    I think the hole looks okay, and knowing it has a purpose so you can feel where you are on the knife without looking, it makes me like that it's there. I love this design. I don't generally buy pocket knives that cost more than $100, but I think I'm gonna make an exception with this one. Love the blade shape and the Bic lighter style flipper and how small and light it is. And good decision that there's no lanyard hole! Thanks for giving us a look with such a detailed review!

    Man one of the few videos up of this knife right now. It's checking alot of boxes for me right now as well as the Smock. They are both different than the norm though and have hesitated to go through with the purchase. Very cool offerings from Spyderco lately.

      I agree. I have two keepers from them in 2019 already, and last year I had zero. Not that the Kapara wasn't a great knife, but design wise it wasn't essential enough for me to keep one.

    Many of my favorite Spyderco features. I absolutely love that circular shaped flipper. Odd what they did with the small washers and the resultant lack of flick shuttyness. Perhaps some tension can be taken out of the liner bar. I am with you JT, that's a heck of a value @ $130.

    JT, so I just got my Ikuchi about 20 minutes ago, it came with the pivot tight, just a very very slight adjustment (didn't cause blade play or affect centering) and some KPL oil and it smoothed way out, it doesn't drop shut but will fall shut easily with a little wrist action (it's right on the verge of falling shut). Also I've got no problem with accessing the lock bar, I catch it with my finger nail nub and press, same way I do with my sage 5. My particular Ikuchi is a solid A grade.

  • @zac08
    @zac08 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Might be a bit late, but after so many users complained about the opening issues. I found some cheats online.
    One is to remove the scale on the non clip side and bend the compression lock part outwards to get it to loosen up a little. Then very lightly oil the mechanism.
    Holding the compression lock aside, I was able to let the blade swing freely and even deploy with a light flick upwards.
    Closing wise, I also preferred the middle finger approach and using the index finger to guide the blade down.
    And yes, the knife is 2.4 oz or 68gms.

    Probably answered before but I got 2.37 to 2.38 ounces. I agree about the scales. It seems like for maybe $10 - 20, rounded G10 or CF would improve the knife %100. I don’t get peel ply anyway, so there you have it. BTW I’m still carrying an oldish, beat up Spyderco Positron, flipper. I still love it.

    I have a reverse tanto 940. I like the dimensions and the flipper tab, but it doesn't look like a worker. I'm in construction and all but 2 of my knives cycle their duty at work. I did just pick up an Amalgam and its my current work carry. Great video and its awesome how your interactive with your followers.

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People always say that the 943 I have just isn't built for performance the way the 940 is, because of the grind. I think there are just a lot of characteristics we look for in a knife that we plan to use, but sometimes those things just don't matter too much at the end of the day. Whatever works for is what matters. Thanks for watching, I hope that Amalgam works out for you, cool knife!

    When people make "straw bale homes", to prove that the walls are totally filled with straw, they would put in an interior "window" showing the wall interior and the straw construction. This was called a proof window.
    In this knife the Spydie hole is not visible as the blade is completely hidden in the handle when the blade is closed. Hence the proof hole (window) in the handle to prove that it really is a trade marked Spyderco, with the hole in the blade. Genius.

    Looking at pictures I figured that comp lock tab would be an issue in closing as well as the lack of weight in the blade. You confirmed both reservations I had on this which is a shame as the design is awesome. But being essentially a two handed closing knife sort of negates the point of buying a compression lock Spyderco.

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I figured a lot of people would see it that way. I don't necessarily agree completely, but yeah, a big draw of a compression lock is that ease of closing.

    I knew I'd be getting this as soon as I saw it. A high quality folder with a blade that completely disappears in the handle? Sign me right up. Though I kinda think this knife would have been better with a ball bearing or even a simple liner lock, I just like the design too much to take any criticisms all that seriously, and I might just get some different scales for it eventually since that honestly would be the only main drawback for me. Probably something wood or micarta, maybe that covers up the hole, maybe not. We'll see.

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this knife looks awesome, it's on the top of my list and one of the few I'm willing to go over $100 on. I like the blade shape, materials, lock, weight and that it has no finger guard to get in the way (many of my hunting, bushcraft, wood carving, paring and even utility blades have no guards so maybe I've become skilled enough to not need them).

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think having a guard just give you peace of mind, and allows you to use a knife in certain ways without being careful. Traditionally, fewer knives had them and people weren't losing fingers left and right, so I'm sure we can adapt to one not being here, just like you did.

    Intriguing knife. I don't usually like flippers due to the "pocket pecker" effect as Nick Shabazz calls it, as well as their aggressive deployment. This flipper is interesting though. I also don't get Spydieholes when they can't serve the intended purpose of opening the knife, be it a fixed blade or on this folder. That would not stop me from purchasing one, but difficulty in accessing the compression lock might.

    Great folder for slicing even for fishing that would slice up a fish fairly well and with spydercos back liner. I love that lock not my favorite but in my top 5 locks for a knife.Nice and light love the wire clip always liked that clip.Looks like good action.I do disagree with this weird carbon fiber laminate and I would love to see full carbon fiber on spydercos other companies do it and the price difference if any is very small compared to many companies like ZT Enzo etc and some are even cheaper but spydercos knows they have a fan bass so they can’t do whatever they want they have gotten lazy.I was happy to see a fair price on this usually they charge full carbon handle prices.personally I’m over s30v and it’s mad overseas which if it was my company I’d sell it for $150 and use real carbon fiber PS sorry for the book.

    • @JTsKnifeLife

      Hahaha no worries about the book. I'm not going to guess what it would actually cost them for real CF, but it would probably cost us $175. I bet they could do it cheaper, but that's just how they're doing things now.

      JT's Knife Life don’t get me wrong I love spyderco probably own like 12 of there knives it’s just annoying to me even though I own the pho carbon fiber spydercos also.I really like this blade for a sleek thin slicing blade u ever want to trade I’d send 1st I have 60 high grade folders and 30 midtech fixed blade and some more interesting stuff knuckles the iron claw which cops used until the 1950 after they were breaking to many wrists but I got one in great condition when my grandfather died. A teenage girl could easily break a wrist of a man 3 times her size with it definitely an antique that works like new of course there’s patina but no rust.If your not interested no worries I just think Trading is much cheaper plus a good way to get rid of knives u don’t use or dislike for whatever reason but non of them are Because there Brocken put together wrong etc.

    Should have been on bearings. A button lock would have been cool too. I wish the blade shape was not so Persian I’m not a fan. That said the size, weight, front flipper, deep carry clip, compression lock, price, weight override the stuff I don’t like. I ordered one today.

    The price point should warrant top shelf CF, plenty of Brands offer such well under $130, once again you are paying a premiun for the Spyderco Brand, and that's OK if you love Spyderco.

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which ones, which models are you thinking about for sub $130 with CF?

      @@JTsKnifeLife I have been on a TwoSun jag lately and just opened this model yesterday and the CF is dazzling, I paid $61 and will be looking for another. TwoSun EDC D2 Carbon Fiber Fast Opening Folder Pocket Knife Aranea TS114-CF, also comes in a orange G10. Cheers P.S. What kills me about Spyderco is that as much as people love them they will tolerate short comings such as a uneven grind and such, I guess this is just a case of being on the bus or off the bus, Ken Kesey RIP

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They get a lot of slack because of the many great things they do, I agree there. In this case, it is hard for me to compare Two Sun prices to theirs because nobody can really compete with those price points. But Spyderco does get away work some things that other companies wouldn't, just because of the brand name. Dropping the Ken Kesey reference too. 👌

      Yeah, the Collector's Club. And the V is for when the knife is a variant of the original release. This one is just a 90, because it's the first Ikuchi. But if they release an Ikuchi with a different steel or scale color it'll be a 90V.

    I love this knife but it has one major flaw. You can cut yourself when it's closed!
    I have one and I can open it with the tip of my finger (carefully) catching it at the tip of the blade. The blade is not deep enough when closed so I will NEVER carry it.
    What a shame.

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JTsKnifeLife I think I might have to take it apart and shift everything somehow. I have heard about some people having the same problem and I hope it's just an inconsistancy in assembly instead of the actual parts having different dimensions.

      hmmmm. actually it was laminate but a little different texture. I really appreciate your review and I wanted to like this knife but all compression locks are not created equal. for a superb "gentleman's" knife check out the Ruike P865-b. I absolutely love this knife and it's such a steal!

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edrader I had a P865. Interesting knife, and I like it. Ruike does good things. As for the Sage, it was marketed as pure CF at first, and I keep finding forum threads where people debate what it actually is. Nobody seems to really know hahaha. Not sure if Spyderco changed the scales and then the description to say G10/CF or if they never actually were pure CF and Spyderco changed how they described it in the catalog to make it more accurrate.

    expensive does not mean classy. Why does everyone say carbon fiber is classy? It's high price-point tactical. Gentlemanly handles are as follows: Bone, Wood, stag, buffalo horn, ram horn, as well as other naturally occurring materials.

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's all a matter of opinion. My opinion is that carbon fiber can be extremely classy depending on how it's done. Sometimes you're right, it can be much more tactical and not so much gentlemanly. Same goes with any of the materials you listed. Yes, sometimes they look classy on the right design with great execution, but sometimes they don't. I just judge it knife by knife.

    I agree, the spyder hole is ridiculous, even ugly. Actually, the whole thing is pretty ugly. It would look better with contoured G10 scales.
    I don't buy the "keep the price down" mantra with regard to the carbon fiber. When others are selling very high quality titanium frame locks with real carbon fiber for $50, I can't buy that as an excuse...especially with their quantity buying.
