Victoria this was a very thoughtful video of you. I really like you are open to other people's ideas. I agree with you, I think people shouldn't follow someone just because of the color of their skin. For example, I like you because you always try to fair and when you smile it makes me smile too , no matter how bad my day has been. So, I just want to thank you on this video and I hope you make more.
I have not watched, or heard of this girl's video, but as a conservative half-latina, half-white girl I do kind of agree with her on things. In terms of racism, I've never really experienced it where I've grown up. Granted it was mainly in blue states and communities, but having been around other conservatives I've been embraced for my way of thought rather than skin color. However I do agree with you on many points as well that if you're actively seeking out POC's booktube videos, then you are a racist. On the contrary, just because you're subscribed to a lot, or solely, white booktubers it doesn't make you a white nationalist. Many of the booktubers that I've seen pop up with more or less good quality videos have been white, and I think that has more to do with a lack of POC booktubers than anything. In terms of schools having mainly white teachers, I disagree. Having been born in America I mostly see POC or those that have names that imply they are getting jobs and opportunities over white people, which I disagree with. I believe those best suited for the job should receive, which I kind of think you might've alluded to. After having watched a few videos in which you openly express your political opinions I don't believe you to be an extremist, and I can see you're more open to a debate. Though in terms of modern conservatism I've seen people thrive and celebrate our difference of thought rather than difference of skin color or nationality in America. I really don't agree with identity politics because I feel it defeats the purpose of the fight for equality. I'm not so blind I don't see the racism, but if more people judged others on their personality and diversity of thought rather than diversity of sexuality, skin color and gender we'd make a lot more progress on these type of social issues.
You make some good points! On the subject of subscriptions, I don't think being subscribed to only white creators makes you a white nationalist. I was more suggesting it may be indicative of an unconscious bias towards people of colour. Regarding schools, you can take a look at this document: www2.ed.gov/rschstat/eval/highered/racial-diversity/state-racial-diversity-workforce.pdf. As of 2012, 80% of American teachers are white. Even with affirmative action, I find it difficult to believe an imbalance in the opposite direction could happen in just six years.
So I just watched the video. I think that’s this is a really important topic. And as there was just recently the shooting at the synagogue and I wrote a paper about I’m very aware of his at the moment. Racism is a very complex topic. I haven’t really seen any racism personally or experience any homophobia even then I’m out of the closet. It’s horrible that people think that they are better because of there skin color. A lot of it is like you said because it is ingrained in us even if it’s not how we feel. But there is some people that feel they are better because of skin color. I honestly feel like I’m ranting at this point but I think we need to be more open and do more about the people that actually feel like they are better. Or the people that commit hate crimes because of how a person identifies or who they love. I feel like I kinda ranted...
I also find it hard to find words to voice how I feel so that could very well seem very disconnected and make absolutely no sense. Or convey a different point than I’m trying to convey
"Our standard is NOT neutral" Ahhh, you broke it down so well, and easy for anyone to digest. Thank you for this video, your take on the issue was a relief to hear. As a Black Booktuber™ myself, I appreciate you taking the time out to make this video and speak on this issue. Based on this vid alone, you have a new subscriber [me :> ] I hope that TH-cam, it's viewers, and the BookTube community as a whole can learn and grow from this situation and continue to do better, and I hope to add something to that as well.
I felt that eeek in my soul. I love this and feel like you approached it amazingly. and "You might be a racist." I need a sound grab of it to use it as a reaction!
9:04 I dont agree with this part that if you have more people who are white in your subscription box that it makes you racist just be youre like, "they're white ima sub" I mean usually it depends on the content the viewer wants to watch, I mean I have tons of POC in my sub box and they're all there cuz I like their content not bc I see their skin color and be like yup i gotta sub to balance a scale, honestly when I look at someone I dont see them as black or white, I just see them as a person
I am subscribed to your channel because I am an equal opportunity viewer, not because you are white, black, etc. Now that that is out of the way, good video. You are actually the first speaker I happened to clicked on on this issue and I think you handled it smoothly. However, I have to say, knowing that this is even an issue on BOOKTUBE, of all places, has me second guessing joining this community. I just want to talk about books, not deal with racism. I read books to escape that. I watch booktube because I like seeing what books are coming out. I am kind of put off by all the Y.A. books that feature on booktube, but I don't actively hate it! I just want more options. I want to find books in all genre's that will kindle my interest. But seeing how even that is tying into the whole, diversity outcry, both scares and angers me. I just want to talk about books! I don't think I'll actually join booktube anymore.
Thank you! I would say still join BookTube! The drama is there, but you don't have to get involved. On the whole the community is uplifting and kind. :)
Wow, I ws a little blown away by this video, not in a negative way. But I learned alot in it about this problematic is treated in the USA. For example, I didn't even knew that this idea exist of 'not having a problem with racism 'cause there doesn't exist any laws against cultural minority groups'. That's so dumb. 'Cause racism has nothing to do with laws (or at least not in the first way) but of your own opinion. I absolutely agree with you. I don't knwo alot about this problematic in the USA (though it's sometimes reported in the news), but we also have to deal with it currently in Germany. For a few years now there is a relatively new party in Germany rising. Translated it would be 'The Alternative for Germany'. Since 2014, I think, when the sitiuation in Syria started to become so dangerous, that people needed to seek refuge in Europeen countries, the matter of racism became more and more present in the europeen society. The Alternative for Germany (in German short AfD) became more and more popular, and now, since the last vote, their even presented in our parlament (by the way, we have, like at least 6 paties, I think, presented in our parlament) with 12.3% (which made me a little desparate 'cause of the appearently so high level of either very stupid or very racist or both people in the german society). What is something really seious, 'cause they have ideas like:"let's shoot on all the illegal refuges that what to cross our borders... pfffffff... that was a long rant. I actually just wanted to explain, that the matter of racism isn't sadly not only a still present porblem in the USA but all around the world. Also, like, I don't know, if you know about the new brasilien presedent? Well, he made statements like dark skinned Brasiliens would be actually worthless... we'll what will happen there though the next month... i'm actually kind of scared about what is happening to the society all around the world. Like there never exist slavery or the holocaust... anyways, thank you for this video, it showd me again, how much I like your channel and your attitude... oh, and I'm not a darkskinned person, but I'm just deeply sad about how some people treat ohers while it's just so obvious that every person in this world has exactly the same worth. ... PS. my personal favorite racist phrase is: 'I'm no racist, *but*...
For me I don’t look at skin color. It really just falls on people’s attitudes and what insights their review can offer me. Bad audio/blurry quality in a video turns me off as a listener, which could prevent me from hearing a good opinion. Thats about it! Lol. “Judge not by the color of their skin but the content of their character.” -MLK. I believe this goes all ways.
Have you ever heard about the book "why I'm no longer talking to white people about race"? haven't read it by myself, but it really sounds interesting!
I think you exaggerate many things in this video. Don't attack me. :) In XXI century almost every person owns a device which is connected to internet. If we live in a country where people were originally white we cannot expect them to turn black somehow, so it won't be racist to anybody. People have centrol of their actions and when I scroll down yt videos I click videos with nice picture, resonable title and good quality and I don’t care if a person is white or black when I see all these things. I feel like you try to sound as a psychologist when you give us no realistic point or scientistic articles to support your point. Apparently, I usually watch polish booktube and there are no many black people in Poland so channels done by black people are very rare. So am I racist because I don’t watch any or they are racist because they don’t want to do videos in my language? The only point you gave is that we are sort of programmed to prefer white speakers. But in these days we have black speakers in films, as doctors, in NHS, etc. I think it's not deep inside us, but is very easy to be overwhelmed.
really love your perspective! i think you did a great job of contributing to this conversation. i totally agree with everything you've said!
Thanks, Emma!
we love a controversial queen!!
You are my sassy sarcastic queen
I loved this so much, thank you! You made so many amazing points, that I hope will make people take a step back and think.
Thank you! I love your channel!

Thank you for making this video! I’m so glad people are more actively speaking out about issues like this. And, of course, totally agree.
Thanks!
This is such an intelligent, well done video. That unconscious bias is an important part of recognizing your own racism,, well spoken dear
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing this video! I feel like this puts a great perspective on the issues we STILL do face today ❤️
Thank you!

I’m here trying not to scream because I’m not home and forgot earbuds!!

Somehow I missed this comment! Thank you for saying that, that's super encouraging! :)
I’m late to the drama as I only recently discovered booktube but I really enjoyed your perspective on this situation
Thank you!

Thank you, bebe!
This video is extremely interesting and you make some very good points. It’s straightforward and straight to the point, but in such a good way.
Thanks!
This was really thoughtful of you and you explained everything calmly and thoroughly. Thank you for saying this!
Oh and I’m a pasty white girl :)
Thanks!

Definitely! I just meant that if every single person someone subscribes to is white, they might be subscribing based on unconscious bias.

I was speaking primarily about the North American context. :)
