Your stream was pinned in a "brief" by Robert Barnes, attorney, author and populist commentator. I've heard you discuss Dugan and his purported influence on Vladimir Putin's nationalism but this popularity of Leo Strauss in Chinese intellectual communities is amazing. It is no wonder that the demise of the European "Union" and its "values based" protocols is predicted by many Asian politicians. Truly enjoyed this conversation, though Chinese "love" of conservatives may be more fascination than affection.
Interesting! I’m Chinese, we have had groups on social media dedicated to study and understand Austrian economics theories, like Mises, Rothbard, Hayek, and Chicago Economists etc and Milton Friedman is mostly translated short videos in the Chinese internet. Those ideas guided Chinese economics reform and development in past 30 years, but when Xi took power, he put it on a break and looking for more Keynesianism on economy and cultural side of conservatism on the power grabbing by the Party. China is in a bad place economically now.
This was quite helpful in coming to understand Chinese thinking on this crucial topic. PS: As a Christian, I recommend old proverb: grass hopper should sleep with one eye open. Vaya con Dios, Hermanos
It shouldn't be surprising, that the primary dissidents in any communist society are also conservative. It's where the American neo-conservatives came from, in Europe they were the liberals but when they come to the US they are Conservatives.
The article gets a couple things wrong. Liu Xiaofeng never studied under Bloom. At the time of Bloom's death, Liu was at the University of Basel completing a PhD in theology. His interest in Leo Strauss and political philosophy didn't develop until many years later when he was in Hong Kong. He became acquainted with Strauss through reading Heinrich Meier. Gan Yang, on the other hand, was a student at the Committee of Social Thought at the University of Chicago during the last couple years of Bloom's life, though I'm not sure how much contact there was.
Always interesting to see how intellectuals see the relationship between the individual, identity groups and social cohesion aligning. The notion of a strong vs weak culture and open vs closed society plays heavily in the monograph. Nietzsche: "As men for the sake of security have made themselves equal in order to found communities but as also this conception is imposed by a sort of constraint as is entirely opposed to the instincts of the individual; so the more Universal Security is guaranteed, the more do new offshoots of the old Instinct for predominance appear. Such offshoots appear in the setting up of class distinctions and the demand for professional dignities and privileges and, generally speaking, in vanity, manners stress speech and so forth so soon as the danger to the community is apparent. The majority who were unable to assert the preponderance in a time of universal peace once more bring about the condition of equality and for the time being the Absurd Privileges and vanities disappear. If the community however collapses utterly and Anarchy Reigns Supreme, there arises the state of nature an absolutely ruthless inequality as recounted by Thucydides in the case of Coursera neither a natural Justice nor a natural Injustice exist."
29. Envy and her Nobler Sister.-Where equality is really recognised and permanently established, we see the rise of that propensity that is generally considered immoral, and would scarcely be conceivable in a state of nature-envy. The envious man is susceptible to every sign of individual superiority to the common herd, and wishes to depress every one once more to the level-or raise himself to the superior plane. Hence arise two different modes of action, which Hesiod designated good and bad Eris. In the same way, in a condition of equality there arises indignation if A. is prosperous above and B. unfortunate beneath their deserts and equality. These latter, however, are emotions of nobler natures. They feel the want of justice and equity in things that are independent of the arbitrary choice of men-or, in other words, they desire the equality recognised by man to be recognised as well by Nature and chance. They are angry that men of equal merits should not have equal fortune.
And yet the West is a concept formed by global market and capitalism, which function as much in China as anywhere else. So the left-right conflict was also introduced to China, although at some time later than Europe and the Americas.
Did you know China censors woke and pornographic content? China is very conservative. China values traditional culture and femininity. You can see it in the Olympic opening ceremonies, in TV dramas, in movies, in politics and economics. China has always promoted Confucianism and conservative values in politics and entertainment.
Leo Strauss aka only I understand the REAL meaning of plato, better than greeks. Only I understand maimonedes, better than rabbis. Only I understand al farabi, better than kalamists. Lol Talk about being a mega mind.
Fascinating topic. Thank you.

If You think about it 'Left' and 'Right' are intrinsic Western concepts.
What if I don't think about it?...
Are they still western concepts?🤔
And yet the West is a concept formed by global market and capitalism, which function as much in China as anywhere else. So the left-right conflict was also introduced to China, although at some time later than Europe and the Americas.

Isn't this article actually just a neocon letter to Santa?
Let's trade: Mandarin lessons for a Strauss course...你怎麼想?
What is love here? They act the exact opposite.
