    47:50 sorry Im just gonna say it , what a schmuck , you don't want people touching them maybe you should set them further away ... I wish I had the 4grand just to watch him cry , I cant stand booth owners like him even if they do have good prices .

    If that guy doesn’t want people picking up his four thousand dollar grape agate he should have it in a proper display case .. or at the least have a clear sign saying ‘do not touch .. ask for assistance’ I stopped going to Gem and Mineral shows long ago .. just too many stuck up cocky vendors with attitude.

      That really pissed me off. His attitude. Maybe he realized he was on camera and started acting friendly towards the end.
      Might just be a little divergent socially. Hard to tell.

      @peridot_craponite_earrings 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The thing that always gets me the most are the people who dump out their rough opals into one huge, tall pile and then get pissed at you for wanting to look through it because they say you'll scratch them up by moving them with your hands. Ma'am, I saw you bring these here in literal trash bags with no extra padding and then pour them out directly onto the table like gravel. I feel like this is no comparison. Also those are always the people with the worst prices so not worth it anyway.

    • @chrisstrobel3439
      @chrisstrobel3439 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@peridot_craponite_earrings Lol .. that’s ridiculous .. if you don’t want people going through your opals don’t dump em all on the table at one time lol 🙄 I was always only interested in the dealers who specialized in crystallized minerals on matrix specimens .. so I never experienced things like that, basically I just got dirty looks and ignored trying to ask questions as I cruised through the rooms and booths in my T-Shirt, shorts, and flip flops with wads of cash in my front pocket ready to spend. You had to be in a sorta rich mans ‘click’ to get any attention at those rooms and booths, but I did get some attention once from probably the worlds best known crystallized gold specimen dealer when I asked him “how much for this specimen .. could you knock a hundred off it” and his reply was “get a Job” What a jerk, that was in the mid 90’s and the last show I ever attended, I did end up buying two Eagles Nest golds that day from another dealer who gave me the usual discount and wasn’t a jerk. These days I just shop minerals online, and it’s safer that way too since I don’t make emotional buys on the spot I later regret like I sometimes did at the Gem and Mineral shows in the past.

      Super late to the party but I just discovered this channel and yeah….that Keith guy pissed me off. He’s so rude. If that was me I would’ve had to walk away and try not to cry lol. Some people have no business dealing with customers. There was a million other ways to tell him not to touch while still being courteous and respectful

    That was so disrespectful. You should never talk to anybody the way that guy did, and even more than that he can obviously tell you an adult. and talking to people that way it’s not white if you didn’t want someone to touch, you just say nicely please don’t touch it

  • @FrenchyLikesChocolate

    Loved the video but yes Mexican culture is Native American culture, the proper word is indigenous it’s a global term but Mexico is originally part of America, so they’re native Americans too. There’s a lot of controversy on that, the only reason we’re separated is because of colonization.

      Genius and geology expert aside, he should either work on his attitude with potential customers or put out NOTICABLE signage not to touch the rocks. Maybe both. I felt so bad he snapped at Dave. Luckily, Dave is a decent guy and took it well. I wouldn't have; I would've mentioned to anyone who listened not to buy from this guy but that's just me 🤷‍♀🤷‍♀🤷‍♀💁‍♀

    • @ChubbyUnicorn
      @ChubbyUnicorn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@candacesweatt8971 that is an entitled ignorant view. It is common knowledge at gem & mineral shows not to grab the exceptional specimens. Which are the ones on pedestals at the back of tables. Many are dangerous to touch, poisonous, very sharp, extremely delicate. Oils from hands can permanently damage them. Those specimens aren't there for entertainment, they are for serious buyers and this is a trade show. Trade shows are where serious buyers go to get things for commercial stores. Customers should have respect for the things that do not belong to them and that they have no intention or ability to buy.

    @6:35 traditionally "pitch" was used to hold gems into the bezel much like we use grout with tile /mosaics. Pitch is used in the middle east as well as Tibet and India.Pitch is made from tree sap and was used as far back as the neolithic period for tool making as well as jewelry. In Tibet/Nepal they use wax made from yak fat but nowadays they have man made polymer clay/wax that is used but in rural areas jewelry makers still use pitch ...I love the archaic/tribal aesthetic of Tibetan and Kuchi Tribal Jewelry from Afghanistan, Banjara Tribal Jewelry it has such a Gypsy bohemian world traveler feel!

    • @lapidarydave
      @lapidarydave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hey there they must produce a lot of the casual sculptures the same way they drill holes using ultrasonic vibration essentially they have a mold that allows grit into the mold while it’s vibrating and ultrasonic vibration the mold is the shape of 1/2 of the sculpture or sometimes the entire sculpture and it pulverize the stone into the shape of the mold Sometimes the mold makes several pieces at the same time I can’t quote you on how long it takes I know it doesn’t take very long but is as fast as ultrasonic drilling is

    I saw you there, recognized your voice, but didn't want to interrupt you because you were filming. Did you see any used lapidary equipment there? I scoured the whole show and didn't find a set of used wheels I was hoping to find, or literally anyone but Diamond Pacific selling equipment.

    I was there, just left yesterday. Lots of “stuff” such as dyed, heated or otherwise “treated” minerals, fake turquoise, plastic minerals, etc.. Be cautious when shopping these big shows AND NEGOTIATE the price. The smaller local shows are best if you’re serious about collecting quality minerals.

      I wouldn’t say smaller vendors are always better however It is “buyer beware” training on what questions to ask- and how to tell if someone is BS. Thankfully we’re entering a realm where buyers and sellers will have more data in reach on how to properly identify gems. Unfortunately some vendors have been engrossed by what I call the “caravan” market- sell your stock at any cost/lie possible. They tend to have little care/too much of product, push a “instant flash sale” /“new customer” to entice the buyer to commit to something fake, or flipped/ dramatically inflated above the investment cost.
      Also go by feeling of the guy feeling. There are always opportunities for something new and amazing the next day. Don’t be forced to buying a dud

    • @lapidarydave
      @lapidarydave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey my friend I’m sorry I can’t really call you in a price point there’s almost nobody selling anything for a dollar like you might see at mom and Pop Gemshows and I can definitely tell you that things have double triple the quadrupled in price in the last three or four years but also a Denver in Tucson isn’t the cheapest Denver never was in Tucson has been going up in price because of the crazy amount of money it cost to them they’re sometimes some people are paying $20,00-$50,000 for the bruise for 22 days so they have to charge more our booth in Tucson is only $2800 but we have a small booth in a large venue
      I don’t have a website as of right now I post a lot of stuff on Instagram and sell things directly off of TikTok and TH-cam live my Instagram and TikTok is Lapidarydave as well
      I do have an Etsy store with a few friends called Taos gem craft www.etsy.com/shop/TaosGemCraft

    I stopped going to shows years ago....when everything is priced just as high if not higher than retail. Then when the boom hit people also started pricing everything off what high emd peices sold for....... Collecting rocks/minerals use to be a fun and fairly "cheap" hobby and trade shows like this was the place where people would come together to trade and sell so people from one area could pass on what they can get and so on. Now EVERYONE has EVERYTHING and are just RETAILERS! Im just waiting for Walmart or someone to be there selling.....

    Seeing Dave become noticeably quieter after Keith came over and yelled at him for picking up the $4k rock was unfortunate.
    That said I don't totally blame him, it is clearly a super fragile and special piece. He should've had it better protected though but still if you turned around and saw a guy you didn't know one handing it with a camera in his other hand you'd probably be alarmed too.

    I’m really confused… I may just be misinformed… in regards to the 23 min mark he says it’s $200 per carat and weighs it at 6.47 grams, which would be 32.35 carats (1 carat equals .2 grams) and 32x200=6400 so where is 12940 coming from? It’s exactly double… am I totally mathing wrong? Lol
