I think it was in his Zach Sang interview (on yt) where Ren said that when he is performing for a crowd he knows he can't connect with everyone, so he would focus on one person and because we're communal creatures who 'mirror' each other's behaviour, if he could really speak directly to one person then the people around then would start to feel the connection too. So when you feel like he is singing directly to you, it's because he is. ❤
Not sure if anyone else has suggested it but if you want to understand Ren and what he's gone through, he has an 8 chapter life story he does (each with a clip of one of his older videos or songs, at the end). It was really interesting and fills in the gaps for his music story arcs.
I tried watching it live on stream, couldn’t make it past the first 10 minutes of episode 1, our stories are scarily similar and it just broke me haha😂 I’ll try again one day!

The thing I’ve noticed about Ren is the complete lack of ego with those he performs with. He’s just as good as lead as he is a back up. And he flawlessly can transition between that in a single song.

This song makes me think of my friend Jonas... who literally, drank himself to death. He was the sweetest person, but he hated being here, and I'm not mad at him for feeling that way. But I do fucking miss him.

Sam will never upload a video to intentionally be negative or callous. He didn’t mean he doesn’t care about the meaning of the song, he was just saying songs like this can have be relatable to many people dependant on their circumstances. This is a first time reaction so he didn’t know the reasoning for the video, he wasn’t being dismissive. At least now he does, so thank you for the info! 😊
Just my opinion, but I don't think he meant it quite that way, even if at the surface level you could take his words that way. I think his point was that whatever a song means to the artist, we each relate to it in our own way and that's the beauty of Art. It can be deeply meaningful to a diverse population, each relating in their own way according to their life experience and personal struggles.
