- LT77 gearbox overhaul. Part 3c - Final assembly & test
As TH-cam have moved the goals to become monetized, and I have a niche channel, funding is never going to happen, so I have set up a Patreon as I would like to get a higher speed upload, which means I get post more videos, AND in 1080
Takes me about 2.5 hours to upload a 15 minutes at the moment.
I will be giving credits to my supporters at the end of my videos from now on. I am very grateful to one and all!

I've just finished watching two long tutorials for gearboxes I don't have. That's how good these videos are. Great work Mike.
Thanks Chazani!
There is more to come!

You could also use a thin spacer to move the nut position instead of grinding it
Hello everybody. Few years ago I replace my old LT77 from my Defender for one rebuilt unit. One year later, fifth ger goes out sometimes, not usually. Last week, when I checked it, I can see that one of the UKC31L goes out from their position. I dissasembly fifht gear and put in the correct position but fifth gear goes out again. What can happen? Many thanks
Quite unusual - when you say our of position how do you mean, as it should be located in the slipper with a tang

Tang like frc7332?? I can't see it when disassembly it
One the end of the UKC31L there is a tang which locates in the slipper of the syncro - this is to stop it moving
@@BritannicaRestorations I can't see it in workshop manual. Can you tell me reference?? Many thanks
Lots of gearboxes carry their top gear outside the main casing.. the 2CV's 4th gear and the Citroen AX's 5th gear come to mind. It's because they were originally designed as 3 and 4 speed 'boxes respectively. Is the LT77 the same?
Great job wishing you nice and pleasent time
Thank you very much!
You get a like just for the autographs on ebay quip.
I know this is a few years old now, but you have managed to pass on such great knowledge which will be timeless... (these LT77s just keep going) I consider this to be akin to a modern apprenticeship where the master has been able to share his valuable knowledge to all those who are interested. Thank you for spending the time to make this series. Its been great.
Glad to help!
Great job on the LT77 gearbox series Mike - it’s de-mystified a lot of previous negative comments I’ve heard and given me confidence to have a go replacing the main shaft, thanks
Great!
Thanks for your support!
The LT77 was not a bad gearbox, but was not really suitable for a heavy truck, hence problems with worn syncros etc
You can do it yourself with a bit of imagination to make pullers - I had to buy the proper tools as I was doing a few back in the day.
Mike
Hi Mike - thanks again for these great vids. I had my LT77 (from an '86 Ninety) rebuilt by Ashcroft here in the UK about 6 months ago - unfortunately I now can't get anything but 3rd and 4th when on the move and they're both really notchy. I can get 1st if I'm trying to get reverse, and I got reverse ONCE but kept trying to pop out so had to hold it in there. And all seem impossible to find like they're moving around a bit. Not getting any grinding, just won't go into gear. Can't really do anything but superficial work where I am, so I'm trying to figure out (mainly!) whether it's Ashcroft's work failing or whether it's the garage that installed it back into the truck, or just bad luck and something else unrelated! Welcome any thoughts!
First things first
Is you clutch clearing properly?
easy way to test is jack up one back wheel and get a mate to turn the wheel while you put the car into gear and press the clutch (engine off)
If there is huge resistance with your foot down, then the clutch is dragging
Check that and get back to me
Mike
Hey Mike - Had a quick go - no seems fine - spins easily with the clutch in, no movement with it out.
Ok - next thing to check is the remote on top of the gearbox - the casting with the shift on it
Directly under the shift is a pivot and there is a plastic bush underneath - you need to check this bush is ok
Thanks Mike - are you talking about the nylon cup that the ball on the bottom of the shifter sits in? (like this one www.onlinegearboxparts.com/wp-content/uploads/Photo-30-05-2018-12-02-54.jpg) I had a quick look first, I'd replaced that a few months back and it still looks fine.
OK that's good
Next thing to check is if the remote is nice and tight and no play in the shaft and selector that changes gear - if that is fine, then check the bit that attaches to the selector shaft inside the box The U shaped bit
I am trying to eliminate anything lose in the gear selection mechanism
