I have done 2 tours as a Peacekeeper in East Timor/Timor Leste. Ramos Horta is a genuine man of the people with his country's best interests in his heart. I have seen the damage the Indonesians did to the country and its people and wish the Tmorese the best as an independent nation.

He is smart man that's why former Indonesian foreign minister Ali Alatas was not able to fight against him during 24 yrs in diplomacy area . Timor Leste is small country but their leaders were well educated under Portugal education system. Compared to Indonesian education system during 24 yrs of course they opened a lot of schools including university but very poor in quality. We can say that Indonesia education is high in quantity but very low in quality .

ramos horta is a very intelligent man and he was right about everything, in a time when commies where all over the place specially in 3 world selling pipe dreams he denied them any influence in east timor and wanted to work out a ind. with Portugal, and he had a view of what he wanted for the country early on, he deserves to be the countrys president

They Timorese didn't even want independence, we had to ask them to form parties. This is how it happened, three parties were formed, one of communist inspiration, Fretlin, which began to create problems for others, Fretlin went to war with the others, made arrests, carried out killings, Xanana himself in his book states this, that they were the ones who slaughtered many Timorese , Indonesia could not accept a movement inspired by Cuba at its side. It invaded and that was all that was known - Portugal continued as an administrative power, as it didn't even have time to gain independence, which is why the UN never recognized Indonesia but rather Portugal. Indonesians after 25 years of genocide against the Timorese people, went to a referendum and Indonesia lost and had to withdraw from Timor and caused devastation and killings to the people of Timor. Only then could Portugal give independence. In these 25 years of genocide against the people of Timor, Portugal was always on the side of the Timorese people and tens of thousands came to Portugal, as they were Portuguese Timorese. Thinking about it today, it would be much better for the Timorese people to be linked to Portugal like Madeira-Azores.-- . France-England still has provinces in the Pacific and these people want to be French---the same wanted the Timorese, to be part of Portugal, as they were European Timorese with all the help and today it would be a very developed country overseas. Hugs to our Timorese brothers. --from Portugal

@Ramos Horta was and is. But not the others. The others was just looking for their brothers to kill. Because they were too radical
