      Look at Obama or Clinton, how many sentences did they commute, how many pardons were issued? Trump did not change the verdict in Stone's case, he just said he shouldn't die in prison, it's that simple. Obama, to cite one example, pardoned a soldier convicted of passing classified information to someone who put that information online, Manning is a traitor, but has a clean record, why is that OK, but letting a man in his 80's out of a jail cell that would kill him, virus or not, is horrific?

The first European settlers in the modern US however didnt arrive until much later making the 400 year figure more or less accurate.

      Well, in a way it is. Popularity will mean a lot come November. The problem he faces isn't so much that, its that the people who are giving him those "rave reviews" are just more of his cronies. The actual American public has gotten pretty sour on his continual abuses of power.
      His hardcore base would still vote for him if he murdered their babies in front of their faces, and obviously his hardcore opponents won't vote for him for any reason. But that only accounts for about half the population (~30% always-Republicans and ~20% always-Democrats.) And he's been shedding support from the other 50% with practically every move he makes. Certainly plenty of them will be Republican-leaning and never vote Democrat.. but a lot might choose to simply not vote at all and that isn't much better for him in the 2-party winner-takes-all system that US elections utilize.

    I honestly don't think criminals should get to hide behind "this was a first-time offense" as an excuse when they're being convicted of several different offenses that were part of a pattern of behaviour.
    Imagine a comparison for a second, taking Roger Stone out of it: If a drug dealer is never caught with their actions for, say, 20 years, how is "This was a first-time offense" essentially any different from saying "Well, I'm such a good criminal I was never caught up until this point, therefore you should go easy on me"?

    • @fataldust9033
      @fataldust9033 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's a good point but the prosecution would have to prove that it is a pattern of behaviour over that period of time. If they can't they have to treat it as tho this was the only case of the alleged crime that was commited. I actually know this from experience being prosecuted as a first time offender.

      Trump is clearly doing things that aren't legal.
      Where's the checks and balances in keeping out a person from office who even before running was clearly a bad person and most likely breaking the law with tax evasion and fraud. Let alone now he's in office and has quite clearly broken at least one law and is actively interfering with the investigation by using his power as a president.
      You can't argue there's any checks and balances there. Nothing is being checked and nothing is being balanced. Which nothing 'really' is being done and probably ever will be done to fix such a broken system let alone country.

      Congress is not working at all, and thus that whole branch of check and balance went down(With the praises of Republicans)
      Supreme court is doing fine(so far), but they have an history of trying to not do any moral/political decisions, only deciding on what the law/constitution says and how to interpret it, or how it can be interpreted.
      However, the rest of the judicial system is being hamstring by the DOJ. Anyone trying to check on the president, have Barr breathing in their neck. He will either attempt to replace the leader(with someone who will stop any investigation), force far more lowered sentencing recommendation, or outright force a drop of charges.
      Add in the blocking and constant use of judicial system to delay any tiny bit of document requests, verification, investigation, etc from happening.

    I remember hearing a couple of times that accepting a pardon is an admission of guilt, and also means you have to honestly answer all questions relating to the act(s) you were pardoned for. And thus there's actually some risk for Trump to be pardoning the people who might have information that is damaging to Trump.
    So from the segment at 12:08, it seems this is not the case for a commutation... So, that would make it indeed the perfect "get out of jail" card for Trump: just let who-ever did you bidding get convicted, but tell them to not talk about his involvement. And as a "thank you", he commutes their sentence, effectively making the effects (or most of the effects at least) of the conviction go away, without having the person be forced to admit guilt and thus have to testify on Trump's involvement...
