What a great video for ex-sydneysiders suffering from nostalgia. I am now 84 and living in Melbourne. But when I was 12 I would catch the train every weekend from Meadowbank to visit my Grandfather who lived in Macquarie Stree. Because I suffered damaged heart valves from catching rheumatic fever I could not play any form of sport, So I spent my weekends exploring Sydney by train by using my school rail pass. Strathfield was the main station when I went to school at St, Pat's and your Vid reminded me that thei was a licenced "Wine Bar" on each platform.You cuold not buy a beer, and possibly not spirits, but you could stay there drinking all day long if "The train was late" LoL. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. While I travellled to visit my Father's family, who lived right on the edge of the cliff overlooking Coledale Beach, a few stops before Bulli, when my Grandfather retired to Patonga Beach I used to go to the Hakesbury River by a compination of Electric and Steam trains, the only acces to Patonga was by ferry. It stil operates and travel accross Pittwater to Palm Beach. Thank you for a couple of very enjoyable hours I spent reliving my youth. Phil.
OMGOSH!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. I was born and spent much of my growing up years living in the Greater Wollongong area, including in Thirroul. I took this train so many times but it NEVER got old. My favorite part of it was when the train rounds a bend and you get a brief look at the spectacular view of Wollongong and the coastal plain towns below before disappearing. I would be on the lookout for this vista every train trip. It’s been many decades since I moved to the USA, but Australia will always be home for me. I still have relied all over including in Wollongong so I visit whenever I’m back home (grew up between Wollongong, Sydney and Newcastle with jaunts to WA, QLD and VIC). I’ve often spoken about this amazing route and how if anyone was planning a trip to Oz that they should SO take a day trip to the Gong by train. I didn’t have a resource to show them the gorgeous countryside and coast. Until now!! THANK YOU 🙏!!
NZer here! @44:30 - Sutherland, where my brother lived for a couple of years - *beautiful* place! At least that's how I remember it when I was there in 2002. I found that Sydney doesn't feel at all like the huge city it is if you're just pottering around Darling Harbour. It feels very "right" - like a comfy pair of running shoes! It just "fits" - that's the best way I can describe it. *Great* city! I loved the small bit of the National Park that I saw on the southern edge of the city. Got in a couple of runs out there - beautiful place.
Yes, I guess sydney is like a big small town with the backdrop of a city. People actually notice each other's presence on the sidewalk, unlike in London, where they'd walk through you if they could. But get into a car today, and sydney now feels as big as it really is.
good on ya transport nsw, this is great, ive watched some overseas ones and have been hanging out for some aussie ones. more please.... being from s.a. i ran 2 monitors, one with the video and the other with google maps with the line highlighted, i manually GPS'd it on the map following the video, made it much more interesting to see where the line was in relation to the surrounding countryside.
Passing through Waterfall and the memories of that dreadful day 19 years ago returned. Condolences to the families who still suffer the loss of their loved ones.

As a frequent traveller of this train journey over the years. Never noticed that just before Scarborough is a one-way section of track and tunnel. I often wondered why we got stopped next to the coal loaders for ages on occasion. Waiting for the one-way track to free up. Now I know

I was a visitor in Wollongong around 1988 and took this line very often but I have no memory of so many high rises there. It was a very modest community of ranch-style homes and great folks....I'd love to go back to Wollongong and 1988 at the same time!
You are all very fortunate to have such a nice public transit train system! We voted for it here in California but politics and rising cost will most likely cause it to never happen here! You don't know how fortunate you are to have the option!
I totally enjoyed watching this seeing as I am Wollongong born and bred. Couldn't watch it in one go though, but I made sure that I took my breaks when the train was parked at a station. Didn't want to leave it parked in between stations just in case someone needed to get off or on, lol. Going to watch the Central to Newcastle next time.
Mmm . . . interesting to see the trip from the front, instead of the usual side-view. BUT, a slightly-related question: Why is the line to Waterfall & Cronulla called the "Illawarra Line"? The Illawarra region starts at the municipal boundary (between Wollongong & Sutherland LGAs) which is a few kms SOUTH of Waterfall station!! So, the so-called 'Illawarra Line' doesn't go into the Illawarra. Perverse.😄

Others have asked and I agree, please label the stations not stopped at. Someone also commented on all the work at Waterfall. What is it? What was happening at the station before Fairy Meadow? Platform extension or something else? Were we on a Tangara? All very lovely, thanks heaps.
I love Sydney. The double decker train public transport is excellent and fares cheaper compared to NZ. They really need to improve transport between the station and bondi beach. Set up a light rail system, extend the current line, or purchase a fleet of double decker buses. You guys have driverless trains that run every 2 minutes right? Could divert the line to include the beach? New Zealand builds double decker buses, 100% electric and diesel ones for Wellington. They carry twice the capacity of single decker buses. With over 5 million people, and the hundreds of NZ and oversees visitors, public interest, and better budgeting skills, they could achieve this.

I visit the Sutherland Shire frequently to see my partner, and I've long thought about the merits & downsides of replacing the Sutherland-Cronulla branch with a tram shuttle with more stops, but considering the absolute state of public transport in the area and how long it's stayed that way I don't imagine there'd be much public support.
What an amazing experience. I was a regular commuter to and from Bondi Junction for many years. I have never appreciated the size and extent of the crossover at Bondi Junction - until now. Thank you Transport For NSW! Great videos.

When train came to Sutherland we could see a man on the right side coming up and stood and then the way he was standing was like he is a dummy without any movement whereas you can see traffic on the adjacent road.
The first time I took this line, I couldn't believe how winding it became after Waterfall. "Oh look, there's another line down there." Turned out to be the line we were on.

That section of line between Otford/Coalcliff through to Thirroul is still one of the most beautiful railway lines in Australia, just spectacular

Not good if 1 train breaks down or there's a fault on the network. The whole network is greatly affected if those happen.

it's an intercity commute line, however a lot of the stations around the city circle or near there are usually enclosed like the london underground.
When we have skied in Japan, we catch the bullet train from Tokyo to Nagano. 224 km in 81 minutes!
