Luka Dončić is a 19-year-old hoops prodigy from Ljubljana, Slovenia with a bright, contagious personality and a supremely balanced skill set.
It's been said that Luka is the perhaps the greatest and most promising young player in the history of European basketball. Lofty expectations for a player, but nonetheless he's been on the radar and in the conversation for the #1 pick in 2018 for the last year or so. He's a point-forward-type with great size and a solid build at 6'8" and 225 pounds, and a very highly developed and keen sense for the game.

First off, this video aged very, VERY well. He's now averaging a near 30 pt triple double, 2nd in the MVP race, and the de facto leader of the Mavs. If I were an NBA scout/draft decision-maker, I'd be paying VERY close attention to your scouting reels. Secondly, you make the best basketball content on TH-cam and it's a shame you don't have millions of subscribers yet.

The Dime Drop is seriously the most underrated basketball (scouting) channel of all time. People need to wake up, subscribe and/or get this man a job in the NBA for a scouting role. Watched most, if not all, your scouting videos for the 2018 draft and immediately knew Luka was the next "European Lebron" with how you brilliantly presented it. Im actually so gutted this channel hasnt blown up...

I'm just going to point out another great thing you just did in this video. Pronunciation. It's not the easiest name to pronounce and I'm not saying it's a mortal sin if you don't pronounce it 'correctly'. It's appreciated if one just tries.

Best pre-draft Luka analysis ever... It's crazy to think people were doubting him with what he had just accomplished in Europe
People tend to say... because he is already so damn skilled his ceiling can't be that much higher. But that was like saying, Stephen Curry out of college is already such a great shooter. How much better can he get? Not saying it will definitely happen, but Luka can get so much better. And he is already the best player in Euroleague. Insane to think about... 19 yo kid damn

That's not what they're saying. People say his ceiling isn't much higher than what he plays now because he's been through the hoops, so to speak (also no pun intended, but it did fit). When most college players get to the NBA, they haven't had any experience playing against the faster, stronger, more athletic, more skilled and better trained competition that you face in the pros, and you learn from that.
Luka has been there though, and he's done that. His game is very close to the his ceiling right now, and pretty much the only thing he can do to improve some more is work on his body, but that also comes with some problems of its own, so the truth is, he's probably very close to his ceiling already, no matter what he does.
@@rg7535 you are not him, you don't know his ceiling. Stop putting labels on things as though you had inside info. You don't. Luka will show what he wants to show. His ceiling is what he decides.
@@andrewkear8000 It's much more likely that other people who are good at observing players and detecting skills and gaps in their game will know what his ceiling is than him. Trust me, I played college ball, and as far as I'm concerned, my ceiling was Steve Nash. Turns out I was wrong.
Very few, if any, scouts or front office people involved in this type of decision making would disagree with me. He's very close to his ceiling right now, and I gave you the main reasons why. If you don't want to believe that, fine, you'll just have to wait a few years to know what we already know.
By the way, suggesting he gets to decide what his ceiling is was hilarious. Might be the dumbest statement I've read online all year, and the competition was really strong.

I am following him since he was 13 and I always said he is going to be great player, probably one the best from former Yugoslavia region ever - which is a high stake game if you know the history of our basketball...but that he will be this good his 2nd year in NBA I have never thought...

Its nice to see this channel get big foreal over night it seems, i'm a newbie to the channel but these analysis videos are so good and as a basketball player with overseas experience I really enjoy watching them! He has the perfect mix of comedy and stats to make excellent vids keep it up man. I know its so time consuming making videos like this, but man if you did some for stars/role players in the nba strengths and weaknesses I'd be in sports heaven lol!

I just hope we don't get us another Lonzo Ball (hyped teamplayer-passer) situation right here. Other than that, I too think that Luca is the best pick for a team who needs a ballhandler and a better offensive disposition.

Thomas S To be fair Lonzo's shot mechanics were broken since highschool and was a major concern going into the NBA. Conversely, Doncic's fundamentals are great and he has decent size. Furthermore, the transition stress entering the NBA should be less for him than the attention lonzo had with his skillset. If doncic needs time to adjust; due to his skillset he won't bleed on the court but rather just be solid. He's a very safe pick even if stuff goes wrong.
Doncic can shoot so Your Point makes no Sense not to mention that the competition he played much more difficult than College Basketball

Doncic biggest threat is noting but peoples's expectation. I got the felling most NBA fans are expecting him to be super fast, dominant, dunk-in-yo-face, do amazing things all the time and shoot .80% player which is not going to happen. I'm trying to say, people have really high expectation for him. People must realize, world won't fall apart if he's not ROTY of not even top 4-5 rookie players of the first season. And that's okay. There are so many talented players in this draft. Which is great!
I must point out that Luka, in order to get to his full potential, must get drafted by the club who is really going to use him and not draft him because he is talented and then just keep him sidelined or trade after a year. He will need some time to adjust his mindset and lifestyle to NBA. He will have to work on his body and quickness a bit, not too much, but just a bit. Therefore he needs a team which is not going to worry about negative comments if he doesn't start off so well. Basically, Luka needs a team which is going to be patient with him and give him opportunity to work and develop in a great player.
I had opportunity to watch him during the full live games (not highlights online- this can be in some cases very misleading), and here is MY opinion. I will try to be as objective as much i can since I'm not a professional scout, but only a great fan of this sport.
- He is a very, very nice shooter. Leave him open, he will make a shot. If you need a guy to shot a contested shot for a win, this is a guy on your team who will probably make it...even off the dribble.
- He is feeling very confident about his game. This is also explanation to a why should he have a shot for a win. Let's hope he will not change and become too cocky. Cocky is fine, but too cocky too early as proven throughout the history of sports, can be very dangerous.
- Very well rounded player. Can run down the court with and without the ball. But I have the feeling he feels most comfortable with the ball in his hand. Like he is a PG, but his body is screaming to everybody he is not a natural PG yet, his vision and passing ability is making him a perfect fit as a guard. I must point out Luka should never be moved to SF position at any point. Yes, he can play SF, but if you want maximum from him, coach should keep him at the guard position. He is not a wow-dribble--look what I'm doing with the ball-trick guy.(Sorry, I'm not sure how to put it down in English in a simple phrase). But he can beat opponent with a few simple dribbles and run by the opponent with a bit of a body strength, and if necessary, step back and shoot.
- You won't see him rebounding so much but if the ball is going to fall around him, there are good chances he will grab that ball.
- OK defense player.
- Now most of the things I mentioned above can be heard and seen online but here I will explain why I said I watched him during live games and not only highlights. His court vision and passes are great. And that what most people call IQ, but to understand how big IQ of a player is, you MUST watch him during the game. This guy, in the final mach of Euro League, was very, very cold at some point of the game. I think it was at the 2nd quarter. So he started shooting and nothing was going in from around (in and behind) the 3. point line. Unlike many other players who are being in the spot light and "all eyes on me" situations, (here I would like to include both young and older players), he decided to slow it down and calmed himself. Instead of forcing it in order to prove the whole world he is the next big thing, he decided...to share the ball. And this is an amazing skill not all players have. This is what makes him a potential star. To see what you are doing wrong and start doing someting else. He didn't attempt to make a shot for a good portion of 2nd and 3rd. quarter as far as I can remember till he felt comfortable. And then it started going in when it needed most. I mean. You have to admit. It is hard to control yourself in those kinda situations. People usually force it because they think the next shot is going to get in and set them on fire, but not this guy.
- This young yet so experienced. He played in so many big games already (Big for Europe standards).
Is he going to be first pick? By the logic- No. Suns really need someone under the basket. Their pick should be Ayton, as expected.
Is he going to be second. Well, yes and no. Vlade Divac knows him very well. He probably had opportunity to watch him and speak with him and Luka's father so many times by now. Problems in my opinion is- I just can't find his position in SAC if we want Fox, Bogdanovic and Buddy Hield at the same time on the court or starting 5. He and Bogdanovic are in some way similar. Fox is the guy who I think want's to have the ball in his hands (regardless of what he says in the media). I think everybody at the the Kings are aware of that and they are ether looking for a way to make this possible or just go with safe pick. But what is a safe pick for SAC? Marvin Bagley? Maybe, but I didn't forgot about Harry Giles who had all the time in the world to recover and work on himself during this session. Let's not forget Simmons and Griffin were in the same situation and they turned out to be great players. No matter what they do, I'm having the feeling SAC will regret anyway. Vlade should be worried but I wish him lots of good luck!
Is he going to be third? Possible.
This is the conlusion:
This year draft prospects are amazing. We are in position to grab a bag of popcorn and watch the history happens before our eyes. I believe there are few future hall of famers in this draft. Luka could be one of them. He and few other players will make other teams regret for not picking them when they had their opportunity.
