moss, but PCM samples may cover the lack of them.

  • @Jauly

    man, you're alone on wide grounds with your opinion :D
    unisono does not count as "fatness" in terms of fat stomache of a synthesizer. just compare the z1 and the prophecy next to each other with a high qualitiy mixer like a studer. I was about to sell my prophecy and buy a z1 a year ago... but decided not to do so. Even the seller of the z1 understood and was comprehending - he has both and is still selling his z1 :) anyay, the z1 is much more fun to programm because of the fantastic display.

    and yes... the prophecy sounds much fatter than the z1, but not fat in terms to a minimoog. on the other hand, the z1 is NOT a fat synth at all.

    @javiceres Trinity for 475, if in good shape. I got one without the moss enigne, and it's one of the greatest sounding beasts ever. ;)

    @escobarstatus You can catch one for $650 or even a little less than $600. But, be careful, they're rising in price. I got mine for $500 6 months ago.

    I think you're being a bit unfair. The guy is a good programmer, and he obviously has a very specific aesthetic he's going for. I understand if you're not into what he's doing, but it's not as if he doesn't try to create interesting sounds in his own way.

    Had this synth in the past, but it sounded too ambient for me, not enough punch or grunginess. But a great controller though, the keys and knobs feel just right, screen was good, too.

      That's because you don't know how to program it. There's no such thing as a synth being "ambient".
