  • Hey everyone! In this video I rake open a simple 4 pin Master Lock 140 a number of times with different rakes. I also talk about my favourite rakes and my plan of attack while looking more at my rake collection. Enjoy!

    Glad to see misery loves company. I thought this lock was going to be a piece of cake, but the bugger has so little room to maneuver, and the pins are so fickle, I have made it my life's goal to open it.

    The trick with picking the 140 is to be very careful about not oversetting. That was always my issue SPP'ing the 140. In mine (Older one with spool at 3rd), all I gotta do is set 2, being careful not to overset it and then just pop 3 into place. Takes just a few seconds. Don't even gotta touch 1 or 4.

    Is it just me? I've noticed that I can pick/ rake open a lock a few times, then it gets difficult to pick, and I have to set it to the side and come back later...

    This was the first padlock I bought just to pick and to test a comb tool (which will open it). I wasn't able to single pin pick it for about 2 weeks, nor get in with a Peterson bogatar or city rake, although I did jiggle it once. Eventually I got a snake free with a chinese clear practice lock and that works almost every time! Love your channel, I get all my lock pick advice from you and Bosnian bill! Cheers, Andrew in Australia.

    You can rake spools on the small masterlocks and brinks though I do more rocking while moving slowly in and out. If you're careful you can figure out whats binding with your rake to go after it specifically and even drop in to a false set while jiggling and intentionally find the binding spool with your rake, especially the worm.

    As a lock noob myself, these 140s are hard to pick; at least the new ones are. The pins are spongy, hard to set/manage, and extreme bit difference. I've seen picking success with comb rake & half diamond rake, but wonder if they're an old version of the 140.

    I’ve literally just got this lock today and opened the package 15 minutes ago. I’m subscribed to you anyway but just typed master lock 140 into the search bar. I watched your SPP video that came before this one. I tried briefly for 5 minutes or so trying to do it that way but haven’t as yet. Now I’ve just tried jiggling with a triple peak one (idk the names 😂) and opened it thrice consecutively so I don’t think it was a fluke. I just have to release tension a little right before it opens

    I like rakes too, and have a decent sized collection. When I first got into Locksport, I had the most success with raking. BUT, single pin picking is also a fun challenge, and often is the only alternative when raking doesn't work. I have some prized Snake Rakes that are among my favorite picks. I can SPP with a Snake Rake. I often turn the pick upside down and use it like a hook, or I can use the single hump like a short hook sometimes. Also, Sparrows Worm rake is a great rake. And, Sparrows makes a medium hook called The Attila, which is like a thin version of a Peterson Gem. Excellent hook.

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I like to rake, but the fun for me is SPP

    I just got into the hobby and got this with the multipick elite 9. I lucked into opening it with the snake tool on the first try 😅. No luck yet with the single pick. I feel like the pick in this set is too tall for this lock.

    • @LockNoob

      Tex Patriot they can be tricky. It depends largely on the bitting :-)

    I don't get it. I bought a Master 140 specifically to learn and practice on. I have tried every pick and rake I own and I just cannot open it. What am I doing wrong? Should I only be using just enough tension to move the cylinder?
    Btw, do you happen to know if they can be shimmed?

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can be shimmed. Also tension is key with raking... these 140s have spool pins too, which don’t make them great beginner raking locks. Try a master lock 3 or 5 :-)

    We bought a house and there were three of these on different gates around the property, but no keys. I was able to rake them open almost faster than if I had the key. Sheer luck maybe, but I still can SPP and rake these things in no time. Now, I have a Master 911 that I can't pick to save my life! I even took the core out and put it in my Panavise and still can't pick it! It's kicking my butt!

  • @stevenhodgson834
    @stevenhodgson834 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You can rake the Master 140 with the Southord Bogota if you use top-of-the-keyway tension - there's enough room.

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The thing is, the key determining factor with raking is the bitting. A bogota might work very well for some 140's but not all of them.

    • @stevenhodgson834
      @stevenhodgson834 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah, that is true. Just had a look at mine and the bitting is fairly even and quite high for all the pins. Great channel, BTW.
