Honestly the biggest contributor to tankxiety (At least for me) is the other three goobers that duty finder slapped you with. You won't have to run many dungeons in the duty finder before you butt up against certain... expectations. It can be very easy to feel like you're failing as a tank if you don't already know every map, aren't wall-to-wall pulling or don't know any given mechanic for a specific dungeon: Unlike DPS or heals you really can't hide that you have no idea what you're doing to the three complete strangers who probably have very high expectations of you... which is why tank queues are so short. (Imagine being a sprout running their third dungeon ever and the DPS gets impatient and starts pulling for you. I'd want to quit tanking forever, too)

this is currently my experience, im new to the game and dont really play mmos often, I picked gladiator just cause i thought they looked cool and now im left with this anxiety to not ruin these peoples dungeon, Ive tried doing bbig pulls but usually just die and then get "advice" which comes off condescending, probably gonna switch to another job soon

What I've noticed playing the different roles is that when I play DPS I'll get paired with experienced healers and tanks most of the time and that works out great (unless I have to do something), when I play healer it's common for most of the party to be beginners and I've had run ins with troll tanks who play bad on purpose, when I play tank the healer is usually much more experienced and I've had healers quit mid-dungeon because I didn't pull wall-to-wall. A lot of this is caused by there being less people playing healers than other roles.

Literally just happened with me two days ago. I've mostly been running Duty Support but loaded into a general levelling roulette and got Stone Vigil.
Popped I was new to tanking (only 3rd dungeon I'd done with others) in the chat. Got a dps /pet me and then they decided to run ahead for everything, leaving me to try and pick up aggro in a a more haphazard way. I think they were trying to say 'you can deal with more mobs / do a wall-to-wall pull' but it really threw me off and I had to do more work.
On top of that during one trash mob pull the healer's cat sat on their controller turning it off. I barely survived through mits but the same dps had already run on ahead. I was like... dude, we're missing our healer. Got no response whatsoever and they just waited until healer came back and started their crap up again.
I've not run another dungeon with others since.

I think a big problem with new tanks is that they don't know they can just not deal with this. Just say "im a new tank" and then if DPS runs ahead, let them die.

i knew most of this anyway, but you get a like for a good guide for new players. the ui advice is gold.
now for 3 points i have.
    1) specifcly boss pull, i would always pull with your ranged ability, reason is if you run (in harder content after a pull timer) and wait till you and the boss clash, most ranged dps will already have unloaded at the boss and the boss could run to them, instead of you, second if you start your range attack at max range in most arenas you and the boss clash right in the middle of the arena, no reason to move anymore.
so, why ranged and not provoke. provoke, like you said, puts you at place 1 in aggro points +1. meaning if there is already 100 aggro on the mob it sets you to 101 aggro points and you go from there. if you pull with provoke and your provoke lands before any ranged attack landed on the boss you are at 1 aggro point (0+1) and then a 10k dmg ranged attack lands, you wont have the aggro. on the other hand (right here i dont have any idea about the multipliers and dmg and bonus enminity for ranged attack) but if you hit the boss with 5k you get 50k enminity (the tank stances is 10* i am pretty sure) + the bonus from the ranged attack. no matter what happens as long as you dont die or start doing nothing, no dps ever should reach your aggro.
    2) tank stance, in 8 man or 24 man stuff, look up who has the better tank equip, if its you keep it on and ask the other tank to off tank. if its the other tank, deactivate your tank stance. this makes it so the other tank doesnt need to concentrate to being in front of you and he can fully concentrate on moving, def cd and his rotation, instead of looking up at the aggro every so often and worriyng if you overtake him. or just ask who is mt. remember in not savage (aka not static) content there is no reason to fight with the other tank for mt position, just be friendly and let him do it, if he wants to (ask at the start who is the mt, look up equip, speak with each other). and dont go balistic if he provokes every mob down of you, just deactivate tank stance and let him be, if he wants to mt that hard, just let him.
    3) and i am sad that you didnt talk about it. if i could rate the video i would give it 7/10 for it (instead a 9/10). asshole dps and healer that think they have to pull for the tank. most tankxiety that comes after ppl started to tank, comes from this behaviour and is the number 1 reason why tanks stop playing tank. you will meet this type of ppl every so often, that think you are to slow, even if you go at a pass thats comfortable for you and fast enough (not single pulls, but also not quiet wall to wall yet and wall to wall in earlier dungeons means sometimes 5 packs, no tank could pull that, but dps wants you too). again talk to them and say they should pls stop pulling for you, do this once or twice and if they still dont listen. deactivate your tank stance and let them tank for a change or after you did 1 or 2 ae skills target the dps and shirk the aggro. some ppl say thats as bad as pulling for the tank, but those ppl in most cases are not learning resistant, they are learning immun, except if they start dieing. just ignoring it and "just ending the dungeons" is not an option in my eyes, because if noone stops those ppl they will continue this behaviour, ppl stop playing tanks and in worst case you just give this problem to the enxt tank, until they wanne go savage and wipe the group over and over because of their behaviour.
on the other hand if that method of teaching isnt for you, ask them 1 or 2 times nicely, if they dont listen to you, just leave the dungeon, do some daily beast tribes and then after your 30 min lock out is over, get back in with instant invite and let them search for a new tank for 20 minutes+.
oh and because of this, deactivate in your options, filling already groups in dungeons, because in most cases groups search new tanks, because the tank couldnt take anymore and left, so you just load into a toxic group, safe your self time and happiness and deactivate filling groups.

Even though I'm a long time tank, I really like watching videos like this just to possibly pick up new tips. Very nice guide! In dungeons with trash mobs I really like using the combo of Repreisal + Arm's Length if you're doing big pulls. Get in the middle of that mob and pop both of those and the mitigation plus adding slow really cuts down on the damage!

My tankxiety has been such that to get all my jobs to 90, I've been slogging my tanks through duty/trust support. This video at least encourages me to give it a careful go. I'll make myself a "hello" macro and state clearly that, yes, I have tankxiety, be gentle and polite advice and tips are more than welcome. If it doesn't work and people are d*cks (doesn't happen often in FFXIV, as it's not WOW, but it does), then I'll comment here and retreat into my shell - and stick to healing and dps.

  • @OldManDoom
    @OldManDoom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Having some VERY bad experiences with A-holes being just awful and childish, it really put me off every trying to tank. Even though I would mention at first that I was new to it and still getting the hang of it, for some folks that is never even relevant. So I stuck to just solo stuff. But after grinding with Trusts and duty Support, you can really get your situational CD use down and master your rotation using these methods. Alphinaud and Urianger are utterly useless healers, and almost every player healer is much more capable. So if you get good at managing your health and the mobs while relying on those poor healers in Trusts, you will get to the point where you can wall to wall with the Trust, then manage the entire pack yourself. Once you get more comfortable doing this, you go into a dungeon with players and you will cruise!

Thanks for the great guide! Honestly, I haven't (dared) to play tank yet... But this video already helps me understand the tank jobs a bit before actually getting into it.
I would love more in-depth tank job guides tho. Your in-depth healer guides are great and often I watch them again to make sure I don't miss anything as a healer!
Your guides definitely help me to be a better (sprout) player!^^

Really appreciated the tips on using 1-2 defensive cooldowns. I'm still a sprout-tank so I always second guess myself whenever it feels like my health is dropping slightly faster than normal as I progress through harder dungeons. Sometimes I feel myself wanting to pop another skill just to buy my healer more time. At least I know I'm using mitigations right, especially with diminishing returns on stacked mitigation. Also a good point for the AOE's because waiting for the cooldown after the ranged attack usually gets me hit than if I just started with an AOE to begin with.
Also with 11:45 are you talking about the succubus in the beginning of Haukke Manor?

Remember: Arm's Length and Stun abilities are damage mitigation. Stunning enemies that do AoE's centered on them allow melee dps to keep going.
I use Arm's Length in conjunction with one of my other defensive cooldowns for massive pack pulls, if I don't have my invulnerability ready (or the class' invulnerability isn't suited to that particular pull)

I used to be DPS only but recently took up the scholar job.
But now that I need to work together a lot better with the tank (or at least keep an eye out for him) I wanted to learn a bit more on it so I can give comments when something doesn't go right or feel like we need to change our approach.

  • @nooneshouldknowme206

damn I always thought Arm's length slow down enemy's movement so they'd run at you slower and hitting you less thus doing less damage to you the tank...but in fact it's entirely the opposite lol I always try to let enemies hit me mid pulling to SLOW them down (like the 2nd mob of 3 mobs I intended to pull) so that's why tanking was harder than it seems LMAO and why most healers struggled to heal me (at least that's what I feel after knowing this)
condolences to those random people that got with me in my 20-ish tanking sessions ;D

  • @JS-kr8fs

Most difficult part of any dungeon for any tank is the other players, for sure. You're trying to learn, trying to not feel overwhelmed, and you've got the DPS trying to pull the entire room for you, and you'll feel obligated to get the mobs off of them, and be blamed if you let one of them die. And if you're not clearing the duty fast enough, someone on the subreddit will say you're toxic for doing so, because they're obligated to fastest clears possible. Not exactly the chillest community in gaming.

    • @nobody-xh6ii
      @nobody-xh6ii ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah. I've seen people legit day "your healer is bad if they can't keep up with heals" when healers don't really have an isn't cast heal outside of ED sage which is a lv 45ish skill. So the healer is sool if the dungeon is a low level one because they are hard casting, then the dps's of the group often act like idiots running forward to get the dungeon done and then blame the tank for going too slow/not knowing what to do/being terrible when they might be new to it.
The tankxiety is absolutely the fault the of the terrible side of the community tbh.

I've noticed using a ranged skill to pull packs of enemies, that are spread out a bit to far to hit with a single aoe, will funnel them together so you can hit with your aoe on the whole pack. I just spam the ranged ability till I'm in range and usualy I have my cool down back to begin aoe line before or right as the mobs and I meet. This is with Pal specifically.

If there is anything that gives me tankxiety it can be my own team, as people in this game are irrationally impatient. I constantly get DPS who thinks they can be an off-tank because I decided to be a rational tank who is not going to pick up everything down to the next boss. But more often than not a healer will let them to die for doing so.

Ok, going to be PLD main for EndWalker...
I use Provoke only to grab stray mobs and aggro in order to Main Tank raid content. Shield Lob will also do, but is part of the GCD, not as far reaching, and interrupts the melee combo.
**Shield Bash** will also stun, and is useful when Low Blow is on cooldown, or in place of it if it's not going to break a rotation.
When I approach trash mobs I initialize the encounter with "Total Exlipse" then immediately (or close to it) follow it up with Circle of Scorn. **Circle of Scorn** will do DoT damage and grab any extra mobs that entered your aggro radius from poking the hornets' nest to begin with. This does not break your AOE combo and can be followed up with "Prominence"
Gunbreaker can do likewise by initiating with Demon Slice and following up with Bow Shock (level 62) and capping it with Demon Slaughter.
Warrior is in a slightly different boat, not just because Overpower is a Cone AOE, but I believe that Decimate is not an OGCD ability and requires 50 Beast Gage to use.
Dark Knight is in a bit better position. Initiate with Flood of Darkness (3k MP line AOE that starts your darkside gage) and follow with Unleash. I don't like placing Salted Earth until I've come to a complete stop, and wait until I see how damage is being taken before using Abyssal drain - which is instant and (I think) an OGCD ability. You're going to want Darkside going at all times, so initiating combat with it and grabbing stray mobs with it (if possible) can only be beneficial. And that's without bringing Stalwart Soul or Quietus (which requires points) into the picture. Of all the tanks, they are AOE kings and you should be hard pressed not to grab every available mob with one of these bad boys.
All of them can get the mobs' attention, but earlier levels in particular, Paladin and Dark Knight have the skill advantage. I find also that once 2-3 combos have been done, it's hard to shake that aggro, so you can go back into single target skills to bring any key mobs down more quickly.

Why I run trusts as a tank. Everyone anymore wants wall to wall pulls and I’m like dude! I’m only lvl 50 with lvl 47 gear I die a lot! Back in the “old days” you did one or two groups of mobs not wall to wall. People need to respect your level and experience. This game use to be the most polite and patient game in MMO. But remember always remember fellow tanks if the DPS is a jackass that wants to tank by all means let him and laugh… laugh loud and hard as you let him fullfill their dream of being your off tank 😂

Also not every healer is as good as the other. If the healer isn't that good, make your pulls a bit smaller.

I actually get more anxiety playing DPS. 😅 trying to get my perfect openers and rotations feels overwhelming compared to tanks or healers. Lol!

Great video! Leveling up multiple classes I see other sprout tanks all the time. Actually helped give a guy all this advice during Arum Vale the other day, and it was like he had never played the game before, lol! But sprouts always gotta learn :) +1 to tank stance, so many sprouts don't understand and think its a toggle ability like other cooldowns #readthosetooltipskiddos

Low blow. Dont just think about it as a stun, think about it as 5 seconds of mitigation per add

what gives me tanxiety is mentally deficient dps and healers who pull more mobs after I pull what I'm comfortable with at the moment, and coz im a sprout no one lets me tank in 8 man so how the fuck do I learn

I think the biggest problem for new tanks is that alot of new tanks remove their sprout or finish EW before tanking so noone knows they are new to it. Granted if you have finished EW you should know how to tank based off what your tank has been doing.

I have tank which i am happy to have a high one but suck when people talk bad about it, Then you wonder why more people don't try this. This sia game let me have fun please, stupid bitching about thing when i am trying to learn. I been wanting to try the Dark Knight but scared it might be harder then a Pally.

No tanking is not overwelming. If your doing somthing new let your group know, and keep aggro, and maintain your OCDs and you should be fine. Tanks can ignore more than 70% of machanics even in endgame content. Tanking by far is the most ez role in ffxiv.

this game is so fking boring until a major patch comes in. They need to change this up in the next expac. I only login every 45 days for my house and to do the new raid tier ( which doesn't come until 6.4 )
