Mike was the REAL DEAL. He could play anything man, and do it with such authenticity that it'd blow you away. He was a musicologist, and one of THE most important figures in blues revival of the 60s. His work with Dylan on Highway 61, the PBBB stuff, Electric Flag, his solo records...
Bloomfield was definitely an under-sung great guitarist with some on-the-fly innovative talent. some of the things with Kooper are favorites but my first pick was the live solo on a great cover of "I Hear You Knocking" (But You Can't Come In) with Big Joe Turner at the The Palms Cafe in San Francisco on March 5th, 1977. it's up on the Tube..
The best guitar-player I ever heard was Buddy Guy. But my favourite guitar-player to listen to was Mike Bloomfield. Albert's Shuffle could be cited to define the genre of blues guitar
Roger McGuinn had a funny story about him. Bloomfield was absolutely frustrated with him because he was bending strings. He asked McGuinn to show him what to do, and yes, the competitive streak was all there. Roger said he told Bloomfield he didn't mind Mike surpassing him. If I remember right, Mike also dismissed a lot of acoustic players.
