For us who researched the dances of the Cordilleras, lived with the ethno linguistic tribes from childhood -- learned their languages, and sold their handicrafts --- I think that today's stylized rendition --- techno percussive music and the "robo" movements are appalling. I willl definitely go underground with the traditional interpretation keeping Archaeologist Otley Beyer in mind. My classmate was one of his grandchildren. XOXO
My dear, these are NOT the TRUE dances of the Cordillera people. This is already a DANCE THEATER not FOLK DANCE. Yung folk dance steps ng mga Igorot, inaamplify nila to the point ha hindi na ganun ang pakasayaw ng mga katutubo---BUT, the effect is STUNNING, BEAUTIFUL, PERFECT! LDT, took off from the culture of Cordillera and appropriated it for their own noble purpose. For an additional example, yung banga, hindi ganun ang shape ng banga ng mga Kalinga, banga nga mga lowlanders yan, kasi rounded yung body ng banga ng mga Kalinga. Yung malaking tapayan, walang sayaw sa Kalinga na may ganung sunong-sunong sa ulo. Yung unang sayaw, mukhang galing ang steps sa Ibaloy victory dance na "Bendiyan" na sa totoong setting sinasayaw sya in concentric layers of cirles. I am from Samar, and I take pride of what they accomplished, BUT, kung iko-compare mo yang sayaw nila sa totoong sayaw ng mga KATUTUBO sa Cordillera, mukhang--- not in the same bucket sila.
