    I just wanted to say, thank you so much for making these videos. My husband and I have lived in Thailand for 8 years and my Thai is not where I want it to be partly because I never learned to read. Your explanations are so helpful and make so much more sense. I wish I had found your videos sooner. As a fellow believer, I want to be fluent to be able to pray with people and talk to people and have them understand everything I say and not just some. 😆

    My method is memorizing it in multiple different orders. The consonants+tones in the consonant list, every possible vowel combinations including with อวย and final consonant if needed, and then my next step is memorizing the tone calculations which is decided by the consonant tone class, and the rhyme or tone markers

    • @davevoetberg
      @davevoetberg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there Ben,
      I would encourage starting with 'Learn Thai For Beginners' by Benjawan Poomsan Becker.
      From there, any program with some clear, central Thai pronunciation. Just keep listening over & over. I bought the 'Learn Thai Podcast' program early on. Loads of example sentences to glean from. As I shared in this video, I like the pad of paper in the pocket (or just a phone) idea. Always being ready to grab on to a new word or phrase whenever possible will help speed things along. Keep at it :)

    Hey! I just want to say thank you again for these videos you've made. The way you teach has made understanding things so much easier. I've only been on it for about a week and feeling pretty overwhelmed. I do have a question. Since so many consonants have similar sounding sounds like with K and S and T, how do you know which one to use for a word? Is there a book or video that you'd be able to recommend? These tips you listed are things I plan on doing. I want to memorize the alphabet and I've already bought a notebook so I can practice writing. Thanks again!

    • @davevoetberg
      @davevoetberg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Emily Glad they've been helpful, Emily! Take your time on these as laying a good foundation early is pretty crucial for future progress.
      As far as your question about overlapping letters/sounds, a good dictionary is probably your best bet. I'll link to the one I recommend below. Overtime, you may get used to the frequency (or lack thereof) of various letters, but I don't know another method to use early on other than just spending time in the dictionary & doing memorization. Hope it helps.

    I'm also an atheist David but good on you for believing in something. Even if there is a God I doubt it would look down on me for not believing.

    • @davevoetberg
      @davevoetberg  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. Thanks for watching. Hope the video was helpful.
      In regards to your comment about God; He does in fact exist. He created the universe
      & all things, humans included. He has revealed this to us in the Bible, a book which he inspired
      the writers of to perfectly communicate his truth to the world. The fact that you (& all of us humans) have
      not believed in him actually displeases him & he has revealed that there will be a day in which he will call us all to account for our actions & be judged.

    • @CaffeineJogger
      @CaffeineJogger 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      nonsense! You're being mischievous? I thought you were teaching for the love of teaching not simply being some sort of missionary? Beware you Karma awaits you now. Buddism originated in or around 483 BC so your Noah's Ark theory doesn't hold Water. Even if it did the Fish can swim and the animals, 2 of every kind would eat each other on the Ark. Just teach don't Preach.

      @@CaffeineJogger I originally made these videos as something to help family members or others such as Christian missionaries learn Thai. I decided to post them online & continued the series. People have been helped by them & I've continued. I live & work in Thailand doing social work & sharing the good news of Jesus to people. The lessons are something I do as a very small side project. Not being mischievous at all. You mentioned God in your comment & so I wanted to give an accurate response to you concerning that.

    Hi there Dave! First things first: thanks for your work concerning learning Thai. I'm not referring much to this specific video, but mostly to your lessons about vowels and consonants. I’m learning Thai for a journey I’m planning for summer, and so far I followed your videos till lesson 4 part 4. Visibly you intended to produce two more videos on low class consonants. I really would like to add my plea to what Adrian Long asked you a week ago: now would be a perfect time for me (and, I’m sure, for others, too) to be able to continue with your lessons. Furthermore I would have lots of questions regarding the words Thai people add to their consonants. I divided consonants in three classes, too, but I call them No-Stress Class (for cases like จ จาน - you get what you see), Question Class (for cases like ฌ เฌอ - where would the second syllable „ka“ come from? Or ธ ธง - why is there no ุ if they pronounce it?) and Mystery Class (for cases like ท ทหาร - where is the relationship between pronunciation and letters?), so I (and others) would be eternally grateful for ongoing explanations… But for starters, could you please just finish our forth lesson? Please?

    But I have one problem. I'm staying in Northeastern part of India and there's no Thai people here. What should I do.? You said it'll be helpful if we engage ourselves around thai people. But in my case what do you suggest? Thank you sir. I'll be looking forward for your guidance.

    Thanks for sharing David, I find learning the tone rules overwhelming at the moment. May I ask, after 8 years of studying, are the tone rules automatic for you now or do you still struggle?

    • @davevoetberg
      @davevoetberg  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there Jack,
      It's been about 13 years of study now, and the tones are more on the automatic side. I do have times where it misfires and I use a wrong tone, but I think the early years of really trying to dig deep with the alphabet helped. Everyone is different in this regard though. I would encourage hammering away at the tones for as long as it takes, being that they are such a critical part of Thai.
